Wow! This state has courage.
Go, Rhode Island! :-)I especially love the fact that the RI Senate
Republicans voted unanimously in FAVOR of gay marriage. From the
Boston Globe:"The state Senate provided drama and an emotional
debate in April, though in the end the 26-12 vote was emphatic. The
chamber’s five Republicans all supported the measure, apparently becoming
the first legislative caucus in the US to unanimously support gay marriage,
according to Senate Minority Leader Dennis L. Algiere, a Republican from
Westerly."Good on ya, guys!
Here's a few additional points, from various news articles:"an intense broad-based advocacy campaign that included the governor,
business leaders and religious leaders"Didja get that? RELIGIOUS
LEADERS helped to get gay marriage legalized in RI. So much for the anti-gay
folks who insist that gay marriage is an attack on religion as a whole. And BUSINESS LEADERS also helped -- because they realize that equal rights is
GOOD for business."Delaware is likely to be next, perhaps as
soon as next week. Illinois and Minnesota are also on track for passage."Three more states, coming right up! :-)In fact, the Delaware
House has already passed the bill. It goes for a vote in their state Senate next
week. Delaware already recognizes same-sex civil unions. The
Illinois Senate has also passed their bill already, and that vote will be coming
up in their House soon. One **lay minister** (there's that
religion again) in Delaware who supports the bill remarked: "What matters is
that government treats us all as equals under the law".Illinois' GOP Part Chairman has publicly endorsed gay marriage. The
governors of all three states support gay marriage.
Another win for equality. Thank you, Rhode Island.
