Good for the Sherpa's. For far too long rich doctors have been hauled up
and down Everest with the aid of ladders and fixed ropes and Sherpas. I would
love to see Everest return to being an enviornment only for those who deserve to
climb it - not the rich who pay for someone to carry them to the top and back. I
agree - the pay for Sherpas is a joke especially for what they do but Everest
needs to get out of the tourist business and get back to being the highest and
most difficult mountain in the world to climb.
@patriotEverest is not the most difficult mountain in the world to
climb. That honor belongs to K2 (fewest summits of any mountain that's
open to climbing) or Annapurna (highest fatality-to-summit ratio). And sherpas' pay is not "a joke" - they make about 5 times the
average pay in Nepal. That's the U.S. equivalent of $250,000 for 2 months
worth of work. Trust me, sherpas are not downtrodden people - they are very
well paid given the cost of living in Nepal and there is always a long line of
sherpa people who are eager to get a mountaineering job.
