Thank you Senator Bennett. I agree with your assessment of why President
Uchtdorf made his statement and I like your example.I think though
that many of the comments you referred to are because of something much more
shallow. President Obama is considered to be wrong about EVERYTHING by some
people and therefore their faith is shaken when a religious leader agrees with
anything he says. I disagree with a lot of what President Obama does and says,
but he is not the the emperor of the Galactic Empire. He is not pure evil.
Some of his motives and policies on immigration could be based on good values
and be agreeable to most of us.
Great Idea! Let's start by repealing the Gun Control Act of 1968
(it's as worthless as those who drafted it).
Yea, you are probably right...let's remove the speed limits off
roads...they are most certainly ineffective.
Now you can see why Sen. Bennett was not selected to represent the Utah
Republican Party in the 2010 General Election. Even if he had made it to the
primary it is doubtful that the millions of $$$ that he had spent would have
gotten him elected. Bennett's support of employers that hire illegal labor
at the expense of Utah workers was one of the reasons that he lost out at the
convention.Bennett says illegal immigration is a mess. This is true
only because the laws have not been enforced. If we were to follow
Bennett's logic marijuana should be made legal, since it is available
anywhere and a lot of people ignore the law. Perhaps alcohol and tobacco should
be made available to minors, since they seem to be able to get it whenever they
wantBennett's logic is that if large numbers of people ignore
the laws then the law should be repealed. What about abortion? Bennett
doesn't think that illegal aliens harm Americans. Yes they do, by flooding
the labor market and depressing wages. Yes then there are the illegal drugs and
crime committed by them. Bennett cares only about the employers.
Mr. Bennett's argument is specious, for at least two reasons. One, the reason immigration laws "don't work" -- "the
situation" -- is that corrupt government, at all levels, willfully refuses
to enforce them. Illegal aliens are here because they know that there is no
enforcement to speak of. They correctly view the United States as the pushover
that it is -- and they take advantage of it. The problem is especially acute in
Utah -- which is why Utah has the fastest-growing illegal-alien population in
the nation. The correct remedy, then, in this case, is not to throw
out the law, but rather to ENFORCE it, in earnest, for a change. Two, immigration law is NOT some meaningless, ridiculous law. Its wanton
violation has harmed this nation and its citizens in numerous ways. The ruin of
California offers one illustration.
Utah could start by removing the prohobition of Plural Marriage from its
Constitution. This is an attack on Religious Freedom. I don't practice it
but those who do believe they are following God. Remove the foolish section from
the Constitution - it doesn't even have a penalty.
