I hope BYU wins a lot this year, but win or lose it should be a fun schedule. Go
ESPN2? I was hoping for some big-name, well-established, everybody-watches
channel like Fox Sports 1.
I can put aside my bias for a minute and admit, this should be a good game,
I'm actually looking forward to it.ESPN, ESPN2 I dont get why
people make a big deal out of he difference, makes none to me.
@Ed,What you should be hoping for is a win against TexasOR against BoiseOR against Notre DameOR against
WisconsinYou've proven you're incapable of beating
Utah(2013 Seniors about to be swept 0-4 how embarrassing)Between
Texas, ND, Boise, and Wisconsin, I think you may pull out a single win.Add Utah and it will be a 1-4 record against the best 5 programs you play!.200 record against good teams right on par for Bronco!LOL
Chris B,Being in the PAC 12 and winning in the PAC 12 are two
different things. The article mentions that Texas is one of the 7 teams on
BYU's schedule that went to a bowl game last year. By the way, speaking of
Big 12 teams, BYU only loss to Texas and Oklahoma the the one-point loss to Teas
last year at Texas.
That is one tough schedule. If I was a BYU fan; I'd be very happy with 8
wins. I applaud BYU for putting together such a tough, well rounded schedule.
Great opener too!
@Chris BGive it a rest. The article is about BYU, their opener and
their schedule. It has nothing to do with Utah. It's a tough schedule; give
a little credit where due for a change. Please don't let
B's drivel be a reflection on all Utah fans........sheesh!
@ Chris B"What you should be hoping for is a win against
Texas"With a 5-7 record last year, you have enough to worry
about than worrying about BYU beating Texas or anyone else on our schedule.
Spokane UteSpokane, WAThanks, neighbor! And here's one
cougar hoping that after an early, inexplicable loss to that team down south,
Utah runs the table and starts 2014 in the granddaddy of them all.
Re: Chris BI rather think that the other PAC12 schools' fans
are irritated by the fact that you mention, ad nuaseum, the Utes are part of
their conference. At this point the Utes have done nothing to add to
the prestige of the conference. Your continually riding the conference's
coattails is pathetic.FYI: The BCS is dying and your use of a dead
and broken system is overworked. The fact is that at present, the
Utes are part of the PAC12 as a place holder. Your Utes brought very little to
the PAC and while they have been in the PAC, they have done nothing in the two
major sports of football and basketball; or for that matter most other sports as
well.As I suggested to you before, you can be a better help to your
Utes by posting supporting comments on articles about them and lay off the
amusing and misguided comments you make on BYU articles.
Chris B,Are you one of those fans that has a conference logo that is as
big as your school's logo on your hat\t-shirt?How has that been going
for you as a fan, this big conference of yours? Not so much to cheer
about?Just beating your big brother down the road all that you hope
Great schedule...now let's win a few of these games, especially the close
ones.btw D-News editor, can you cut out posters who say the same
thing in 3 different posts or say the same thing on every post on every article?
Worse than being off-topic is saying the same thing over and over regardless of
the article. Not naming names...

missing from this reference is SOS. Imagine what the numbers would be, were the
respective schedules swapped. LOLbyu caught a down UT the last time
around and can look forward to receiving an absolute blood-bath administered
upon them by The Longhorns in 2013. In 2011, UT struggled at home to put away a
patsy-byu which UTAH absolutely brutally curb-stomped on their homefield the
following week, 54-10.Hook 'em Horns!
ESPN is better any day than the Fox Sports 10.2 Network, or whatever it's
called. Chris B, dont be jealous.
For those of you byu fans pointing to UTAH's PAC-12 record following merely
2 years as a member of this BCS conference, as if byu would've done as
well/any better, consider this--byu has played against 5 PAC-12
teams to date. They are 2-3, beating 2 teams which finished at the bottom of
the conference and getting absolutely brutally curb-stomped at home by the only
2 teams which finished the season with a winning-record. They're also 0-2

their OTHER 2 Pac-12 losses were to the Utes. In those 2 games, Utah outscored
their WAC-ish and midmajorey little brother 78-31. Edge: Utah. HUGE edge!Essentially, for all our ineptitude vs. the Pac-12, holding only the 8th
best conference record (ahead of WSU, CU, Ariz, and Cal), we sure fared better
than little brother. Not sure what they're jeering at
Next to the Miami game, this has the makings of being the best football in Utah

AZUTE1, there is another team who has an nearly identical SOS to BYU since 1972.
That team has an overall record of 269-209 in that same time frame. I
don't know where that ranks in total wins but I would guess not in the top
50. Guess which team I'm talking about?
It's quite an interesting schedule, with so many middle tier teams on it
that anything from 4-8 to 9-3 is plausible. (For the record I think Utah
similarly ranges from 4-8 to 8-4).

@WiscougarfanWhich team? I don't know... but what
evidence do you have to think that BYU will fare better against a steady diet of
BCS opponents than said "mystery" team?btw... In
Bronco's tenure BYU has lost 100% of its games against ranked BCS
@ Naval Vet--Anybody, including each and every OSU fan I spoke with
following this game, immediately concluded how UTAH obviously beat themselves in
this game. Not only did UTAH outgain OSU in total-yards by nearly 100, OSU
drove the length of the field precisely once, all game long, and this was deep
into the 2nd half. In other words, UTAH gifted them 2 unforced TOs down by
their own goal-line, resulting in 2 easy TDs, which constituted 2/3 of
OSU's total-points for the game. Furthermore, UTAH drove down near
OSU's goal-line on another occasion, only to turn the ball over via a
fumble on yet another unforced TO.The difference was UTAH committing
unforced TOs and JWIV dropping a wide-open pass with only daylight between him
and the endzone, not OSU's D, which was merely in the right place at the
right time, certainly not because they did anything even remotely spectacular.
Furthermore, other than that one, single 2nd half drive, UTAH's D straight
dominated OSU, holding them to barely over 200 total-yards for the game on their
homefield. This was, unequivocally, a game we should've won, hands-down.
Gotta love Ute fans. A 3-9 season (as per College Football News) is staring
them in the face and they're still trolling BYU articles. Or maybe
that's the reason they would rather talk about BYU....Incidentally, what makes Ute fans think they will win their opening game
against Utah State?
Re: AZUTE1"BYU caught a down UT the last time around"Well, what goes around comes around AZ. Utah caught a discouraged and
disinterested Alabama team in the Sugar Bowl. Alabama lost its #1 ranking and
conference championship to Florida. Alabama lost its best player. Alabama lost
half of its starting offensive line. Alabama played 16 freshmen.Yeah, Utah caught a down Alabama team last time around.
FelisConcolor--"Gotta love Ute fans. A 3-9 season (as per
College Football News) is staring them in the face and they're still
trolling BYU articles. Or maybe that's the reason they would rather talk
about BYU...."Yet, nothing from you regarding this article, nor
byu football in general. Nothing to add here?
@FelisConcolorWhat makes Cougar Nation think they will win their
game against Utah State... or their final game against Utah?
. . . and it begins.
@ Howard S"btw... In Bronco's tenure BYU has lost 100% of its
games against ranked BCS opponents." So desperate for attention that
you're inventing false statistics? Check your sources closer next time.
BTW. How many for utah with Witt? Shall I check? At least It will be correct.@Azute "This was, unequivocally, a game we should've won,
hands-down." Funny how all utah fans on these boards claim that BYU fans say
the same everytime they lose to utah. And I wasn't aware that because you
beat a rival you are automatically a better team even if said rival has a better
record with a similar SOS. I guess teams that win the World Series or NBA finals
against teams that beat them in the regular season aren't actually
champions. I'll research to when that changed.@Chris Bstill delirious as usual. Congrats on your auto win over FCS Weber St. utah
may need some luck to finish better than 1-11. I'll agree with the 3-9
prediction. And one of those will not come against your wiser brother down
south.@MacNastyAMEN! AT least with me and all other USC
fans/alumni I know, we agree.
As long as the cougs don't take Ash out like they did Bradford in the OU
game, my Longhorns will have a great outing on August 31st. Texas is set for a
breakout season. Hook'em!!!
Howard SThe assertion that Mendenhall has never beaten a ranked BCS
team is misleading -- both Oklahoma and Oregon State were ranked when BYU beat
them in 2009.Now if you're defining a BCS "ranked team"
as one which finished the season in the top 25, then Whittingham's record
isn't much better -- the only win he has against a ranked BCS team is the
2009 Sugar Bowl.Considering the Utes' record so far against
PAC-12 teams with a winning record, I don't expect that to change any time
That's a nother $6,000,000 to $8M for us! Cha-ching!
re: FelisConcolorCollege Football predictions in June are as
meaningless as someone who uses them as the basis for an argument.
@maq@FelisConcolorYes... BYU under Bronco has never beaten a
ranked BCS team. And yes based on final polls... you know the teams
that have proven themselves throughout the season. But if you include
only those that were ranked at the time of the game... BYU gets beat 80% of the
time... feel better now?
This is the #1 game I want to watch on BYU's schedule this year. No game
is better in my opinion. Texas is much improved, as is BYU. Texas struggled
against any team with a decent defense. I think BYU will match up well with
Texas. What a home game! Better than playing usu or Weber to begin the season
that is for sure!
AZUTE1Conspicuously missing from your SOS whining is a comparison
with Utah's win total since 1972Most wins since 1972#5 BYU - 357 wins since 1972 - SIXTEEN 10+ win seasons#7 Texas - 349
wins since 1972 - SIXTEEN 10+ win seasons#?? Utah - 269 wins since 1972 -
SIX 10+ win seasonsFeel free to try to make the argument that
Utah's brief foray into the PAC 12 accounts for Utah's paltry win
total.Sometimes is best just to remain silent...
@AZUTE"UTAH gifted them 2 unforced TOs down by their own

make any more excuses? First of all,if you want to talk unforce errors, look at
the gifts BYU gave to U the last couple of years. So is it OK to say that Utah
didn't win those games, but that BYU gave it to them (unforced TO's)?
Which is it? I guess it depends on if you are wearing the crimson lenses. Also, I thought that the whole point of playing defense was to be in the
right place at the right. That is how you make a play, and the point of
@ Howard S.And most of Utah's wins against ranked teams have
come against BYU. So what is your point?
Red checkered shirt suspender utes, don't worry about BYU's schedule
or that ESPN 2 is on a hundred million tv sets, or that BYU is making national
noise in football, basketball and baseball. You said were
aren't your rival anymore, so be happy for the Cougs little bro! It's
to the hill dwelling apologistsAverage Sagarin ranking during the
Independent/PAC era#30 BYU#50 UtahDespite your
whiny spin, SOS is included in Sagarin's rankings. The main reason
you're ranked so far below the Cougars isn't SOS, it's losing to
unranked teams and losing teams like 10-loss Colorado.
Looks like little bro's can't leave BYU articles alone again. The continued domination of BYU!
@AZUTE1Wow, that's incredible, because everybody that I've
talked to about the BYU/Utah game concluded that BYU obviously beat themselves
that game. I mean, they out-gained Utah by almost 100 yds, Utah NEVER drove the
length of the field on BYU, and BYU gifted the Utes an unforced error on a
botched snap and fumble that led directly to a TD for Utah, which ultimately
proved to be the difference in the game.Furthermore, other than that
one 39-yard TD pass that the Cougar D gave up, BYU's D straight-up
DOMINATED Utah, holding them to a little more than 200 yards for the game on
their homefield. This was, unequivocally, a game BYU should have won,
hands-down.Nice job with that, AZUTE1. It's nice to know that
U understand completely that Utah's win over BYU was total luck, just like
the OSU game over Utah apparently was as well.Lol!Go
Hey Utes:Let the envy flow through your veins.
"ESPN, ESPN2 I dont get why people make a big deal out of the difference,
makes none to me."According to the Deseret News earlier this year, a
BYU game on ESPN gets 1.5 million viewers versus ESPN2 where they pull in a
million. So for the BYU Texas game ESPN2, expect 1 million viewers.
What good is national exposure, when you can't even beat the big name teams
on national TV?
@SwoopTexas, Utah, BYU?I see two that are included and
one that continues to wait... and wait... and wait by the phone.
howieIncluded: BYU and Texas as National Champions, Heisman Trophy
Winners, National Hall of Fame Players, Top 25 Dynasties, and perennial Top 25
teamsStill waiting and waiting and waiting and ... : Utah
@SwoopTexas did all those things against top tier competition.BYU did them against WACish competition.Did you know that
BYU backed into it's NC without beating a single ranked team... the only
such NC ever. And the rules were changed to ensure that a "BYU
type" NC never occurred again. To pretend that BYU is even
remotely equivalent to Texas is laughable. That's why BYU is on
the outside looking in on the big boy table of college football.
In the Howard S. tenure BYU ironically occupies 100% of the mental space of a
person who claims BYU is not worth any time
Re: Howard S."BYU did them against WACish competition."And Utah did Nothing against WACish competition Howie. You can gnash
your teeth all you want, but the fact remains BYU has an NC, you have none,
nada, zip, zero. You have only two good years and 5 top 25 finishes in your
entire program's history with the vast majority of those years playing
WACish opponents. The only thing in your football trophy case is a
trophy you won against a disinterested and injured Alabama team (best player was
injured, did not play and of half of their starting offensive line injured and
did not play; played 16 freshmen). Nothing else but dust Howie.Better watch out. The Utes only return 6 players on offensive and 6 players on
defense which is the lowest in the PAC. You need to support your own team
Howard, you will feel better.

research to when that changed."I guess in your eyes and other
cougie fan's eyes there shouldn't even be a world series, Superbowl,
etc. At the end of the season they should just poll a bunch of people and the
higher ranking wins the superbowl because head to head match up's
don't matter no need to play the game....LOL@swoop.....Why list
records starting in 1972? If were going to go back that far why don't you
list us the records for the entire history and see who has the most wins?@Mcnasty..."Alabama team (best player was injured, did not play and
of half of their starting offensive line injured and did not play; played 16
freshmen)" Those 16 freshmen have won 3 Nat titles following a
loss to the utes I would say they were pretty good. Anybody trying to discredit
a win against this team just looks foolish.
Re: 2BCSWINSI think it is obvious that the 16 players were not
freshmen in the later years. Also, those players had graduated before Alabama
won its last BCS NC. They won two as sophmores and seniors.Good
try, but the fact remains they were freshmen when Utah them Alabama.Better luck next time.FYI: When Utes fans that comment on
articles stop trying to minimize BYU's accomplishments, I will likewise
comply. That's a good deal for you since I have a lot more material to
@HowieOuch...Swoop just owned U.U know what's
great, Howie? No matter how much U wish BYU's National Championship
didn't count, it still does, and will forever count in the records of
college football (and be more valid than the 'split championship'
awarded in 2003 when those new rules U talked about resulted in a BCS champ with
LSU, but an AP champ with USC).Which makes watching your whining
about it all the more sweeter.Fun little factoid: there were two
teams in the PAC last year who finished 9th or worse in football, basketball AND
baseball...Washington St and Utah. How does it feel to know that your
program is on the same level as WSU (and is as relevant as Wazzu, which is to
say, not at all)? It's pathetic that BYU has lost to a program
of that caliber for three years in a row, regardless of how flukey two of those
losses were. It's even MORE pathetic that Utah IS a program of
that caliber.No wonder you're here on BYU's boards...not
much to cheer about over on Utah's.Lol!Go Cougars!
AZUTE1:"BYU has played against 5 PAC-12 teams to date. They are
2-3."And in the same time period utah is 7-11 vs. the PAC 12.
Ergo BYU > utah. 66.7% > 63.6%AND utah hasn't even
played the top two teams in the PAC 12 yet. This is too easy. LOL
@Mcnasty...FYI: When Utes fans that comment on articles stop trying to minimize
BYU's accomplishments, I will likewise comply. That's a good deal for
you since I have a lot more material to work with. When the cougies
reach a bowl thats BCS caliber let alone win it I'll start recognizing
their accomplishments. To date their two biggest bowl win's is the cotton
bowl and holiday bowl. Tell you what once they reach let alone win one of the
following bowls I'll give them all the credit in the world. Until then you
can minimize whatever you want but the fact remains Utah has not only reached
but won as well two of these bowls. The cougies have never even been to the
dance. Yes they won nat title in 84 but they didnt have to prove theirself in
one of these bowls against a top 5 team like Utah did in 2008. RoseFiestaSugarOrange
"AND utah hasn't even played the top two teams in the PAC 12
yet."...Neither has BYU. In fact, the only two PAC teams BYU
played with a winning record beat the Cougars easily...at home.
Re: 2BCSWINSDid you win an NC? NO! But you Ute fans on BYU articles
crow like you did. You were a bride's maid and nothing more. Nobody cares
about 2nd best or 5th best except you and your other little brothers up North.
You were not first. You don't have an NC, you don't have a Heisman,
Davey O'Brien, Doak Walker, 17 top 15 finishes and multiple times more
conferences championships than you. We also have been recognized by Athlon as a
football dynasty. Oh, and somewhere amongst the plethora of awards there is a
coach of the year award to boot.Let's compare trophy cases
shall we. BYU's is full. And yours? Maybe you can go to the nearest trophy
shop and buy a couple of dozen or so to fill it up.You and your ilk
and the only fans in the country that point to a 2nd place finish almost five
years ago.Just like little brothers, Ute fans make a lot of noise on
BYU articles in an exercise in futility to attract attention. Well, you attract
attention, but not relevance.
2BUtah had been playing football for THIRTY years before BYU started
their program in 1922. Their first team consisted entirely of 1st-year, walkons
with only a handful of Freshman, a brand new coaching staff, and practically no
budget. It wasn't until 1925 that BYU even had a handful of 4-year players.
30 of the first 40 games in the series were played at Utah because BYU
didn't even have a football stadium of their own.17 losses and
3 ties later, BYU finally won it's first game against Utah, in 1942.Because of World War II, BYU then suspended its football program until
1946, while Utah continued right on playing. Only SIX players from BYU's
1942 team returned in 1946, NONE with more than one-year's playing
experience, so once again BYU was starting from scratch. To say that
the odds were stacked entirely in Utah's favor from 1922 to 1961 is a gross
understatement. Then, BYU decided to get serious about football,
joined Utah in 1962 to help create the WAC, built their own football stadium,
and in 1965 began leaving Utah in the dust.Since 1965, BYU is 29-19
SportsfanNice summary; it puts Utah's early
"domination" in the series into perspective.Thanks.
SportsFanTo put BYU's 3-year (1943 to 1945) break from football
in perspective:When the NCAA handed down the so-called "death
penalty" by canceling SMU's entire 1987 schedule and part of the 1988
season, SMU opted to sit out the entire 1988 season as well after school
officials determined it would be impossible to field a viable team after missing
a little over a year. The severity of the penalty left the SMU
football program in shambles. The Mustangs had only one winning season over the
next 20 years and failed to make another bowl game until 2009. To date, it is
one of the most severe penalties ever imposed on a Division I program, and the
only time the NCAA has canceled a football-playing school's entire season
at any level.
@Mcnasty.....Let me know when the cougies play in let alone win a Fiesta, Sugar,
Rose, or Orange bowl. Once that happens I will give them credit for making it
happen. Let me ask you Mcnasty if the cougies are so much better than Utah and
have such a better history. Why is it they have never played in one of these
bowls? There so much better than Utah, right? If that's the case answer me
honestly why has Utah won two of these bowls yet the cougies have never even
played in one?@Sports fan..."Since 1965, BYU is 29-19 versus
Utah."Good work laying out the excuses cougie fan's are
famous for excuses for losing games to Utah. Anybody can go out and grab the
years their team looks better. That dosen't change the fact that Utah
absolutley dominates this series overall. If we just want to pick a
year to start then I'll go with since 1993 Utah is 13 - 7 against BYU or
why not go since 2002 Utah is 8 - 3 against BYU.
Y>UU call them excuses; I call them legitimate reasons why BYU
wasn't very competitive during its first 40 football seasons. What's your whiny excuse for not even cracking the AP Top 25 in your
first 100 seasons?

BYU had a great run and nobody can take that from you, so enjoy the trophies and
past memories. However, what needs to be acknowledged here is that all of those
awards and accomplishments have done absolutely nothing for BYU. Not one of the
Big 5 conferences even gave BYU the time of day during all the expansion and
re-shuffling. The reality is that BYU is just another "good" mid-major
who doesn't even have the excitement of competing for a conference title.
The best season BYU fans can realistically hope for is a ranked finish and a win
in a mid-level bowl game.
@Two forLet us know when Utah competes for a Conference Title, in
any sport. As of now, they're bringing up the rear in the Pac 11.1, in
every sport. And Academically.Meanwhile, BYU just won the WCC
Commisioners Cup, indicative of the best overall athletic program. Just as BYU
did every year, while in the WAC and Mtn. West, winning over half of all
Championships over 40 years.Something Utah never did.BYU
plays for BYU, her fans and exposure. They have it in spades, while Utah is
nowhere to be found.Your pejorative rants notwithstanding.
@ BlutoPejorative rants? Your hyperbole is silly. I posted my
opinion about the current standing of BYU football (without insulting anybody or
taking cheap shots). Clearly it holds some merit because instead of responding
to the points I made, you took the chance to take pot shots at Utah and talk
about everything except football. Congrats on the WCC Com. cup.
That is an award BYU should win every single year. BYU is bigger and better in
virtually every imaginable way compared to the rest of the WCC. I think the
Cougars belong in a better conf.
