Wilson looked good against a defense of mostly walkons plus a few offensive
players. It was fun to see him put drives together and make some nice
connections with K Scott, but ease up on the "solved depth issues" talk,
Brad, this scrimmage doesn't tell us a lot. By the time fall camp comes
around, I expect the real battle to be between Wilson and Cox, but Schulz has
definitely proven his legitimacy on the team. Of all the positions to walk onto
a football team and even just earn a scholarship, QB would definitely have to be
Will be a great race in the south. I can see anyone winning other than Colorado.
I think everyone will beat up everyone. If the offense is finally
put together and I think it is, we could have a great seasonWith two
coaches that combine for several national championship, bcs wins, undefeated
seasons, this season could indeed be rosey I like our chances as
well as anyone in the south. I am still 100 percent behind
whittingham. Top 10 coach in the nation. Lets be thankful we have him. Great
coach and great man. Classy all around. Proud of our program!

wierd u look claiming to be in the running every year for a,BCS Bowl. U are a
20-35 ranked team at best.
It's spring And to spruce things up around the house I bought two new
doormats. They look nice but worf, I wouldn't say I'm proud of them
Great spring game. I noticed that there was very little about special teams. Tom
Hackett had one punt for 53 yards, but the kickers did not do any kickoffs or
field goals. Only PATs which any high school kicker can hit. That was a bit

I wish the Utes the best of luck this year - unless they are playing BYU. Chris
B, you sound just like those BYU fans you make fun of. I am still laughing!
Pac 12 Fever- Huh??? Not a single Ute fan on the comments on this article said
anything about winning the South. Chris B doesn't count. EVERYONE knows
he's just a troll. ThomasJefferson proclaimed himself a BYU/Nebraska fan.
A little obsessive wishful thinking on your part?I am excited about
the progress the Utes are making. There is some really nice looking depth on
the O-line. There is some depth at QB. The DBs are looking good. I would like
to see a step forward this year. The schedule is pretty brutal though.
Hopefully we'll be in a bowl game in December.
WorfIf its so quick and easy, what's BYU's excuse?
I think both Utah and BYU have a chance to get back on track. I think both have
more stability at the Quarterback spot than we have seen the last couple of
years. I think the match-up of Wilson and Hill will be a great one to watch this
So Bass,Speaking of doormat, when was the last time the y beat the Utes?
As an ASU alum, I hope that the U can make the necessary adjustments and put
together a solid year in the PAC this year. But be careful about anointing your
boys "PAC12 South Champs" before you've made much noise in the PAC
since getting here...The PAC isn't an easy road (as you've
found out...), and just as you're making adjustments and stepping up, so
are some of your fellow PAC schools as well (you can have Dennis, I'm glad
we upgraded to Coach Graham...).Here's to a successful year in
the PAC for all member schools! And for you U Fans, we'll see you on
November 9th at the RES...35-14 again?
I seriously can't believe the endless bickering between BYU and Utah fans
over games played and won in the past. The best thing about College Football is
there is a new season every fall. Things that happened in 2008 or clear back in
1984 mean nothing. Every player, coach, team, and program has to prove and
improve themselves each and every year. Although I'm sure Utah has
made significant changes and improvement in preperation for the coming year, so
has EVERY other program in the PAC-12. Last season all Utah fans and most
College football Specialists predicted Utah challenging USC for the South and a
Rose Bowl berth. UCLA, Arizona, and ASU all introduced new coaches and
Utah's "Top 10" coach lost to each of them. Next season Utah
could climb to the top and go undefeated, or go 1-11. Teams that play you dont
care if you won the Sugar Bowl in 2008.
To D4inSLC:The most recent Y win over Utah will be September 21 of
this year. Put it in writing. It's done deal.
Mark D: Being a part of the Pac-12 conference is a thrill and, as you correctly
observed, has required a big adjustment in expectations. The quality of
athletics and fans in our new conference is second to none. While we are hoping
for a different outcome on November 9th, it is always a privilege to host ASU.
As you stated...here's to a successful year in the PAC for all
@Thomas Jefferson You do realize the BYU blue/white game had nearly
twice the attendance this utah game did right? And that was during the festival
of colors, which oddly enough attracts tens of thousands of people.
Worf is right. Utah is a totally easy win. Well except for byu.
agarrett,Besides the weather factor That's because those two
events were all there were to do in Happy Valley that weekend. You know the
Festival of Colors isn't going to draw many from the BYU crowd and visa
versa so most only had one entertainment choice that Saturday.

Read the comments and haven't seen much that has anything to do with the
article. I think the point was Utah has solved the depth issue at QB and I
agree. We don't have an upper level PAC 12 QB at this point but a couple
of soph's that can play and could be pretty good. Also some freshman
behind them plus a couple of wild cards. Much different from the past two years
when the cupboard was bare. As a die hard fan, I am hoping to see a
bowl game this year as my optimistic prediction.
I don't think it can be denied that utah has improved its qb situation. It
would be hard not to be better than what they have been the last several years.
But whether or not they are going to be good is very much an unanswered
question. They have more guys on the roster, we'll see how good those guys

@waccyI love how utah "fans" like yourself go on and on
about how having losing records and not going to bowl games is somehow better
than winning records and going to bowl games. utah would have given anything to
play in the kraft fight hunger or armed forces bowl last season. The utah
"fan" defense mechanism of pretending that they wouldn't have loved
it is very amusing for the rest of us to see. Maybe you and naval
vet can get together and watch the couch potato bowl again this year and then
try to tell us how great it is in comparison to going to a real bowl game.LOL!
@ sammyg "...it (the Rose Bowl) is the hope and delusional dream of every
Ute fan out there."That's probably the same message sammy
was posting in 2008 (and 2004).sammy @ duck, rather than your
continual bashing of a football program your Cougars can't beat, why
don't you provide us with your assessment of the steps BYU needs to take to
upgrade their program to a higher level. You have to admit that nobody will
take the Cougs serious if they can't beat a doormat like Utah.
"The Granddaddy Of Them All" is the hope and dream of every team and
their fans in the Big 10 and the Pac12(The Conference Of Champions). As a Ute
fan, I'm finding it very enjoyable to be a part of that.Sammy
and Duck get all frantic and emotional knowing that it could end up being Utah
vs the WAC in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.Simply put, Utah would
have to settle for the hope and dream of the tds.
"utah would have given anything to play in the kraft fight hunger or armed
forces bowl last season."Quick test. Can you name the opponents in
last years Kraft and Armed Forces bowl last year without going to the internet?
Of course not, because nobody cares. So no, Utah fans wouldn't
have "given anything" to keep a bowl streak alive. If that was
important, Utah would have stayed to dominate the MWC. It means more to fans
when Utah earns a bowl bid as member of the PAC 12. TCU barely earned a bowl
berth at 7-6. Do you think their fans are clamoring to get out of the BIG
12?It was "very amusing" to watch the envious remarks from
down south, but now its been a couple of years. Shouldn't you be over it?
Its starting to sound sad. For example: "the BYU blue/white game had nearly
twice the attendance this utah game". That's just pitiful.
sammyg:"'If the Utes can start 4-0, watch out Rose
Bowl!'...This was stated by one of your very own on another article so
it's official. The Rose Bowl fever has a confirmed case."Don't be so frantic and emotional. You found TWO Ute fans talking about
the Rose Bowl throughout TWO articles. This does not constitute "Rose Bowl
FEVER"! I get that you're just desperate for some barbs -- ANY barbs
-- to throw at Utah, but you're just embarrassing yourself if that's
all you've got.I know...it really stung you to see your team
lose 3 in a row, 8 of the last 11, and be on the losing end of a generation gap
in the all time series, but you are REALLY having a tough time with it. Sweet!
@sooneruteWell if that is the case you'll be happy to sit at
home again this year because that is utah's most likely destination.
I'm glad to see that you are preparing yourself for that eventuality by
trying to pretend that is preferable to actually have a winning record and
actually going to a bowl game.LOL!
I agree with duckhunter, Utah should have scheduled Idaho, Weber St., Hawaii and
New Mexico State last year.... then we would have been invited to a bowl game.
"How Utah got in that situation is a familiar story. The Utes didn't
recruit enough quarterbacks and Wynn kept getting hurt. "Brad
Rock you're a coward. The Utes recruited a lot of QB's, problem was
Coach Whittingham kept moving them to other positions. Devonte Christopher was a
prolific passer in high school and Whitt moved him to WR. Brian Blechen was a 3
star QB in California and Whitt moved him to LB. Griff Robles was a 3 star QB in
the state of utah and Whitt moved him all over (he ran the ball way more than he
ever passed it). Then on top of that lack of foresight, he had the
brilliance to think that the brittle Jordan Wynn would be good enough to get
them through not 1 but 2 Pac12 seasons ("fool me once..."). Has there
been a bigger coaching blunder ever in the state of utah?It was a
joke that you even started making excuses for players decommitting (Brown) or
not committing at all (Eubanks). That happens all the time (isn't that how
Wynn ended up at Utah instead of Colorado?). Eubanks didn't even commit at
all. That's pretty lame.
Big CougYour only telling half the story.DVC tried to
make it as a QB at Utah, but didn't get it done. The general consensus on
him as a player was that he wasn't D-1 QB, which is why Rivals had him as
an athlete, and Scout had him as a safety.Robles couldn't
surpass John Hayes on the depth chart. Hayes was brought in was because Chow
didn't see any viable QBs behind Wynn. Blechen didn't
even play QB his senior year, questioning the move to defense is a joke.Yes, Derrick Brown did commit to Utah, and in turn, Utah committed to
him, by shutting down QB recruitment. Brown reopened it, tripped to Washington
and flipped. When he tripped to Washington, Utah reopened their recruiting QBs.
Chow had been hired, and he almost flipped Eubanks to Utah, to the point where
the coaches thought he was going to commit. You also forgot 4 star
recruit Terrance Cain out of Blinn. He didn't pan out, but it's not
like the coaches didn't know they had a need. If he pans out, who knows
what would have happened with Wynn.
Solving the QB depth issue is scary. The PAC 12 now has a tiger in the tank.
U 90--somehow I knew ute fans would be whining of their tough schedule. Rose
Bowl becomes a Thorn Bowl. Big Sky Conference is now looking very good.
Worfhow is the Big sky? You guys play half the teams from it
@worfThat tiger's going to eat the cougars lunch. lol."Big Sky Conference is now looking very good." To bad, they don't
want you either. lol.
@PocyUteDVC spent about 15 minutes at QB before being moved? As for Griff,
he went on his mission and then never got the time of day at QB after his
return. Blechen split time at QB with Brody Rohach his senior year of H.S. (both
were seniors) and was 15th ranked QB nationally. Also, wasn't Cain 7-1 as a
starter (iirc)?QB isn't a plug and play position. It takes time
to develop them. John Beck the freshman/sophomore looked nothing like John Beck
the junior/senior. Its called coaching. If Kyle wants to move all of
his QB recruits to other positions that's fine, just recruit twice as many
as normal so you have depth. No coach gambles that his recruiting efforts are
going to pay off with just one or two guys at a position and that they're a
lock to commit. Smart HC's have backup plans and are ready if their 1st or
2nd options don't bite. There's no way to hide the fact
that Kyle whiffed BIG time and at the absolute WORST time, right b4 joining the
disingenuous whinersEvery Ute fan would have been ecstatic to go to
any bowl game last year. Even if they had one in Laramie on Dec 3rd.You're too funny. Let the Rose Bowl and South Division dominance talk
continue. This is hilarious. For over three years we've heard
the hype on how the U. was going to dominate the conference. It hasn't
happened, nor will it and another season like last year... and the pitchforks
and torches will be coming out.I want to hear more of the
'proud' to be in the PAC12 even when we lose comments. Brings a tear
to my eye every time someone shares their deep feelings about Ute sports.
I love how utah "fans" have gone from "we are going to the rose
bowl" to "our schedule is so hard". It is just an excuse, and one we
are going to hear year after year for decades. You're either good enough or
else you aren't. utah isn't, 5-7 proves it. Losing conference records
the last 2 years prove it. Never beating a conference team with a winning record
proves it. Whining that your schedule is hard proves it.
Utah will win the Rose Bowl this year! Then Kyle will get fired for mismanaging
his quarterbacks.BYU will fail to qualify for a bowl game! Then the
Cougars will join the NFL and Bronco will lead them to a Super Bowl win next
"The Utes recruited a lot of QB's, problem was Coach Whittingham kept
moving them to other positions."Why is that a problem? In high
school, a kid is often the quarterback because he is the best athlete on the
team. In college, "true" quarterbacks are identified, and the other
athletes moved to new positions. You make it sound like Coach Whittingham is
doing something unusual, when actually he is copying what the other major
programs do. Cougar fans have complained that NOT moving the
quarterback to another position was "a problem" last year. Riley Nelson
was a good athlete that could have contributed to the team in another position.
He could play quarterback, but he fell short of the great BYU quarterbacks. You
should encourage BYU's coaching staff to think of quarterbacks as athletes
-- just like Whittingham does.
Big coug, I'm not saying he didn't whiff, but I don't think
it's as easy as just switching people out of the postion. DVC was a great
athlete, just not a D-1 QB. Chow, QB guru, was the one who had Griff buried on
the depth chart along with Tyler Shreve (who we both forgot about and who left
after a year)Personally I think it was evidence of the lack of
organization on the offensive side of the ball. I THINK Kyle has the fix in
place with Erickson, we won't know for a few years, but one thing is for
sure, the stable of Qbs has never been bigger than it is right now at Utah. Now
let's see if the system and coaching can maximize the talent.
I do find it interesting that some of the same utah "fans" that were
critical of the number of qb's BYU had on its roster are now saying what a
great thing it is that utah has so many qb's on its roster.Yes
that is fact, many utah "fans" went on and on about what a waste it was
to have 6 qb's on the roster since they can't all play, how those
spots were better spent on other positions, how BYU was mismanaging its roster
because they had to many qb's, blah, blah, blah.My how opinions
change. I can guess why they have changed. Obviously it should be apparent to
even a utah "fan" that you need depth at the qb position. Maybe they
have actually learned that fact. It should also be apparent at this point that
you need to actually recruit multiple qb's to actually sign one qb and you
need to recruit qb's that you actually intent to keep at qb. Maybe utah "fans" and coaches have gained some insight and wisdom that
BYU fans and coaches have had for a long time. Maybe.
Yes actually, the Utes fans and coaches have much to learn from the tds. In fact
we should go independent in football and join the Big Sky for our Olympic
sports. Can we borrow the tv truck on the week ends, since it don't get
used on Saturdays and Sundays?Actually, I don't know why all of
them Utah quarterbacks are still here. They should of gained some insight and
wisdom from Mr. Heaps.
Duckhunter:"I do find it interesting that some of the same utah
'fans' that were critical of the number of qb's BYU had on its
roster are now saying what a great thing it is that utah has so many qb's
on its roster."The same fans? Name them. And provide us with
the DNews article titles where your position can be verified. Please note that I know you (and sammyg) like to make stuff up and dispute
strawmen, then "LOL" about it, so I'm going to call you out on it
everytime. If you fail to provide us with sufficient evidence, then you are
tacitly admitting you frantically and emotionally made it all up.
BIG BYU FAN HEREI hope the Utah has solved their QB depth issue. I
also like their new OC coaching hire. It's killing me that BYU has been
owned by Utah the last 4 years. Hoping for redemption this year so that Utah
seniors don't sweep us!Duckhunter and Worf - Stop trolling!
Like every other BYU fan, we know it kills us to lose to Utah. Nothing you say
about Utah having a losing record and not going to a bowl game is going to make
BYU look better. That is what makes the rivalry great! The Utes can beat us and
even if their season doesn't pan out, at least they beat us and can rub it
in all they want. Go Cougs! BYU 35 UTAH 34 - Here's hoping!
@SoonerUte"The Utes recruited a lot of QB's, problem was Coach
Whittingham kept moving them to other positions."Why is that a
problem?"Because he didn't have the sense to realize that
the QB position is the most important position on the team (not the LB position,
not the WR position, etc) and needed to keep adequate depth on the roster. He lead them into a historic first season in the Pac12 with a fragile
Jordan Wynn backed up by a guy who was a D-II QB just a few weeks earlier. This
was the season to get things started off right and create a great first
impression. He had 2 1st team All PAc Tackles, a 2nd team RB, a good
cast of WR's and TE's, and a great defense. With USC on probation and
other South Division foes having rebuilding years and NO Oregon or Stanford on
the schedule the path was clear for Utah to get to the CCG in their inaugural
season. Win that game and it's Rose Bowl first season! All that
was missing was a decent QB. Instead...Epic fail. Then he repeated that same
mistake in year 2.
@tylerYou're fooling no one. When you declare yourself a
"BIG BYU FAN" and then go on to try and criticize real BYU fans everyone
knows you are just a utah"fan" trying unsuccessfully to pretend you are
a BYU fan. Fail.
@DuckhunterI'm not trying to fool anyone. I love the Cougars
and hope they kill Utah every year. I'm a cougar club member and purchase
season tickets every year. I love my team. I am however, still a fan of Utah
teams and hope they do well except when they play BYU. I just think it's
stupid when Y fans make the rest of us look stupid by putting down another team
and their fans when they deserve credit where credit is due. I see BYU fans
constantly calling Utah their little brother, ragging on them for having a
losing schedule and not going to a better bowl game, and actually believing that
crap. Utah has been to 2 BCS games in the past 10 years (and dominated them) and
the past 3 years they beat BYU regardless of their record. They also got invited
to a better conference than the MWC and we didn't. I think BYU made the
best of a bad situation by going independent and I love their contract with
ESPN, but I would still rather be in a quality conference. Keep
trying to paint a better picture...
@tylerAnother failure utah"fan".
LOL at duckhunter having a kitten fight with an actual fan!
Hey Ute fans- I just want you guys to know that me and Ducky and Sammy are
BFFs. We're not obsessed with U. Were just concerned, very concerned
about U. We think going to the PAC12 where you will get to play against the
likes of UCLA, USC, Oregon, ASU,... is really scarry!
