senate moves it forward and in the end this will accomplish nothing. This is
small ball and all the while we sit and watch that China will move past the US
as the worlds #1 economy this year. So let's see here under the Obama
regime we have suffered our FIRST credit downgrade and now China will pass us as
the worlds #1 ecomomy. This is hope and change. I think our kids and grandkids
are in for a very depressing America
@ PatriotYes, China soon will be the largest economy in the world. So
what?China will still be a developing country. However if you
compare GDP per capita you will see that there are many, many countries better
positioned than China. It only makes sense that overpopulated
countries as China and India should have bigger economies. Unfortuantely for
them it doesn't mean they have overcome poverty and all that come with
it.Compare China and Sweden. A giant economy and a small yet strong
well distributed economy. Who is envying who?
Obama is obsessed with minimum wages when he should be working to increase high
paying jobs. Bad leadership all the way around.
Absolutely. Where's the proposal to hike the MAXIMUM wage?
@ Mark B:The Koch Brothers, Wal-Mart heirs, and offshore bankers
already have the maximum wage well in hand.
The real problem is corporate welfare: businesses pay low wages and then
expect the government to pick up the slack in the form of food stamps and
government assistance so the corporate investors can make more money and put it
in offshore accounts or invest in multinational corporations that hire workers
in developing countries. That is the way the real economy is now working
folks. For once, don't you think it is time to support your self-interest
rather than the interests of those who are fleecing you? If businesses pay a
living wage, there would be little need for government assistance. It is time
to realize who is actually on welfare.
Raise it to 500$ an hour, that should ensure this won't have to be visited
every year by our stupid lawmakers.
@Kings Court--government can pick up the slack by relieving regulations.China having the largest econmomy, and not on the dollar currency will
I now live in a country where the minimum wage for adults is $16.50.The
country has -Been recession free for nearly 23 years straight-One of
the highest standards of living in the world-One of lowest debt to GDP
ratios in the world-Had an average national unemployment rate of 5.5-6%
for the past 13 years-Has one of the lowest poverty and crime rates in the
worldYes things are a little more pricey but at least I know that
the person serving me at the store can take care of their family better or the
student at the restaurant serving me my meal doesnt have to worry AS MUCH with
affording to go back to school. Happy to be here
Minimum wage is a laughable proposition when it has no meaning. We already have
a minimum wage and most people are underpaid intentionally or by government
allocation to busienss. Governemnt is footing the bill on wages and welfare
subsidies. So what business does or pays is irrelevant and minimum wages are
being denied by the state of Utah Governor and legislators.Since
Utah is a service oriented economy most busienss in Utah don't even offer a
wage to part time workers who have to beg for wages or cheat from customers who
patronize Utah business.Minimum wage that is not enforceable is
useless documents. It is already in the biding laws of contractors in this
country that contractors must use higher union labor wages in bids. The kick is
in all this lie is the contractors don't ahve to pay union wages or minimum
wages to its workers and therefore the overage of labor is a cash benefit to the
contractors. Charge the governemnt $50/man hour union wages on jobs then pay
workers $15/hr and pocket the other $35 they collect in government contracts.
I wonder what free markets look like..... There hasn't been much freedom in
our economy in my lifetime.
I find many of the responses to this article laughable. They mention Obama. They
mention China. They mention Obama's obsession with the minimum wage. The
only thing I can think is that the Deseret News intentionally headlined this
article the way they did to see if people actually read the articles before
responding. The first four words of the story says it all "Boston - The
state senate." People this is an article about the Massachusetts state
legislature and what actions they are taking on their state's minimum wage.
It has nothing to do with Obama, China or the United States congress. It is
So why does the DN have a picture of BO when talking about something done in
Massachusetts? Why does the DN run a headline that talks about the
senate with a picture of BO, leading us to believe it is the US senate, and not
the Massachusetts senate? They SAY they encourage a civil dialogue,
then they run a headline with the photo like this that appears deceptive and
inflames the posters.c'mon DN, you are better than this.
Mark bobama 's idea of maximum wage is the minimum wages excluding
him and his pals. the c.o. is a pathetic "leader".
How many times has the minimum wage been increased over the past four
decades?Has poverty increased, or decreased in the past forty
years?Come on people! Let's put on your thinking caps.
