Las Vegas line for over under wins for 2014:

    USU - 9.5
    utah - 4.5
    byu - 9.5

I think for Utah State and BYU about right. For Utah I am guessing 5 wins. I don't see them making a bowl game again. But, they should show some play improvement.

Utah can probably get 6 wins IMO. They need to pull an upset for that to happen, though.

  • But seriously folks! Salt Lake City, UT
    July 30, 2014 4:51 p.m.

It would be foolish for the utes to assume they will beat WSU and Colorado this year as part of their 5-6 wins. WSU will prove to tough and Colorado should be a toss-up. I see 4 wins at best.

Las Vegas line for over under wins for 2014:

    USU - 9.5
    utah - 4.5
    byu - 9.5

    ----------

Nice post. Vegas is seldom wrong. I pick:

    USU - over
    utah - under
    BYU - over

USU should mow through the MWC and face challenging games in Tennessee, at BYU and at Boise St. Playing in Boise is not easy but even with that I think they'll make the game a close one so they should have no problem getting to 10 wins this year.

BYU has a doable schedule but there are some interesting angles that keep it from being a slam dunk. Texas on the road, UCF on the road, Boise St on the road are games that are concerning. If BYU can start fast (not usually the case under Bronco) then they should have no problem getting to 10 wins. They have tremendous depth and talent in a number of position groups on both sides of the ball.

Utah just doesn't have enough talent or depth. Their secondary last year was one of the worst in the nation. I see them losing 6-7 games in a row in conference and Kyle gone before the season is over.

7-5, Utah is bowling this year.

Not sure where you see 7 wins. You don't have enough Idaho States on your schedule to get to 7 wins. here's how it will break down:

    Idaho State Bengals (W)

Fresno State Bulldogs (W) (due to their breaking in a new QB)

at Michigan Wolverines (L) (road game. they're better than they were in 2008. 'nuff said)

Washington State Cougars (L) (this will be a battle but they have a senior QB)

at UCLA Bruins (L) (road game, 'nuff said)

at Oregon State Beavers (L) (see UCLA comments. also they have a senior QB)

USC Trojans (L) (Utah has yet to solve USC)

at Arizona State Sun Devils (L) (road game and see USC comments)

    Oregon Ducks (L) (fuhgedaboudit)

at Stanford Cardinal (L) (this will be Kyle's last game)

Arizona Wildcats (W) (interim HC leads team to win)

at Colorado Buffaloes (L) (utah has been underwhelming vs Colorado).

Good news, you'll be getting a new Head Coach. maybe he can turn the utes around and do what Kyle couldn't, make them a winner in the Pac12 someday.

    @BigCougar

    Idaho State - Win
    Fresno State - Win
    Michigan - Win
    Washington State - Win
UCLA - Loss (Another close game)
    Oregon State - Win
    USC - Toss-up
    Arizona State - Toss-up
Oregon - Loss (Closer than last year)
Stanford - Toss-up (Utah matches well with power run teams)
    Arizona - Win
    Colorado - Win

Utah is a good program and is competitive in the PAC 12. If you need proof, just re-watch last year's games (not just look at W-L record).
For those who want to come back with our conference record to date, see Washington and Stanford records during the 2000's. The Utes have yet to have a 1 or 2 win season as both Stanford and Washington have recently, with Washington going 0-12 in 2008.

  • WJCoug South Jordan, Utah

KYUte - last year means nothing. If you hope to improve over last year then you better have brought in better players than the ones that have graduated or moved on, and you hope that your competition is weaker than the previous year.

Utah loses on both counts - their recruiting is mediocre at best, particularly when compared to the competition and PAC12 competition appears to be getting stronger, not weaker.

Utah's inability to recruit is a killer. It is going to be a long year - again.

    @kyute

Your list is delusional. You have them down for 7 wins with 3 toss ups which would imply they have a shot at 10 wins. They do not have a shot at 10 wins, period. They only even have a shot at 7 wins if they can get to, and actually win, a bowl game.

If you really think it is going to go down the way you're predicting you are setting yourself up for an absolutely crushing let down. lol

    Duckhunter,

How much of a shot did we have at beating Stanford last year?

How much of a shot did we have at going undefeated and beating Alabama in a big time bowl game in 2008?

One thing is for sure - we have a much better shot at something special than byU this year, and every year. Thanks Pac 12 - we love you

  • KYUte Louisville, KY

The only delusions on this board are coming from Ute haters.
    My list is completely plausible.
Our receivers, running backs, O-Line and Quarterbacks are better and more experienced this year than last; along with more depth at each position.
The D-Line will be solid like always.
The linebackers are solid, although depth will be an issue to start the season.
The only big question marks are the DB's and injuries.
We went 5-7 last year, losing toss-up games to Oregon State, UCLA, AZ State and Washington State.
If we pulled out some or all of those close games, it would have been anywhere between 6-6 to 9-3.
When it comes to the Utes, you're just a "glass half empty" type of person.
An unbiased, rational sports fan will take what happened last year, injuries and all, and see that my predictions are completely plausible.

    ----------------

USU is a guarantee win, just like BYU.

Utah hasn't lost to a un-raked MWC team since September 2007 when we lost to 2-10 UNLV. Utah is 9-1 in PAC-12 vs non-conference teams, our only loss at #18 USU 2012.

I see the only close games you are counting are the ones utah lost while ignoring the ones they won and pretending that it was just a matter of winning some close ones. Typical utah "fan" delusion.

    ----------

Why would any team hope that the competition is weaker than the previous year. In fact, we made our competition more stronger than last year by dropping Utah State and BYU and adding Fresno State and Michigan.

Last year, I recall with a healthy QB we went 4-2, with an injured Wilson we went 1-5.
I also recall having key injures to our receiving corps.

The question is does Utah finally have PAC-12 depth to win at least 7-8 games while playing the toughest schedule in the nation? I think they have a shot at 7 wins this year.

Wins: Idaho State, Colorado, Washington State, Fresno State, BY...oops, sorry!
Possible wins: Michagon, Oregon State, Arizona
    Possible loses: USC, Arizona State
    Loses: Oregon, Stanford, UCLA

    7-5 is possible.

BYU will go 10-2 and Utah State 9-3.

ASU possible loss? ASU is better and at home and has dominated Utah, much like you boast that Utah dominates USU. I would move the ASU game to the "Loss" column. All time record ASU 19 wins Utah 6!

it seems to me a lowly team that can only muster a paltry 5 wins a season would like to schedule and play a "guaranteed win"?

But the u bought out the 2014 game and are not scheduling USU in the future... scared much? LOL

  • Riverton Cougar Riverton, UT

    @Uteology

Ifel Of'a-sofa brings up a good point; if USU and BYU are guaranteed wins, why does Chris Hill hesitate to schedule them? He is already on the record for saying that BYU being on the schedule made it too hard.

As far as USU goes, they are certainly not the guaranteed win you claim them to be. I bet if the U had played them in 2010 or 2011 they would have lost at least one of them. Also, the U was lucky to beat them in 2013.

    -------------

Dream on. Last year according to Sagarin Utah had the 5th toughest SOS with BYU and USU on teh schedule. Then Utah drops them, adds Fresno St and Michigan and their SOS falls to 11th toughest and you proclaim it to be.....stronger????

The only sure wins are Idaho St on your schedule this year.

    Guaranteed losses are:
USC, UCLA, ASU, Oregon, Stanford, Oregon St and Michigan
    7 losses right there.

    Possible losses:
    Washington St
    Fresno St
    Arizona
    Colorado (road game)
you'll likely split this group and go 2-2

    Guaranteed win:
    Idaho St

That puts you at 3-9 and I'll allow for one upset game in that group of possible losses to maybe hit 4 wins.

    @ Riverton Cougar

Because having 11 of 12 games every year already locked in is boring. Plus it's good to get outside the state for recruiting purposes.

"As far as USU goes, they are certainly not the guaranteed win you claim them to be."

Utah has won 13 of the past 14 and 21 of the last 24 games with the Aggies. USU isn't the hapless program they used to be, but that game has pretty much been a guaranteed win for Utah the past two decades or so.

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    Aug. 2, 2014 4:06 p.m.

    @2fer

Things have changed as far as usu is concerned and what utah did to them 24 years ago really doesn't mean much. Don't utah "fans" want to remain consistent in your claims just like you constantly claim what occured between BYU and utah 2 decades ago is no longer relevant to how they are today?

You're one of the more reasonable utah fans on here so I generally give what you write some credit and pay attention to it but you don't get to have it both ways. usu is clearly a vastly better team than they once were and if utah were to play them consistently I am sure usu would come out victorious at a much better rate than they did back then just like utah has fared much better against BYU than they were faring back then.

I've been a sports fan long enough to know that things change, nothing stays the same forever, I don't think utah has been all that good long enough for utah fans to understand this fact.

  • tinplater scottsdale, AZ

    @ 2 for flinching
ASU has won 26 Utah 6 of their contests. So what does that make ASU compared to the U? Most Sun Devils fans feel Utah is irrelevant too.

  • Two For Flinching Salt Lake City, UT
    Aug. 5, 2014 10:40 p.m.

    @ Duckhunter

My statement was meant to be taken in the past tense. The game "has" been a pretty much guaranteed win for Utah. But I agree that it certainly isn't the case anymore. They're playing some good ball up in Logan these days.

    @ tinplater

ASU has owned Utah for a long time. But the Sun Devils lost a lot this past year so hopefully Utah can put an end to the drought. I never said that anything was irrelevant, so I'm not sure where that came from. However, I can assure you that I don't lose sleep over what Sun Devil fans think about Utah.

  • tinplater scottsdale, AZ
    Aug. 6, 2014 9:14 a.m.

@two for flinching, just as I don't lose sleep about what Utah fans think about ASU or USU. It amazes me that U fans feel they need to belittle USU's football program, that is all. Some fans apparently feel that they are responsible for their team's success, conference affiliation...but of course don't take any responsibility when the team loses or does poorly. I have taken great pride in being an Aggie even though for decades the team was worse than mediocre. But at no time have I ridiculed or demeaned another program regardless of how poorly it was doing. I admire real success on all levels in sport.
