when are we going to get the federal government out of the business of running
primary education. abolish the Dept of Education and let local government work.
This is the most ridiculous thing I have seen from the Feds regarding primary
education. what a joke
* classroom discipline. Disparities in treatment of different races*
rich vs the poor* income gap* war on women* racism*
gay marriageIs America dividing, or uniting?
Did the DOJ even bother to investigate these disciplinary cases. They ARE
well-documented by the school, with oversight by the district administration and
voted on by the local school board. Were these expulsions deserved or
not?I'm going out on a limb here and posit that they found nothing
amiss in the administration of the district rules. They simply want a more
lenient set of rules for minorities.Such as mindset is wrong and will lead
to lesser standards for minority students. Why have rules at all if they
don't apply to all the students equally?
Affirmative action for discipline?
Even for a group looking to score some political points at any moment's
notice, this is a lose-lose for Obama. If it doesn't show the absolute
futility and patronizing reach of the federal government, I don't know what
does! The Dept. of Education should be abolished! The only people benefiting
from this are the salaried workers doing busy work in Washington. Come on
Liberals, at least admit how bizarre, futile, and absurd this is!
I think it is fair that we address the same behavior problems between races,
this is only fair. Some of these stats though do not consider the fact that
many of these minority students come from single parent homes or are in gangs.
How do we address this...by going lighter on punishment? Wow! So we want an
almost impossible situation for teachers and administration to be more
impossible without funding for afterschool programs. I'm glad I don't
teach in a Title 1 school anymore....
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal."- George
Orwell.Neither Obama nor Holder support Rev. Martin Luther
King's dream "...of the day when children will be judged on the content
of their character, not the color of their skin." In fact, this
is just the opposite, with bad, even criminal, behavior to be ignored or
forgiven (and thus rewarded, encouraged and incentivized) just because the
perpetrator is of a certain race.We use to call this sort of double
standard "racism" and deplore it and attempt to stamp it out and condemn
those who practiced it. Now, you are called a racist if you oppose racism. It
is truly an Orwellian world.
The very people who insisted upon zero tolerance policies are now having a fit
about them. Zero tolerance has always been a stupid idea. Suspending a five
year old for having a squirt gun is just plain stupid.
If the problem is that minority students are unfairly targeted, then the problem
isn't the zero-tolerance policies, it's the administrators that are
racist. Urging schools to have more relaxed discipline won't solve a racism
problem. Seems like the effort to change discipline policies is the wrong
approach. Shouldn't changes be more about treating all students the same?
Good idea. While you're at this reform, make schools stop expelling
students for drawing pictures of guns or using their hands as guns while playing
I agree with an earlier post. If the punishment is different for minorities
than whites, there is a problem. However if the problem is that more minorities
are committing offenses, what should we do? Blame the school? The stats are
there, however they were never given, only observations about the data. Sounds
like a Trojan Horse to me.
Instead of campaign trips, our commander could set an example by teaching a math
class to black students in downtown Washington DC.Show how fair
enforcement of rules applies, and can be done. Actions speak louder than words.
