I'm going to beat the Utah Trolls to the punch...It's a better bowl
than Utah played in last year.
We thoroughly enjoyed our bowl trip to San Diego last season, and, barring a BCS
bowl berth, looking forward to tripping to San Francisco this coming season.
I'd much rather go to this bowl than the Sun Bowl. And, who knows, maybe
this year we'll go to one of the big bowls.....
What are the chances that Utah will be the PAC-12 team going to this bowl?
I like the idea of playing your season in hopes of getting a bowl (or not) based
on your performance. I'm not sure why BYU accepts bowl bids before the
season starts?I don't find the low level bowls so exciting but
those who posted before me seem to...sounds like it works for us all..
Hey BabyFranklin, INYou contractually lock in a bowl or you
may find that your bowl hopes are all or nothing. As an independent, you
aren't going to have an "XYZ Conference 2nd place" slot to go to if
you don't make a big boy bowl. And since, as the billy goats
on the hill like to remind us, we aren't likely to go to an elite bowl game
unless we go undefeated, can you imagine the angst of an 11-1 BYU team locked
out of bowl consideration?
That's a perfect date. If that is the bowl they end up playing in then I
will be there. I always enjoy going to the bay area and the weekend after
Christmas is a really great date.
I'm a diehard BYU fan, but let's face it Cougar fans...this isn't
the year we will be going to the BCS. So enough with the "barring a BCS
invite" talk. Just book your flights to San Francisco and be content with
it. Hey, there's a new direct flight from Provo to San Fran! Even better.
Here's to hoping for a Holy War rematch in this one!
utah can only hope they will play in this bowl. I predict no bowling for little
brother in 2013.
Remember Cougie fans one loss and your Kraft Mac n' Cheese Bowl bound.
Gotta love Independence!
@bluecougie..."barring a BCS bowl berth, looking forward to tripping to San
Francisco this coming season."LOL...You're safe now to plan
trip to San Fran or no bowl thats the only options for the cougies next season.
Only one team in Utah has experienced a BCS bowl game and won BCS game that team
has done it twice so far.
@elmer fuddAgain, I'm not saying BYU will go to the BcS this
year, but nowhere is it written that a team has to go undefeated to go to the
BcS (see NIU). You just have to be ranked higher than the highest ranked team of
a BCS conference.
Ironic, and comical that if somehow the Utes manage to eek out 6 wins this year
they might qualify for the bowl they've bad mouthed for years now. Even
more ironic, and more comical is that the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl would be a
giant step up from the couch potato bowl the Utes played in last year (not
counting their September bowl, which is really the game the Utes care about the
@ agarrett"Again, I'm not saying BYU will go to the BcS
this year, but nowhere is it written that a team has to go undefeated to go to
the BcS (see NIU). You just have to be ranked higher than the highest ranked
team of a BCS conference"Obviously you don't know the
rules! The rule is a team from a non-aq "conference" must be ranked in
the top 12 to get an automatic berth into the BCS (see Utah 2004 & 2008, BSU
2006, Hawaii 2007, TCU 2009 & 2010; or a team from a non-aq
"conference" can rank in the top 16 if they're ranked higher than a
BCS conference champion (see BSU 2009 and NIU 2012). The point I'm making
is that the rules apply for non-aq teams in "conference". BYU isn't
in a conference and therefore the non-aq rule doesn't apply to them. If BYU
wants to go to the BCS, they have to rank in the top 2 to get an automatic bid
or rejoin the MWC. Gotta love Independence! It gives a team nothing
to play for unless your Notre Dame!
Independence is bliss! Knowing which bowl game you might go to (or not this
year) is so comforting. Ducky can purchase is airline tickets at a
discount and make sure he packs his Y sweat shirt in advance. That way when he
goes to Bubba Gumps and it's a bit chilly, he doesn't have to go buy a
byU sweat shirt on Peir 39 that he says are a dime a dozen.lol
Elmer Fudd,Sorry, but you are wrong. Teams in no aq conferences get
an automatic berth to a BCS game if they are ranked in the top 6. For Army, Navy
and BYU it is the top 2. Non aq conference teams qualify for at large berths if
they finish top 14. For Army, Navy and BYU it is top 12. The rule for an at
large berth if you finish top 16 and are ranked higher than a BCS conference
champion is the same for all teams not in a BCS conference. In 2014
the rules change all together and no one is sure how at this point.
It's surely an exciting reward to look forward to after next season,
provided you are bowl-eligible.
Cougars1:"Teams in no aq conferences get an automatic berth to a
BCS game if they are ranked in the top 6."That was only the case
for Utah back in 2004. In 2006, that ranking was lowered to Top-12."Non aq conference teams qualify for at large berths if they finish top
14. For Army, Navy and BYU it is top 12."That's not correct
either. The "qualifying" rank is Top-16. The "guaranteed" rank
is Top-12 if you're in a non-AQ conference, or Top-8 if you're Notre
Dame. Army, Navy, and the Y can "qualify" with a Top-16, but they
won't get it. There's too many "qualified" other candidates.
If the either of those 3 teams finished #5 in the Final BCS standings
(laughable, I know, but just for the sake of argument that is), and UTEP
finishes #12, UTEP gets in, and those aforementioned 3 can - and will - be left
Naval,Yes. My mistake. Top 12 instead of top 6. But I still maintain
that BYU qualifies for at large with a top 12 ranking. The problem there for BYU
is if a team from a nonBCS conference finishes in the top 12 along with BYU,
they would get in ahead of BYU because of the "gaurantee" because they
are in the top 12.One more year and it all changes anyway. Hopefully
next spring they will announce them along with whether the Cotton Bowl and
Citrus Bowl will be added to the group of bowls we now call the BCS.
The bowl system is not kind to BYU. Whether they win 6 games; or 10/11 they
probably end up in the same bowl. That's a major down side of being an
Maybe September's rivalry game game won't be the last before the
break? It's possible.
The Pac-12 certainly has ties to a lot of bowls. It seems like they add another
bowl to the list every year. So, apparently the last Pac-12 team (the worst
Pac-12 team) to qualify for a bowl will play BYU. That certainly seems
appropriate but BYU will likely find themselves an underdog. Go
MyPerspective:I believe the LAST Pac-12 team to qualify for a bowl
game goes to the New Mexico Bowl...where little brother played their last game
as a MWC member, back when that bowl was for the worst bowl eligible team for
the Mt. West. The Fight Hunger Bowl is for the 2nd to last Pac-12 team. But yes, they'll most likely be the underdog.
That would be like Colorado was the underdog in their first ever game against
their new rival?
PS - Bowl smack from Utah is hilarious. I forget, did the PAC even have enough
teams bowl eligible last year to fill their compliment of bowl invites?
