Proper planning and Research is one thing, The over spending of taxpayers money
is another. Having good a transit system is imortant, but not on the backs of
those who need the service the most. Or to pay the executives 10 to 15 times
more than the average uta rider.
When the businessman’s union, the Chamber of Commerce, get together to
represent their members in the quest for wealth and money, they tend to
represent all businessmen. Although I suspect that the representation is
effected strongly by the size and wealth of the business. Just like
workers unions, they try to improve the profit of all businesses by limiting
internal competition and applying influential control over the employer of
business otherwise known as the general population of taxpayers. So while they tout the need for public transportation they must also consider
the negative effect on others like the automobile industry, fuel and all the
associated entrepreneurs. In the end a compromise is done that gets the public
transportation build but limits it’s effective use. Small
retail business would probably favor effective public transportation but they
might not have the votes.
I love the spin to explain the numerous trips to Switzerland to ride a mountain
rail system. I've ridden the train to Leysin (which is a cog railway to a
ski resort from the Lake Geneva area) without having the taxpayers pay for my
trip. These UTA guys, with their $200 k salaries can afford to do the same. Hire
a consultant from SBB to advise us on mountain rail don't waste our moeny
sending managers with no technical engineering education to ride a train.
