So according tot he BSA their ranks have been declining for the past decade and
has been about four percent several time throughout the past decade including
the year prior to accepting gay people to join scouting. so then it stand to
reason at most two percent of the decline was possibly due to gay people being
allowed into scouting. Hardly the bruising end predicted by many on these
threads a year ago.
It is a real shame that the Boy Scouts caved in on this issue and didn't
stand up for the Organizations long held beliefs. Many parents and young men are
looking for role models and for leaders who "stand for something" even
if it is not popular. When the Boy Scouts announced this change I know it was a
great let down for me personally and my view of the Organization changed. As a
long time Scout and Scout Leader, I will no longer support the Boy Scouts since
they are now just another organization that is more concerned about being
politically correct than about standing for Christian Values.
Upson Downs, My hubby works for scouting, and ya, things were hot for a while.
I wonder how you would feel if a son of yours, already in scouting, comes to you
and wonders about his sexuality. I haven't been through that, but I have
friends that did, and its not easy, and scouting would still be good for that
boy. Not just the shun treatment.
Upson Downs, So it's Christian to be intolerant? Pretty sure Jesus would
disagree. True role models are people who can accept difference as part of the
beauty of this life on earth.
@upson downsI was just thinking how happy I was that the scouts
stood for something despite the heated rhetoric and threats of boycott by those
hat claim moral superiority. I am happy that the organization I grew up with has
finnally put its dark times over the last two decades behind it.
"Do my best to God and my country. To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight." "A Scout is BRAVE." Its
time to change the Boy Scout Oath and Law because the organization is no longer
living up to its own ideals established by its founders. Instead it cowardly
sacrificed tradition to appease its corporate donors and an increasingly
degenerate American public.
@ Upson Downs and None99:Please, have some understanding here. The article's assertion that the BSA allows "openly gay"
youth to participate in no way cedes any moral ground or condones homosexual
activity. We're talking mainly about kids from the ages of 11-14, and a
smaller # that stay active in scouting until they are 18. At those ages, none of
them should be sexually active, whether homo- or heterosexual. "Openly
gay" in this context simply means that they have recognized their biological
condition of same-sex attraction, and are BRAVE enough to talk about it with
caring family, church or scouting leaders, and peers who are willing to
understand their challenge and be support their personal development in ways
that do not conflict with their affiliated religious organization or belief
system. This policy change is a terrific step forward for the
BSA's character-building programs and values to be able to serve more
youth, not less.
Let's face it folks. The Boy Scouts of America were forced into
this policy. It's a shame.
