Mining the tar sands in eastern Utah would be a scam. The yield is only about
10% so for every 10 gallons of fuel it creates, the process requires 9 gallons
of fuel. Not to mention the water it requires and the poisons in the
environment. It's not worth it.

Building a house disrupts the environment. So do highways, reservoirs, and
farms for that matter. It's what mankind does, and mining is every bit as
necessary as farming. I don't see any cause for alarm in this article.
Energy extraction has a price, no matter what type or where it's done. Yes,
the Athabasca oil sands extraction is a huge operation. It's displaced
forest. So does logging, which is also visible in the area. It's in a
virtually unoccupied corner of northeastern alberta, which most people around
here would find forlornly empty and remote, let alone cold. But we've
already settled all this with three words: Drill, baby drill. This is our
mantra, so don't sweat the details. Anytime, anywhere, next to your house
or mine, it doesn't matter. We want cheap energy, let's not pretend we
aren't willing to do what it takes to get it.
At their core, humans are motivated solely by greed. It's a travesty of
justice that those who destroy the planet for profit are rewarded for their
selfishness while nature and the bulk of humanity suffer as a result. Humans are
slowly but surely killing ourselves.
@Mr. JohnsonI must call you on this one! Have you ever actually been to
the tar sands area? Have you even flown over Fort MacMurray? You haven't
the slightest clue what you are talking about! Have you even spoken with someone
of unquestionable repute who has been there? You haven't the slightest
clue what you are talking about.
