The only actual "reform" needed is aggressive enforcement of existing
immigration law. But that is exactly what Beattie and the Chamber do not want.
Why? Cheap labor. It is about two things: Amnesty, or rewarding
lawbreakers with the very objective of their lawbreaking, namely, legal
residency status; and, flooding the labor market with still more foreign workers
after that -- all for cheap labor. But Beattie doesn't want
you to know that. That is why he is using the obfuscative euphemism,
"comprehensive immigration reform," and frantically pushing for
immediate passage of the Gang of Eight bill, before you have a chance to
discover how horribly bad for America it actually is. The
underlying premise of Beattie's statement is false. There is no labor,
skill, nor talent shortage in the United States. But greedy businesses have
discovered that they can get away with paying foreign workers a lot less than
the fair wage they would have to pay an American. It is not about what is best
for America. It is about what is best for the greedy businessmen who don't
want to pay their fellow American a fair wage. That's what this really is
I imagine business receiving amnesty for hiring people here illegally is a major
concern of the Chamber.

There are several positive items in the proposed immigration bill now in the U S
Senate and many of the item mentioned by President Beattie that make good sense,
probably the most meaningful is the domestic need for certain skilled people.
If reasonable provisions can be worked out, and Senator Hatch has been working
on some of them, this can be one of the positive things. And, there can be
strong arguments made for giving illegals who have lived in this country for a
long time without having legal problems a pathway to working legally if they
return to their home country to make application and if they have a sponsor.But, the ultimate priorities in this immigration overhaul must include
stronger border control and enforcement of a mandatory status verification
system for employers to use in their hiring practices. These two very important
items must come first before anything else is decided on and implemented.
