Starting with Goldwater's southern strategy in 1964 and continuing through
Nixon, Reagan, Lee Atwater, and Karl Rove, the GOP has made alienation of racial
and ethnic minorities and women and appealing to white southern males a
cornerstone of their strategy. It will take more than window dressing and a
softened stance on immigration reform to overcome half a century of neglect.
Also, it appears that Cuban exiles, the one reliable sector of the Latino
community for the GOP over the years, are ditching their support as the original
expats die and their descendants become increasingly distanced from Cuba. While there are many parts of the GOP platform that should be attractive
to Latinos (predominantly Roman Catholic, family-oriented, entrepreneurial), the
GOP has done a remarkably good job of pushing them away. What percentage of the
Minute Man Project roaming the border was Republican? The GOP will need to make
real changes if they want to attract the Latino vote. People can see through
pandering and tokenism.
“The way for the party to grow again is to elect more women and Hispanics
at the local level. We need to make sure those elected officials look like the
community they represent.”New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez=========== No -- “The way for the party to grow
again is to STOP...trash talking the enitre Hispanic community, stripping away Women's Rights, labeling Hispanic children as
"anchor babies",saying America is only a "Christian"
nation, labeling anyone from the Middle East as a terrorist, pulling the rug out from under the education of the youth, telling the
LGBT community that they are not equal citizens, saying you want peace,
and start wars, financailly ruining the Elderly, pulling access to
Healthcare for those with pre-existing conditions, and saying 47% of
America don't pay ANY taxes...I'm sure there's other
minorities groups I've missed, but that just a random example.Nominating someone who isn't a Flip-Flopper would help as well.
A bidding war over entitlements would be foolish.A bidding war over
amnesty would be worse. But the old guard GOP plods ahead playing the game
of identity politics. Our own party members are already confused. The
candidates ignore the platform and wonder why we stay home.To be sure, we
can never entice the liberals. They are the consummate narcissistic voters. And moderates, the unaffiliated, can see right through this shallow rebranding
effort. No, the GOP needs to stand for something. And this is not the
Pretty soon Hannity and Rush will be the only unrepresented minority.
Someone punches you in the gut, so youenergetically rise up and to support
theircomponent. Someone seeing what adifference you can make, they
decidethey want to be your friend. Youbrush aside the probability
theirfriendship is feigned and that yourand their interests
don't align and a newfriendship is born.
Hispanics were mistreated in this election, by therank and file and the
candidates. By next election theirproportion of the population will be
greater than it wasthis election. Elections in the future will most
likely ebband flow between Democratic and RepublicanCandidates, but
it will get more difficult, not less forRepublicans to win unless they see
the facts on theground and act accordingly.
Why not go ahead and turn the governing of the country over to Mexico? Our
leaders seem more interested in Mexico's constituency than U.S. Citizens.
So, go ahead and let Mexico run everything. I'm sure we'll have Utopia
in no time.
