Not sure how Davis ended up as the Underdog. But I like all the 5A picks. 4A, I
can see Box Elder upsetting Woods Cross. No real supprises in the Picks.
This Parry’s Power Guide is an interesting concept. I wish someone would
do that here in our state. However, I do have a couple of questions:1. If I'm reading this right, does just about every 3AA, 2A and 1A team
in the state of Utah make it to the playoffs (except Academies)? (I see at
least one team in the playoffs with a (1 - 9) record and a bunch of teams with
losing records in both Region and Overall.)2. For the above Utah
High School football classifications, does Utah simply invite everyone and award
"participation" trophies for teams in its state football playoffs?
It looks like this might be the year that South Summit gets over the San Juan
@M.T. NogginI see your confusion, let me try to explain if I can.
1) We do not have as many schools as you might see in Georgia, etc. 2) The
travel distance between some schools to play each other, even in some of the
regions established could be as much as 5 to 6 hours or more on a bus. When it
becomes playoff time, the time travel can be even further with home games and
region match-ups. 3) Some of our schools vary so much in size that it often
becomes unfair, thus the 3AA Region. In years past 3A was dominated by those
schools you see in the 3AA Classification this year. Thus the two 3A and 3AA
regions. 4) Because of the divided class of schools, the bracket gets oftly
small, so to make it at least a 3 game playoff bracket like you see in 1A, 2A,
3A, and 3AA, you have to allow teams in who just don't belong. Sounds lame
I know, but it is what we have to do with the number of schools, sizes of the
schools, strength of schools, and sizeable brackets. Hope that helped.
Only one 1A team didn't make the playoffs (Whitehorse). I think two 2A
teams didn't make it and two 3A and 3AA teams didn't make it. Ten 4A
teams stayed home while nine 5A teams didn't qualify. Yeah, it's
pretty lame and creates a lot of ugly mismatches. The Duchesne-Monument Valley
game will be ugly. Whoever Judge is playing will get toasted. Bingham will wax
West, most of the games will be over before the half and the mercy rule invoked.
M.T. noggin and UtahBruin:1A Football is so small (9 teams) that
literally only 1 team doesn't make it to the playoffs. In 2A, it is 2
teams out of 14 that sit out. I still cannot understand why the State Activities
folk allow political pressure to force them to do crazy things like make a 9
team 1A division, several of whom played and beat 2A and 3A teams, a small 14
team 2A, and then 2 3A divisions of 12 and then 14 teams. That's 49 teams
in 4 divisions. The 2 large classifications have 54 teams total. If
they had simply sent the 4 largest 3AA teams to 4A, since they literally have
only 10-50 less kids out of 1000+ than some 4A teams, and then split the lower
45 remaining into 3 groups of 15, it would all work out. We all travel anyway,
so that's a silly argument.
Rural Sports fan with the larger 3AA schools in which you are referring
too, which are they and what is there 9-12 th grade enrollment?
Gun Smoke...the state only counts 10-12, and the 4 schools that
"could" go 4A to be with Wasatch, which has 1194, as of OCT 2012, (I
didn't check every single one, just checked a few to see how big the gap
was) would be Uintah at 1106, Bear River at 1084, Park City at 1083, and Snow
Canyon at 1095, with Dixie at 1050, and Desert Hills had 1014.
Upset special PG over Davis, I will take Highland as well. Just a guess on my
part, I think both will be very good games?
