Truman was the last president with no college degree. Not having the sheepskin
would be the least of the problems I'd have with Walker.
Gee, the qualifications to be president are outlined in Article II Section 1 of
the Constitution of the United States says, "No Person except a natural born
Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this
Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any
person be eligible to tghat office who shall not have attained to the Age of
thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United
States."I don't seen any requirement to have any type of
degree. The only people that would see the need for that would be the Ivy
League elites. If Walker not having a degree is a disqualifier in some peoples
eyes, then I'm voting for him.
No, in fact, I'd say that not having a college degree, (especially a law
degree) would be one of the best qualifications for President today. Far too
many who have spent years on a college campus lack a real world view. And,
remember, some of the most practical, realistic and accomplished people of our
day dropped out of college. If achievement in college is necessary to be
President, then there was no one more qualified than Mitt Romney. He got both a
Harvard MBA, and Law degree on a single scholarship program. His Harvard
achievement makes Obama look like a junior college experience. Still waiting to
see those grades Barry. Talk about affirmative action.
Being intelligent or educated is not required to run for and to be elected for
public office as Walker and others have demonstrated. However, its much less
likely that such a person would win a national election. Still, I find it
highly unlikely we will ever see a democrat without a college degree run for
President. For whatever reason it seems only Republicans take such political
and social risk.
A degree certainly hasn't helped our current president.
On the one hand, a degree is certainly nice.On the other, Scott
Walker has done amazing things and been incredibly successful for the state of
Wisconsin-despite all attempts to defame him or hedge up his way.
@ Steven S Jarvis "Still, I find it highly unlikely we will ever see a
democrat without a college degree run for President. For whatever reason it
seems only Republicans take such political and social risk."It's interesting to me that democrats will mentally make having a college
degree a requirement. Yet, your major voting base is minorities, of which a high
percentage lack higher education and the ability to successfully get there. Much
less minorities struggle to graduate from high school. One could
argue that the democrats use class warfare to remain in power and keep the
uneducated in their pocket, while showing the other face that they really care
for this demographic.I can think of one democrat after another,
whose advance degree did them little good at being successful in politics. I can
think of several democrats that dropped out of school and still managed to steal
money from others. As I can with Republicans.IfDemocrats were truly
as smart as they claim, why did they claim that George Bush (who they regard as
being stupid) was able to trick them into war? Why haven't they fixed the
economy? After all their opposition is stupid right?
I guess nobody has looked at recent history. Best be going to Harvard or Yale
or be a former celeb (Reagan)...
@SC Fan“His Harvard achievement makes Obama look like a junior
college experience.”Hopefully you do realize that President
Obama attended Harvard Law School himself, and was the first African American
elected to be the president of the Harvard Law Review, which is considered to be
the highest position for a student to attain at one of the most prestigious
universities in the country. You’re probably one of those
Obama conspiracy theorists, but let’s stick to the facts, rather than the
‘gospels’ of the Limbaugh’s and the O’Reilly’s,
Some our worst presidents, like BO and Carter, had college degrees. being
educated obviously does NOT mean being competent.Larry Miller had no
college degree, and he was very successful at his chosen field.Bill
Gates did not finish college before he started microsoft - he may have finished
since, but I'm not sure.plenty of incompetent degree holders
out there and plenty of very successful non-degree holders.
The right does despises...a good education, it tends to shrink their fan base,
and those who fall for their spin on the radio.
scott walker is a union buster and practices class warfare on the middle class
and teachers. he would send wages back to 1950s years and no one would own a
house but the very rich.
Based on Scott Walker's logic, as well as a few from these comment boards,
our own illustrious governor would be a perfect candidate for president, based
on the fact that he too is not college educated. Just don't mention that to
Gov. Herbert, since he would call such a discussion 'elitist', as he
did during his re-election campaign. It is disheartening that more
and more elected officials do not practice what they preach with regards to
education. Benjamin Franklin was exactly right when he said, ‘genius
without education is like silver in the mine.’ Respectable colleges and
universities around the US largely do not tell students what to think, but
rather teach people how to think. With so many broadening social, economic and
environmental issues facing the world today, I would personally prefer an
elected erudite who makes sound decisions, over a loud and obnoxious blowhard
who appeals to the masses.
ArgoFYThank you for making my point about affirmative action. Obama
would never have been law review president if not for his race. And he would
not be President of the U.S. either. Don't believe me? Let me prove it.
If the junior Senator from Illinois with two years experience had been named
Barry O'Brien and was a white guy, do you honestly want to argue that he
would have been elected President. He would have been laughed out of the Senate
for even mentioning he wanted to run after only two years in office. And, the
American people would never have elected such an inexperienced person to begin
with. Obama, because of his race, was a popular choice because he brought the
uniqueness of being the first....... That's all he had. And I've
always wondered why, if he was such a brilliant legal mind, president of law
review and such, why did he not do what most of the best do. Clerk on the
Supreme Court? Or even a Federal Court? No offers? Hummmmmmmmmm. Still
waiting to see those grades Barry.
So long as he has Community Organizing Experience who cares what degree he has,
SCfan:I don't question the President's accomplishments at
Harvard. I do while at President but as said by someone else, if you don't
bring your facts to the table, you make fellow conservatives looks stupid...
SCfan let me guess your one of the white middle class men who conservatives
believe are disadvantaged? It is sad that you believe the way you do.
There's another article in this paper today celebrating 50 years since the
civil rights movement, you should reflect.
A degree isn't necessary to be a Republican President. GW has a degree
from Yale, but he was admitted only because of affirmative action. He was a
"legacy" student, who got into Yale because his faher is a
distinguished alumnus. And GW hardly distinguished himself in college. It's entirely possible he couldn't have gotten through college
if not for his legacy connection.Part of GW's political
attraction was his not-that-smart demeanor that connected so well with the
Republican base. It was clever of Republican strategists to strike a contrast
between GW with his faith in God and Reaganomics . . . And the very bright Al
Gore and Kerry with their faith in logic and workable solutions. You
don't need a college degree to be the de facto leader of the Republican
Party either. The Great Rush Limbaugh doesn't have a college
degree and might not be able to even spell C o l l e g e. But it doesn't
matter.A disdain of snooty "elites" is a big part of his
rhetoric. Uneducated leaders with strong opinions are attractive to Modern
"Conservatives." Who needs college?
