Guns 'will increase our ability to respond quickly,' officer says
I'm sure whomever brings guns to school like in Sandyhook will use the
gunsafe.Ft. Hood. Gabriel Giffords.Columbine.More guns, is not the solutions to guns.
"Marchand said schools have hallways that are 50 to 100 yards long."
And when those hallways are full of children, someone at the other end with a
rifle isn't going to be able to do a thing. I'm sorry, but turning our
schools into armed fortresses isn't going to do a thing about the root
causes of the problem. It'll only inculcate our children with a sense of
fear, a feeling that living in America is extremely dangerous and that no one
can be trusted. Will the next step be armored school buses and fortified
shopping malls? There are already companies marketing body armor and armored
backpacks for children. Shall we follow up with ten-foot steel and concrete
walls around our homes and yards, with metal detectors at the gates? It all
brings to mind the broken-down America of Heinlein's novel "I Will Fear
No Evil", with its secure enclaves and abandoned areas throughout the
cities. This isn't where we ought to be heading.
Strangely there is never any talk about locking the door or a strong door that
can't be broken into like Sandyhook's entrance. If the door had been
better the kids would be alive yet I haven't heard a peep about better
doors. It's just the pro-gun, anti-gun crowds shouting about guns. Have a hammer, all the world a nail.
One more suggestion of a non-solution.
@ Switchero- The Newtown school had installed strong doors and locks and the
crazy killer shot his way in anyway. The only thing that stops a
bad buy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. The Idaho resource
officers with a handgun are a good start. A better tool, however, is the Utah
approach where teachers who have concealed carry permits can carry in schools-
and no one knows who they are. Keep the bad guy(s) guessing.A
better idea is to remove the silly and proven ineffective "gun free school
zone" law that disarms the good guys. The bad guys just ignore this law
This is a great idea! I know that some of the smaller districts along the
Wasatch back have discussed this as well. Keeping guns locked in a safe is very
prudent. Having them at the ready for those trained to use them in case
something happens is a good safety measure. Response times for police can't
always be quick enough and having some good guys with guns to stop the bad guys
with guns would be better than just allowing the shooter free reign.I think the fundamental problem with all you anti-gun people is you believe
that we can truly rid the country of guns. Do you honestly believe that
criminals will turn their guns in at a gun swap? No, no, no! They won't. So
a society where the bad guys and government has all the weapons is not safe at
all! Get to the root of the problem, mental health, bullying, violent movies and
video games, before just saying it's the gun that's the problem. 99.9%
of guns in this country do no harm. Figure it out please!
DN subscriber 2, the door wasn't all that strong if he shot his way through
it.To guarantee to stop one heavily armed person with a gun and body
armor, you will need several people with body armor and more powerfull guns. I
hope there's no kids around, in the school... Or a really good
doors could do the job and the police can handle it outside the school.
