"...he has stood strong for constitutional principles."And
where in the Constitution does it say that Congressmen can throw hissyfits and
threaten the global economy if they don't the votes to enact their agenda?
"Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah is one of the greatest senators that Utah has ever
had."Wow, quite a claim. I wonder if Bobbi can name four other
Senators from Utah."Because he is doing such great things and is
being constitutional, the government wants him stopped"Good
heavens! The government wants him stopped? Sounds like the plot of a Political
Intrigue novel. Do you realize, Bobbi, that all the Senators are
"being constitutional"? I'm very sure all of them were elected, per
the Constitution. I'm sure that all of them when they offer bills are doing
it through the constitutional procedures of the Congress. What is it, exactly,
that you think these people are doing that is not constitutional. You realize,
right, that even if they pass a bill that the Supreme Court finds
unconstitutional, they still have not done anything unconstitutional? The
constitution says nothing about the types of bills they have to offer or pass.
And you do realize that the Supreme Court is included in the
Constitution? They get to say what is constitutional and what isn't. You
realize that, right?
I needed a good belly laugh to start my day. This letter gave me just that. I
laughed my head off -- thanks, Bobbi, for the comedy letter you wrote. There is nothing "great" about Lee. In fact, the truth is just
the opposite. He is a disaster that, unfortunately, found a place to happen and
the country (and Utah) has suffered as a result. We deserve better.
Sorry, but he is going against the very Constitution you claim to support. The
Founding Fathers never would countenance what Lee and Cruz have been doing.
They set up a system of government to bring order, and your boy has brought in
disorder, chaos, anarchy, blackmail, extortion and other wrongful acts on
matters that were adopted by the Constitutional process and upheld by the
courts. Lee wants to overthrow what amounts to a difference of opinion on
policy matters. No, dear writer, an agreement with Lee on policy does not
entitle a small minority to effectively attempt a coup. Lee makes a mockery of
the Constitution. His words say one thing, and his heart and actions are far
Wow. So speeches and rhetoric are more important than results? Because the
results of Lee's intransigent grandstanding have been damage to both the
Republican brand and conservative policy goals, not to mention billions of
dollars in real-world economic damage. He talks a good talk, but, in
practice, he's actually te eat friend the Democrats ever had.
The best friend, not "te eat" friend. Typos are unconstitutional.
Yes, how dare Mike Lee or anyone else demand honesty and accountability from our
president? How dare he? Doing so is very destructive, right?Mike Lee
should be regarded as a hero for shinning just a little bit of light and truth
on the Obama Administration! Even if they don't like it! That's HIS
He is a tea party wolf as he has proven. Just in sheep clothing after causing

One thing I've noticed is tea partiers tend to see things in black &
white, good or bad, right or wrong. Grey areas tend to be confusing, and end up
being part of their big hairball of frustration, the great injustice of it all
they rail against.Perhaps the very first major instance of a US
President undermining the constitution was the Louisiana Purchase, by Thomas
Jefferson, in 1804. This large acquisition composes all or part of 15 current
states, but many people at the time opposed it because it was viewed as
unconstitutional. The question for tea partiers is what we should to
do to correct previous unconstitutional injustices? If we're going to
honor and defend the constitution, it seems to me that includes correcting past
breaches of constitutional authority: the Department of Energy, Medicare and the
Louisiana Purchase.Louisiana Purchase - do we sell it back to
France? Yes or no?
The lefties are in top form today."...threaten the global

of government except Obamacare. This includes the payment of our nation's
debts. There was only one side threatening default, and it wasn't Mike Lee.
It turns out he was right about Obamacare -- the thing is a train wreck. He did
the best he could to avoid it.If anyone deserves our contempt, it is
the man who lied to the American people to bring us Obamacare. "If you like

budget that funded everything at the House levels except Obamacare which they
set their funding levels for. The House never voted on it like the Senate voted
on the House versions. So... there were two sets of people threatening default.
1. Boehner and House leadership which changed the rules on bringing up Senate
bills for a vote (limiting it only to House leadership rather than anyone,
blocking Democrats in the House). 2. The 80 or so tea partiers that signed onto
a letter expressing support for shutting down the gov't if Obamacare
Mike Lee is an embarrassment. Period.
That is hilarious. Even his own party members are distancing themselves from
this one-and-done senator.
Every week a letter gets published that, in all honesty, has to be taken as
purely tongue-in-cheek. This is our winner.Unless, of course, Mike Lee
wrote this himself.
This letter reads like a Fox News random talking point generator. The
frightening thing is that people actually believe the hype. Folks,
These talking heads that give you these talking points are entertainers. nothing
more. Taking the seriously is like taking Thurston Howell III from
Gilligan's Island seriously. Their sole motivation is money. The more
outlandish they are the bigger their audience and the more money they take home.

I don't know if Lee is a "Great Senator" or not yet. This is his
first term. You kinda have to have a track record go be "Great" IMO.
That's why I was so surprised when Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize
BEFORE he even became President. BEFORE he had done anything besides serve one
term in the Senate.Let's wait and see on Mike Lee. IMO you
can't become a "Great" Senator in just ONE term (whether you are
Barack Obama or Mike Lee).Mike Lee is a good Constitutional
Scholar.. I give him that. He has many years of doing that and a track record
on that. But he's new to the Legislating. We'll have to see if he
is a good "Legislator" or not. Being a Constitutional Scholar
doesn't always make you a great Legislator. Just as being a fast talking
Senator doesn't always make you a Great President. There are different
skills required for each of these jobs that don't automatically translate
into making you "Great" at the other. What Legislation has
Mike Lee proposed and passed?THAT would make him a "Great
This letter would be one of the funniest in decades, except that I have a
sneaking suspicion that the letter writer is dead serious. In that case, this
letter is tragic, because, unfortunately, there are a lot of Utahns who agree
with her. And Mike in Sandy, don't be so sure Lee is a one-and-doner.
Don't put it past Utah voters to send this guy back to Washington for
another dreadful term.
Speaking of Mikey's tea party, I saw Sarah Palin on the Today Show this
morning. She was angry, irrational, shrill, and determined. She refused to
answer questions posed to her. She gave vague, evasive answers to other
questions. Reminded me of 2008. But this is what drives the tea party. It is
mostly misdirected anger and alarmism. Mike Lee is less shrill and irrational,
but he too is peddling alarmism and anger over symptoms rather than the real
disease. Don't be taken in by the rhetoric. It is dangerous, and it is not
going to simply go away because 70 percent of the country is tired of it. Our
best hope is that it will split the GOP in half, thus rendering both less
10CC,Great post. Thanks.
Mike Lee might be great, maybe he is not. However the greater the claims the
greater the scrutiny. Subject him to scrutiny, and when he survives, those
ideas will be stronger.
Here's how "Great" he is.Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said
Thursday that Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli would have won the
governor's race against Terry McAuliffe had two unnamed senators not thrust
the country into a government closure. They were unnamed because Hatch
didn't call the two senators out by name. But let's just say their
names start with Ted and Mike and end in Cruz and Lee."Look,
Cuccinelli would have won if a couple of senators hadn't shut down the
government," Hatch told Fox News on Thursday. So if by "great"
you mean Mike Lee is "worthless", then you are correct.
"Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah is one of the greatest senators that Utah has ever
had."--I like dreaming...
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Thursday that Virginia Attorney General Ken
Cuccinelli would have won the governor's race against Terry McAuliffe had
two unnamed senators not thrust the country into a government closure. But a
Democrat beat him out. They were unnamed because Hatch didn't call the
two senators out by name. But let's just say their names start with Ted and
Mike and end in Cruz and Lee."Look, Cuccinelli would have won if a
couple of senators hadn't shut down the government," Hatch told Fox
News on Thursday. So there's your great Senator. If by
"great" you mean "worthless" then you are correct.
"Unconstitutional" is in the eye of the beholder. Mike Lee sees any
federal effort at helping sick people as "unconstitutional." I read the
same document and see the phrase "provide for the general welfare." To
me, that means doing what we can as a nation to care for the sick, to prevent
epidemics, and to relieve suffering. Lee differs. In my opinion, he is using the
Constitution as a cover for selfishness.
I would trade half a Mike Lee for the two dimwit senators we are saddled with in
@ atl134Both groups you mention supported budgets which included
funding the government and servicing debt.Obama allowed the
government to shut down in order to retain funding for Obamacare. And Obamacare
is a disaster.
yrboaenmbepibadirvmminncvwcl;sa My head hit the keyboard when I passed out. I do
not know how long I was out, but my computer was in screensaver mode when I
recovered. How do you respond to this? Wow doesn't even come close. Is
obstruction to everything considered accomplishment? Is threatening a government
shutdown and financial default to stop a law passed by Congress, signed by the
President and ruled constitutional by the Supreme Court, a power of a few
Congressmen in our Constitution?
I agree with this letter writer. You may not agree with Lee's politics, but
it has been a long time since Utah has had a politician that has been willing to
stand by what he said during the campaign. The DN and Utah media in general have
done a good job demonizing Lee. Don't whine about an over burdening
government and then complain when someone tries to do something about it. Time will tell if Obama Care and the huge national deficit is good for
the country, or if those opposed to Obama Care and the deficit are right. The
2014 congressional elections should tell the tale. Lee will not be affected by
this elections but others in the Senate and House will be.
My favorite line was the one about how the 'government' is trying to
stop him. Despite, you know, Senators being part of 'government.' Oh,
wait, it's gotta be the NSA. Or maybe the Secret Service. They're
making him say silly things on TV! It's mind control!
Leaving Mike Lee out of it, and try to define what you mean when you say,
"Great Senator"... I don't think you would describe Mike Lee.I would describe a great Statesman (or someone who knows when to be
firm... and when to give a little and compromise when needed to give BOTH sides
what they need to "win"). Someone like Washington, or Lincoln, or
Jefferson.NEITHER side in this recent debacle showed the ability to
compromise or give the other side a "Win" (not just Republicans). I
don't know if I could find a SINGLE "Statesman" in Washington now
days (Democrat or Republican). He may BE a "Great Senator"
some day... but I personally don't think he is there yet.Standing on principle is not all there is to being a great legislator. You
also need to be able to find a way to get the things you are standing on DONE.
Sometimes that requires compromise and finding a way for both sides to feel they
won.Democrats could learn this lesson too.
IMO his position was right, but his tactics were wrong. He needed to find an
acceptable compromise. And get started before a few weeks before the budget has
to be passed or the government shutsdown.Complete and total repeal
was not an option. He needed to propose something Democrats could accept.Problem is... NOTHING gets done in Washington until it's a
"Crisis".We are already past the time when any real
negotiation and compromise could happen on the NEXT Budget Deadline.
We're already past the point where serious people could work out a serious
compromise solution to the problem... so it's obviously going to be
"Govern by Crisis Mgt" again when the next deadline arrives.Democrats already know the Republicans are going to be painted as the bad-guys
if they oppose ANYTHING They want. And if they hold out long enough... even if
the government gets shutdown AGAIN... they get no blame and the Republicans look
all the worse. What motivation is there for Democrats to do anything
until it's too late? Even if we MISS the deadline again and the
government shutsdown... Republicans get vilified... So why even try if
you're a Democrat?
I checked Mike Lee's voting record from another thread -- He
has 144 Nay votes, and only 56 Yea votes.[Assault Weapons for
lunatics [aka, no background checks] was his only note worthy Yea vote].
He has not voted FOR one judicial nominee since he's been in
Washington. Now -- How does that make him so great? For the record -- After his little stunt shutting down the Government
and permanently giving the GOP a black eye, don't count on 1st term
Senator Mike Lee being selected to head any powerful Senate committees, or be
privy to any politically sensitive matters ever again. He's
burned that bridge.
The hypocrisy of the posts indicate that the original letter must be correct
re:2bits"He needed to find an acceptable compromise. And get started
before a few weeks before the budget has to be passed"House
Republicans refused to go to a budget conference for 6 mons preceding the
shutdown. Their plan all along was to use the shutdown as the tactic to
repeal/defund Obamacare. It is apparent Lee/Cruz never learned:"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the
courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."
"The hypocrisy of the posts indicate that the original letter must be
correct"How idea one follow the other? If (for the sake of
argument) there is hypocrisy in the posts, how does that make the original
letter "correct"? How are the claims in the original letter validated by
any hypocrisy in the posts? And while we are at it, what hypocrisy?
On the TV the other night Lee said conservatives need to say what they are
"for" as much as they say what they are "against." OK, we know
the Lee opposes "Obamacare," but he has been completely silent about his
intentions for seniors. I wonder what he intends to do for us or to us.
Anybody else curious?
markPosters who think they are tolerant merely because they hate for all
the fashionable reasons (hypocrites) are all in a tizzy. If the latter angered
the fashionably intolerant - the writer is on to something.

The Lee supporters keep trying to rehabilitate the failed Senator. Will he
disavow the radical tea party?
Again, Lee has been completely silent on what he and his cohorts intend for
seniors. He is a fellow Utahn and churchman, but he scares me as much as any
middle east terrorist.

I'd insist Vega$ stays in the US.Or, we could could merge
Mexico, the US, & Canada. Why? It'd push Glenn Beck over the edge.
Is this a ruse?
I would have had nothing against Senator Lee, (although I didn't have much
information about him before, because I am an optimist). I always try and give
people the benefit of the doubt, as I hope they would me.... "Do unto
others" type theory. However, when I heard what happened with Senator Lee
and since I've gone without health coverage because of the health insurance
unfair practices, I had to pause and re-evaluate him. Either he doesn't
know about health insurance (I'm a former health insurance worker and know
many people don't) or he just doesn't care and just wants the approval
of his Party at all costs. Either way is unacceptable for a Senator of the USA!
Ideology is never a suitable substitute for introspection, due diligence, wisdom
and good judgment. To think otherwise is to promote ineptness. That is the
problem we face with Sen. Lee.
There is a place for leaders such as Mike Lee. He is willing to stand firm on
principles and be ridiculed for it. When it comes to comparing his reasoning to
that of Obama, I'd far prefer to agree with Mike Lee.
It becomes more and more difficult to sort what is satire and what is real. I
would adore a letter from the writer detailing the constitutional protections
offered by Mike Lee and his constitutional governance.
Yes that letter was funny, but also scary. People really believe the FOX News
hype that is so degrading it is sad. Mike Lee really did his party and Utah a
wrong, but he will get re-elected again because we just don't think for
ourselves in Utah. A moderate would do us well!
