In his classic work on suicide, the psychiatrist Karl Menninger said that it
required the coincidence of the wish to kill, the wish to be killed and the wish
to die.In my observation the presence of guns or other weapons seems
to lead to the desire to kill.
We have tasked our military members the ultimate requirement, to put their life
on the line everyday for over ten years. There is no break for them. They are
pulled away from families, friends and associates to serve alongside others in
their same boat. They are put in countries that don't share the same
values and culture as we have in our country, even though our country is diverse
and full of people for generations from every country in the world. Family
separation is a significant portion of the military member's problems.
These men and women are given devices to forget they are in the countries to
support and defend our country in the remotest places for them. They are at work 24/7/365 for multiple tours even when they are back in the
USA preparing for another tour in one of those countries. With cutbacks in
funding for medical and psychological care and the deficit Veteran's
Administration process, these men and women are left to deal with their
problems, alone. Their families don't understand their stress and what
they were subjected to for months. This President makes light of the
military and Congress is not far behind.
