"The morning after, they should sit down with Obama for negotiations on real
tax reform as recommended by the president's own Simpson-Bowles commission:
broaden the base, lower the rates."---The Simpson-Bowles plan raises taxes
much more than anything that President Obama has proposed. As such, it is
completely and totally unacceptable to Republicans.
I saw the article heading and thought it must be from someone who doesn't
have a clue. I was right -- it came from Krauthammer, the guy who cares more
about politicial "purity" than he does about the welfare of the United
States. He proved that again through this column. He showed, again, that he
would sell the county down the river if the radical far right extremists would
gain from it. This guy is a disaster who, unfotunately, has found a place to
happen. Hopefully nobody with a scintilla of common sense pays him heed.
Another Sunday Des. News / Krauthammer exercise in dilusional behavior! The days
of calling Obama's bluff are gone. He is the POTUS and has the majority
(235-206) on his side! Aside from the pockets of Rad. Right Utah being one, the
country is swinging left/middle and the Repubs are on a rapid downhill slide.
How sweet it is to watch them scurry about trying to find a way to fix the
unfixable. Four more of Obama and eight of Hillary!
Why encourage continued obstinate behaviour in the republicans? Isn't there
a more cooperative way to approach this?
A good barometer for what NOT to do would be chuck's columns. Thanks chuck
for again, the weekly advice! Our country need to do exactly the opposite of
what you suggest
This article is correct with regards to tax increases. The president just
finished raising hundreds of billions of dollars in new tax revenue last month,
and now he wants to raise taxes again. Republicans could certainly
leave additional tax increases on the table, but first must insist on the
president agreeing to meaningful spending cuts, including entitlement spending.
Why do Democrats think that our grandchildren should pay for their
"perks"? They offer nothing to stop the "pork", but they
demand that taxes be raised. Do they really think that Americans have an extra
$1,200 per family just lying around to give to Obama? They must, because they
increased the taxes on you and me by $1,200 per year. Oh course, they
didn't call it a tax increase because Obama told us that he wouldn't
increase taxes on the average citizen. Everyone of us knows that it was a tax
increase and that Obama lied to us, but the liberals deny the facts.Obama is out of control. He has been out of control since he entered office.
He will continue to be out of control until he is sent to "time out".
Denying him EVERYTHING is the best way to help him understand that he is working
for us and that we don't have money for him to spend.
Mike, the tax increase you love to go on and on about was a temporary payroll
tax holiday that was designed to end at the end of last year; neither
Republicans nor Democrats in Congress wanted to extend it. It's no
different than a store returning to its regular prices after a Christmas sale is
over. You've been repeatedly told this on these forums and you continually
choose to ignore us. You're determined to hate President Obama no matter
what he does, so why should we take you seriously on this topic?
Charles Krauthammer's next screed will be about playing chicken on the
train tracks. He is all about calling a bluff on mutually assured destruction.
Not very smart.
@Furry1993: "... the guy who cares more about political "purity"
than he does about the welfare of the United States."The guy who
doesn't care a scintilla about this country is the guy who refuses to
knowledge our national debt is going to kill us and we must get it under
control. And who's that? It's the same guy who raised the debt by
more than almost the other presidents put together...Oh, and the
same guy who broke our national immigration laws by providing amnesty to certain
illegals... Obama. Why he has not been impeached is a total mystery.@Ralph West Jordan: "How sweet it is to watch them scurry about trying to
find a way to fix the unfixable."As soon as the Republicans get
up a little courage it will be fixed... with impeachment."Four
more of Obama and eight of Hillary!"Which means the end of
America as we know it, is near.
@KJB1: "Mike, the tax increase you love to go on and on about was a
temporary payroll tax holiday..."Perhaps Mike was referencing
the Obamacare 'penalty.' Or the now $20,000 healthcare insurance
premium that Obamacare wrought.
"Why do Democrats think that our grandchildren should pay for their
"perks"? "GOP pushed 2 unfunded wars while passing
medicare part d. Both unfunded.Yes, the dems are great at spending
and passing on the bills. Just like the GOP.Why, Mike, do you only
rail against the Democrats? Can you sincerely not see that the GOP is as guilty
(and maybe more guilty)?
Let's let Obama's own words define what is a tax increase and what is
the end of a temporary tax decrease:December 7, 2010, "President
Barack Obama sacrificed one of his top campaign promises -- raising taxes on
high earners -- in a compromise with Republicans to extend current tax rates for
everyone for another two years."December 20 2010, "He said
repeatedly during the campaign that he intended to let them expire. The tax
rates, passed during President George W. Bush's administration, were set to
go up in 2011."January 1, 2013, "Obama also said the public
supported him on raising income tax rates on high earners: " I think every
voter out there understood that that was an important debate, and the majority
of voters agreed with me. By the way, more voters agreed with me on this issue
than voted for me.”His subject was ending the Bush tax cuts.
He called it a tax increase, not the end of a temporary tax cut.He
raised the taxes on every family in America by ending a tax cut. Our taxes were
raised. He called ending the Bush cuts a raise. He raised our taxes $1,200 a
"He raised the taxes on every family in America by ending a tax cut. Our
taxes were raised."Your hatred for Obama colors everything you
write and causes you to lose sight of the truth.Obama has not raised
your taxes, nor does he have the power. That job belongs to congress.Neither party was pushing to end the tax cuts, hence the vote of congress. You can blame who you want but that does not change reality.
My understanding was that the tax increases include the following:1.
Payroll tax holiday expiration.2. Obamacare taxes (though he likes to
call them "fees")3. Increased taxes on individuals earning over
$200,000 and couples earning over $250,000 annuallyItem #3 amounts
to $600 Billion, or is it $800 Billion of new revenue.
It seems the conservative movement has learned nothing from the 2008 and 2012
elections. I will be glad when people start putting the country,
above their political party. Not what we see today from the GOP.
@JoeBlow: "Obama has not raised your taxes, nor does he have the power.
That job belongs to congress."That's right... when you get
cornered blame Congress.@Pagan: "It seems the conservative
movement has learned nothing from the 2008 and 2012 elections."They've learned from the two elections that the country is going to the
dogs... and if they wish to win an election they must be (1) in favor of
abortion, (2) in favor of gay marriage, (3) in favor of amnesty for illegal
immigrants, and (4) in favor of raising taxes. "I will be glad
when people start putting the country, above their political party."Won't we all... and that will be when the people stop electing
@Mike RichardsYou seem to completely ignore the facts that1. The
Republicans in Congress wanted the payroll tax to go back up (it's not even
a violation of the Norquist pledge).2. Mitt Romney wanted the payroll tax
to go back up.3. Obama wanted to keep the payroll tax holiday but had to
offer it up in negotiations with Republicans, especially when it became
apparently that he didn't have more than about half the Democrats with him
on keeping it.
Republican officials don't care if payroll taxes go up since payroll taxes
affect the poor more than the rich. Why do you think Jindal is proposing
lowering income taxes and increasing the sales tax (scored as cutting taxes for
the top 20% and increasing them for the bottom 80%)? Why do you think Utah is
proposing increases to the food tax? I wasn't surprised by that at all
since they don't care about taxes other than those that affect the rich
(income, capital gains, estate taxes).
I am perfectly happy with raising taxes. Shared sacrifice. But, only, if the
deficit is zero and the taxes are going to pay off the debt. Otherwise, the
taxes will go in and instead of helping future generations, the money will be
wasted in the form of payoffs to politically powerful groups like affluent
seniors rather than reducing the debt burden to future generations.Obama has gotten his symbolic tax increase. Now it is time to get down to
business and cut spending and then tax later.
I would like to comment on furry and I believe dave s comments your head is in
the sand as are all who think this pres is doing a good job. campaigner in chief
is still aboard spreading the stories of how is being thwarted at every turn
while bankrupting our country. Charles K is the one bright spot in someone whose
willing to call things as they are. Charles is someone like Tom Sowell who has
again and again brought up what is happening to the Blacks and the poor in this
country the complete trying to get everyone on the government dole. one last
remark hows that Obama care working out?? all of you who thought this was such a
grand idea, wait till your jobs are cut to under 40 hours cause of insurance
cost then you can really be thankful for your leader. Oh and gun control hm fast
and furious lets see hm our gov put guns into the hands of drug runners let me
see, how did that work out besides the killing of a border agent. and our
attorney gen mr holder I have no recollection of that.
DavidCenterville,You forgot the raise on capital gains, which
is a tax on retirement for all of us who are trying to save for ours, because
social security will be bankrupt and gone when we retire.Seems to me
that 'shared sacrifice' would mean current retirees also should have
their benefits capped or trimmed. My future retirement income was just reduced.
I am paying theirs, mine, and then I am paying for the massive welfare rolls
too. I am going broke here, just like our country.I hope we
don't end up abandoning our retirees, but at the current rate, we will have
to. We need to have massive economic growth, and make welfare and unemployment
back into workfare and jobs if we are to be prosperous enough to take care of
our elders. This president either doesn't know how to make this happen, or
doesn't care about our country at all.Spending cuts are the
first step to solvency. We better do it before it is too late.
"That's right... when you get cornered blame Congress."So, do you not like congress getting the blame or are you refuting my
statement?I do blame congress. We hear how Obama did this and that,
but in the end, it is congress that must vote. And neither party was
big on extending the payroll tax cuts
Last time Harry Reid refused to allow the House bill to the floor for debate,
and BO refused to sign anything that wasn't a tax increase and anything
that cut spending. Those 2 get the blame for last time. This time it
is the cuts that are set to take place. Either find better cuts or take the ones
we have. If they compromise short of spending cuts, it will be
The author, as he does on Fox continues to incite with his writing. He writes of tax reform of being revenue neutral, and the purpose of that
would be????Pres Obama is not the only one who knew the country
could not afford the tax cuts instituted by Pres Bush. The 1.3 trillion in
revenue it cost USA (really the country could not afford) is now seen as an
entitlement by those unable to see that money was not theirs.Pres
Bush gave the money to the masses in a tax break rather than actually fund the
debts the country had already incurred. He could have used it to partially fund
medicare or social security or his entire worthless department of education but
instead of paying the mortgage payment he took his kids skiing (or in other
words gave each person a popular tax break) the country could in no way
afford. Those who struggle with math concepts or who buy lottery
tickets hoping for some grocery money might not understand that concept. Now the country cannot afford the military, post office or medical
system. What is to be done?taking the kids skiing won't
