The citizenship test declares suffrage as our most important right. Each of us
ought to be required to prove we are eligible to vote.Back in the
amnesty days each of us was required to prove our citizenship by filling out our
first I-9 form and submit documents of proof. (I had been working for that
company for NINE YEARS at the time.)Likewise, we trudged down to the
Social Security office with our children and their birth certificates to have a
card issued before they could start school. No one filed a law suit then. But the government botched amnesty enforcement and now ONE THIRD of all
foreign-born are here illegally. Yes, I want the law enforced. Yes, I will
show the registrar my birth certificate to vote. It's that important. Now, if you want to make voter registration harder and take it away from paid
political activists, that would fix the problem. How about making everyone
register at the police station? I'm for that.
The article mentioned that the numbers of illegal voters were taken from those
who admitted voting illegally.. The actual numbers could be much, much higher.
Most of those who did so illegally will never admit it.
Voting is a right, a person shouldn't have to jumpthrough hoops to
exercise a right. Nor are thesehoops necessary. If Arizona has
evidence of voter fraud, let them present this evidence beforea
judge and if the evidence is sufficient, the judgeWill disqualify that
Prove citizenship when registering to vote before the election. But not at the
election site on election day.
Can non-citizens vote? If non-citizens cannot vote and if non-citizens have
voted in the past, then the only method that will restore order to the voting
process is to require those that vote show that they are eligible to vote.Citizenship has responsibilities. If it is too much to ask that a person
be known by the election judges as a citizen who has the right to cast a ballot,
then that citizen shouldn't be trusted with the responsibility of voting.
"The Obama administration is supporting challengers to the law."Why would the President of the United States want non-citizens to vote?
If I remember right Utah did a study in 2005 and found several hundred people
had registered that were here illegally. 8 0f the 11 hijackers that
were here illegally (overstayed visas) were registered to vote. In
2005, the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that up to 3 percent of
the 30,000 individuals called for jury duty from voter registration rolls over a
two-year period in just one U.S. district court were not U.S. citizens. 3% would
be enough to change Florida's vote in the 2000 election, giving Gore the
Presidency. A incumbent lost in 1996 in Cal;California by 979 votes,
624 invalid votes by non-citizens who were present in the U.S were discovered
because they had applied for citizenship. Another 124 improper absentee ballots
were found belonging to non citizens. The investigation, however, could not
detect illegal aliens, who were not in the INS records. Can we ever
trust our government over illegal immigration? I don't think we can.
The President hasn't shown us his birth certificate on his own. We could put people on buses, boats and aircraft to get them to come here to
vote. The attempt to keep military members from actually having their vote
count when they sent in a ballot has happened in several elections. I remember for 20 years in the military always having to find out when local
elections were, request an absentee ballot and hopefully getting it and then
mailing the vote in the specified timeframe. It was not easy for an absentee
voter back then. States offer people so many ways to vote legally at the polls,
early polls, and by absentee ballot for citizens. When we lived in
Illinois, Mississippi, Arizona, Texas, Germany and the Philippines, it was not
always easy to vote by absentee since we were residents of Washington State. It
has been so nice to be residents in Utah and vote at the polls or early voting.
Citizens are the what makes our country different than a lot of
other places in the world. Can you picture how many refugees live across the
border? We have people that come here to work and few refugees.
The Constitution states that poll taxes are illegal. If a person is required to
show a government document that must be purchased in order to vote, that amounts
to a poll tax. If we want to require these documents to be shown, then they
must be provided without charge. Perhaps, one free birth
certificate per person. Just throwing out an idea ...
Dear cjb and GZE, go and read teh 15th Amendment to the Constitution sometime.
Also the 19th and the 24th and 26th Amendments. Requiring valid ID
does not amount to a "poll tax". Voting is a perk of being a citizen.
If you are not a citizen, you are not allowed to vote. If you can't prove
you are a citizen, you can't vote.
I honestly do not see the issue with proving citizenship. You show up, show
your proper documentation, then vote. It is pretty simple actually. The only
reason I can see people not wanting to do this is because they might not have
the proper documentation. Voting is only a right if you are a citizen. And, if
non-citizens have admitted to voting, something needs to change immediately.
You should have to prove you're a citzen before you register to vote just
like you should have prove your age and have the proper credentials to get a
driver's license. I find it contradicting that a lot of posters here
arguing a person should have to prove citzenship before registering to vote are
the same ones that think you should not have to prove anything to get or carry a
I love the fact that people want to make it harder to vote than to own a gun.
Talk about wacky priorities!
You have to proove citizenship to get a passport, why is providing proof of
citzenship to vote any different?
It has to do with voting and electing someone that the entitled person wants to
be the President or other U.S. elected official. Remember that people that are
entitled don't want a person that is going to threaten their lifestyle to
change the entitlement process. In the 1930s when the entitlement type programs
were promoted by a President that was elected 4 times? He would still be in
office today if he hadn't died as he was the great proponent of entitlement
programs that still exist today. When the President pushed Congress
for his enactments, the country was still filled with immigrants of the past 50
years and the war scenario was coming upon us. Little did the people realize
that with the programs after WWII with the GI bill and Marshall plan that the
whole world would become entitled. The GI bill was a good program but when GIs
got that then other people wanted to have the FHA loans and free college bills.
It grows little by little until we pay Pakistan 100s of Millions of dollars as a
freebie. Money is cheap and becoming cheaper for this Administration to give,
give and give more.
Maudine- How so? To buy my last gun, I had to fill out a form for a background
check, I then had to wait for that to be approved, and then still had to have
proper ID with me as well. When registering to vote, you have to have ID
right? Why is it so hard to show proof of citizenship as well? Why is it so hard
to understand that only US citizens are allowed to vote, so it should be rather
obvious that you should have to prove your citizenship. I've been turned
down for a drink because I didn't have my ID with me, and I'm in my
40's. Maybe I should just whine and complain like liberals are about this
subject and maybe we could just do away with that pesky "must have ID to buy
booze" thing as well? I mean, if I say I'm legal, that should be enough
I always figured that this is how we ended up with the President that we now
have. Maybe he is looking to change other things like how many times a President
can run for office and wants to be sure that he AGAIN will have all the votes he
needs to get back in office again. The old saying "You scratch my back and I
will scratch yours" sure has worked well for him in the past-why not in the
I don't know what is required to register to vote via the federal system
but it could be a good way to get illegals to register, compare the names
against the IRS data base and not only locate them but find out if they are
paying taxes. Now that we know the federal government has the capability to
keep track of us in many ways this could be feasible.
