Let's see how well we can apprehend, detain and deport those who are
already here illegally.(By the way, that wording - apprehend, detain and
deport - came from the 1981 commission report that was the precursor to the 1986
amnesty. And that was a failure in terms of enforcement. We don't
get fooled again.
A 100% secure border will only fix 60% of the problem. A person can come here
under the guise of a visit to Disneyland and overstay their visa. The
tracking program, US-Visit, has been a government project for a decade and it
still doesn't work. Even if it did, it would only keep score. It does not
have an enforcement feature. What's lacking is the political will
deport those here illegally. HB4437 from 2005 was a good effort but it went
nowhere in the Senate. We need to make unlawful presence a felony. We
need to fix what the Supreme Court did by tightening loopholes about ID
Theft. And we need to deport people simply because they are here illegally,
not based on criminal activity.Until we do that, we are just setting
ourselves up for another round of illegal aliens.
I'm old, and this topic is soooooo old, I've been reading about it for
fifty years. Nothing has changed. It's like the war on drugs:
Billions have been spent on preventing incursion into the US, but I GUESS
billions more have been spent to look the other way.The border is
only as honestly secure as the men guarding it.
