"The law already allows HHS and the Homeland Security Department to write
regulations to deal with "exceptional circumstances" that would allow
officials to return the children more quickly to their home countries, Feinstein
said Thursday at a hearing on a $3.7 billion emergency budget request from the
White House to deal with the growing crisis on the border."So we
already have a solution. Placing them with people here illegally
just compounds the problem and assures they will not show up for court.
These children are fleeing war and trafficking. This makes them refugees, not
illegal immigrants. Obama needs to state that clearly and ask the UN and other
countries to get involved in helping these refugees.
its funny that republicans are so up in arms when Obama is doing the one thing
they always complain he does not do, follow the laws passed by congress. He is
following the laws written by congress in 2002 and 2008 and singed by George W
Bush outlining how children crossing the border should be processed and treated.
If they want him to do something different perhaps they should change the laws
they enacted and Obama is following. I also agree with Kaliindra it is
time that we see this for what it is a humanitarian crisis with refugee children
at the epicenter, it is time to demand the UN and our own government wake up to
that reality and get to work.
Under the 2002 human trafficking law signed by former President George Bush and
reauthorized again in 2008 with additional protections, Mexican unaccompanied
children apprehended crossing the border are automatically returned without
formal deportation proceedings because the two countries share a border. But
unaccompanied children from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala cannot be sent
back without going through the deportation process, since that law ensured that
America wouldn’t send kids back to a dangerous situation. Authorities must
process these children and determine whether they have credible proof that they
cannot return to their countries of origin. Central American children are given
basic care like medical screenings in processing centers before being placed
with relatives or foster care until they can appear in front of immigration
Obama invited them here with his promises of amnesty, let HIM take care of them!
@KalindraBoth Biden and Kerry have said they were coming here for the
amnesty. See this papers archive for the June 20th article. @interventionBut the law states that they can rewrite the laws under
extreme circumstances. Please see the Washington post today for the
article on MS-13, taking advantage of the immigration crisis along the U.S.
border. “They’re now using the Nogales processing center as a
recruitment hub for new members to come in,” also all minors are being let
in, including known gang members.
After weeks of insistence that criminal violence was responsible for the surge
of Central American migrants, the U.S. has begun a regional public-relations
campaign to fight the widespread belief in Central America that children and
families will be allowed to stay in the U.S. if they are caught by the Border
Patrol. That belief has been fueled both by migrant smugglers seeking
more clients, and by calls home from children and families who have been
released by the thousands in recent years, with notices to appear in immigration
court, because there are no facilities to hold them.June 20 DN
@mountain man So Obama passed the 2002 human trafficking law by himself
in the house and the senate three years before he became a senator and forged
Bush's signature twice in 2002 and again in 2008?
@vstEvery time they write regulations Obama gets accused of rewriting or
ignoring the laws passed by congress. Maybe congress should stop making excuses
and either change the law or give them the tools to enforce it.
@prelax Tell me Tolstoy is wrong, maybe congress needs to stop trying to
displace their share of the blame and get back to work.
Obama had no problem using his executive powers giving waivers (amnesty) to
adults brought here as children. It caused this mess. It's not
Obama but Health and Human services, and Homeland security that has the power to
change the ruling. They don't need Congress, it's already part of the
@ kalindra and intervention:What verifiable source do you have for
your contentions that all of these children are refugees fleeing war and
violence from their home countries? What's to keep them from making such a
claim if it improves their odds of staying here?Border guards
interviewing these people said that most coming at this time are coming because
they heard now is a good time to come without being sent back. There has been no
recent increase in South American drug wars that have been at approximately the
same levels since the early 1980's.The biggest law debacle is
Obama's June 15, 2012 Executive Order to replace the Dream Act that
Congress wouldn't pass. It created the loophole that these illegals are now
relying on. Obama won't allow himself to be seen in the effected areas
because the entire mess has his fingerprints all over it. Like most
national problems, he keeps waiting and does very little, even when he has been
the primary source of the ongoing issues. He is simply not an administrator or
problem solver. His expertise is in making unfulfilled and unkept political
Obama has failed to stop the flow of unaccompanied children from illegally
entering our country. It is his policies and pandering for votes that has
emboldened parents in those central American countries to put their children in
harms way. Obama has to finally man up and deal with the problem he created.
Congress should not appropriate more money to grow the problem. We should treat
the illness or injury of these children then send them home.
This should be resisted and refused. All the illegal immigrants should be
repatriated. This administration needs to understand that we are not a dumping
ground for welfare cases. We need to shut down the borders, get rid of Obama and
all the members of the U.S. Senate who cooperate with this nonsense, and start
having a law enforcing administration and legislature.
Mr. Obama: Build Up That Wall!!!
America is thankful we have a President and administration confronting the
crisis and working to resolve it. Once again we look at Congress and wonder if
the GOP can at least give us one position they are united on and working to
Perhaps Obama will adopt a few of these children while donating one vacation
funding for their care. Come on Harry, and Nancy. It's time to
re-distribute.I really respect those who lead by example.
Maybe Guatemale, El Salvador, and Honduras should just ban home-schooling. Then
conservatives would be all for them coming here as refugee status to be
home-schooled (unless that just applies to German families).
The administration -doesn't- seem to be confronting this; they seem to be
fueling it. The Republican party, united or divided, can't and hasn't
been able to do anything because they get hammered and blamed for obstructionism
no matter what they do.Why is our government helping to keep these
families split up? Why is the Democrat party, which would normally jump at the
opportunity to show how much they "care" and how much they're
"helping" keeping such tight lips over what can be nothing short of an
orchestrated movement? Why are dangerous people being almost indescriminately
brought in with them?
