Really, George Will? The worst thing about being governed by lawless bureaucrats
is that Americans will learn to distrust government?I think
it's healthy to distrust government. My worst fear is that Americans will
lose their liberty.
When I saw her testify, I saw a possibility that she hadn't done anything
wrong. That she was refusing to testify because she and her lawyer saw that
conservatives were after a pound of flesh, so she was afraid they might twist
her words in an attempt to use her as a scape goat. In a similar position, I
would do the same thing.
Let's all refuse to pay our taxes and then tell the IRS we are taking the
5th Amendment! If its good enough for Lois Lerner to hide behind it should be
good for us, right?
As usual, George Will is correct. He has pointed out an abuse of power. Now,
the question is, what are WE going to do about it? Are we all just going to
continue to pontificate or are we going to demand that those who represent us in
Congress protect our liberties?
Frankly, I'm not sure she did violate the law OR ethics. She was
responsible for ensuring that only "charitable or educational" groups
received tax exemptions, not political groups. That's what she was doing.
Out of 300 groups flagged, 78 were "conservative." That seems about
The things about conservative republicans illustrated by this article is that
democrats used the legal process, where as the republicans use hearsay to
discredit an enemy. As I understand it, there are no actual
charges filed against the Obama team. The scandals are simply made up bogeymen
to distract the voter from the real dangers of the conservative republicans.
While I sometimes think justice is thwarted by the Fifth Amendment,
I do think it is the perfect right of any American. Especially when under the
attack of a sniping, extremely prejudiced, political enemy. I would
recommend that every member of President Obama’s team respond to the
Congress interference with the Fifth Amendment. Maybe if the republicans see
that they are stopped in their mud slinging, they will actually get down to the
real business they are supposed to do.
Before deciding whether what she did was either legal or ethical, how about
listing all of the liberal groups where were sent those exact same
questionaires? How about listing all of the liberal groups that were denied the
desired status? How about explaining how Barack Obama's brother
organization was cleared within thirty-days and then had its tax-exempt status
made retro-active for two years? If we believe in equality, then
ALL political organizations must be treated exactly the same. It didn't
happen. The I.R.S. targeted conservative groups. Liberal group received no
Tea Party. Would it be possible for you to describe the liberty
that you fear losing? Please don’t include that liberty secured
to you by the American government that you distrust.
The admission by Lois Lerner was, as she publicly said, conservative groups were
specifically targeted by the IRS. The question she will not answer is who
authorized it. And how high does it go. The violations were the
release of data collected by the IRS. Remember Harry Reid saying he knew the
details of Romney's personal tax returns. To know that before they were
released by Romney, by anyone from preparer to IRS, would be a felony. If
Harry Reid received this information, and has not submitted the party to
authorities, he is protecting a felon.
To "Irony Guy" and "Ultra Bob" but the data that the IRS
gathered was used illegally. According to ProPublica, they received information
from the IRS about conservative groups. It is illegal for the IRS to be giving
out information like that. They were given copies of applications of at least 9
conservative groups that had not been approved. See "Progressive Group: IRS
Gave Us Conservative Groups' Confidential Docs" at Breitbart where they
even included links to redacted copies of some of the illegally distributed
documents. To "Ultra Bob" but the Obama administration has
been named in a lawsuit. See CNN's article "Conservative group takes
IRS, top Obama officials to court"
@Ultra Bob "Would it be possible for you to describe the liberty that you
fear losing?"Certainly. I'm concerned about the effect it
has upon the rule of law when people with differing political opinions are
targeted for harassment by those in power. Unequal protection destroys the rule
of law, which is an essential element of our liberty."Please
don’t include that liberty secured to you by the American government that
you distrust."Why not? George Washington said, "Government
is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous
servant and a fearful master." If he could believe this, and still serve as
president, why should I not believe it as a private citizen?
Great job George, as usual.Your description of Lerner's
"slithering partisanship" is so perfectly descriptive it should be
trademarked. I wish it described only her. But, as you also aptly noted, she
is but one of thousands of partisan hacks who have thoroughly corrupted almost
all levels and areas of the Federal government.Worst of all is the
fact that it takes an informed and honest electorate to clean out the snake pit
that describes so much of Washington. And, I am increasingly doubtful there are
enough of those kinds of voters to do the job.
The IRS is the new collection agency for the welfare state! Under Obama, it has
a new role as well, the primary punishment agency for anyone who disagrees with
Obama's socialist agenda. Step out of line of Obama's agenda and the
IRS will be in touch with you!
Nate. “I'm concerned about the effect it has upon the
rule of law when people with differing political opinions are targeted for
harassment by those in power. Unequal protection destroys the rule of law, which
is an essential element of our liberty.”Right on! We’ve been
working to get that form of liberty from the very beginning. But, we
obviously have a long way to go, as illustrated by the OWS, the plight of
President Obama, the attempt by churches to extend freedom of religion to
business, voting restrictions and shenanigans against people and the improper
influence of business on our government.I tend to doubt quotes that
come from long dead people who cannot confirm their accuracy. However, I agree
with the quote. To me our government is like a rope in our grasp as
we dangle over an abyss, it may be frayed and worn, but if we discard it…
Ultra Bob, I don't know how old you are, but a Republican could have said
the very same things you are saying back in the days of Nixon and Watergate.
Think about it.
