From the article Te'o says: "This girl, who I committed myself to..."
    Huh?

As long as he lied only briefly...

OK, this should now close the door on this whole bizarre story. Please media, let us now move away from this and start beating on the lies about fracking.

Ok, so Lance Armstrong lied about doping.

    Why is this different?

Interesting how the liberal media has focused endlessly on this (non)story, as opposed to their disinterest in the lies Hilary Clinton, etal told about the Benghazi four dead American massacre.

Armstrong: Knowingly cheated repeatedly over decades/cancer survivor abuses his body to win/ Does not admit to feeling shame/ made millions misleading and lying/

Te'o: A victim of a hoax/naive young man becomes emotionally attached to a woman he talks with over the phone, texts and e-mails/ Comes clean and admits he was victim of hoax/ Embarrassed, feels shame/ has yet to make any money as an athlete

    Do you see the difference?

    @Pagan, @Richard Larson

Oh please. Lance Armstrong's lies earned him several Tour de France titles, TONS of money and endorsements, fame, and even an Olympic medal. Te'o's lies earned him a little extra attention by the national media. No comparison.

Not saying what he did was right, but there's no comparison to Lance Armstrong. What did Te'o have to gain from lying about having a girlfriend who died from leukemia?

What Lance Armstrong lied about (taking PED's) is illegal.
What Manti Teo lied about (having a fake girlfriend) is not.

Wow, the responses here would raise my pioneer grandparents to issue a well-deserved lecture: You don't compare your wrong-doing to a greater sinner. You confess and refuse to justify your wrong. Period.

"The dog ate my homework" is a lie; "I watched Letterman too late" is an inexcusable but truthful excuse. "Yeah, but Ronda (my cousin) has been copying my homework all month" didn't get me out of hot water either. Both of my parents were teachers, and thank goodness we learned early on that the same rules applied to everyone. When I was sent to the principal in the 7th grade I didn't expect any special treatment. I dreaded going home a lot more: my dad WAS that principal. Always kind, loving and fair, I hated having let him down. Trust me- I never embarrassed our family name again.

Hillary never backed off blaming that "Right Wing Conspiracy", Bill never apologized until caught. First time admissions are always best for everyone concerned. Teach your kids the "right" and there will be no shame in an honest confession.

It seems that a lot of those commenting have never told a fib to avoid embarrassment when they find they've done something like this...That's all this is, you know.

He didn't gyp anyone out of money, or get financial gain, or cause harm to anyone else by his actions. He was just doing what many of us do: try to keep ourselves from embarrassment.

If Manti were the kid down the block who got hoaxed, we'd just have a good laugh and forget it; but many like to make themselves feel important by judging those in the limelight.

Wow, if only I could get away with the analogy that's out on the blogs and webworld about fake girlfriends and Lamanite DNA...

Get grounded in reality and truth, then your gray shades will get starkly black/white, Lance's sins notwithstanding. Asking Katie, "What would you do?", only compounded his naiveté into downright stupidity and compliance. But hey- When your own father justifies your knowingly perpetuating the discover sham, what's a poor lad to do?

I mean, Hitler was a really bad guy, too.

WWJSD? Joseph Smith would have told Manti to come clean, even if it took him 5 different versions and 20 years with no church publications mention.

Perserverance is the key. Cut the little liar some slack! After all, he hasn't duped the doping squad for years...

What are you drinking in Pocatello, combblai? Then our Lord told the woman to "go and sin no more". (John 8:11)

Religious folks know that God accepts confessions: David was forgiven, although he suffered the consequences his entire life. Saul's excuses did not bring him absolution; God knew his heart.

The actual commentary on their lying is that Armstrong said he didn't feel guilty at the time, and ditto Te'o: "What would you do, Katie?!"

  • DUPDaze Bakersfield, CA
    Jan. 23, 2013 6:01 p.m.

So Joseph Smith denied practicing polygamy when he in fact was. According to Church History, the Joseph Smith papers, and his friends at the Nauvoo Expositor.

How would he have answered Katie?

Christ died for sinners, Lance, Te'o and all. But He never justified the continuation of lying. He listed liars (unconfessed/unrepentant) as ending up in eternal damnation along with others. (Revelation 22). I'd make sure I knew the difference before leaving this life.

You don't have to agree, but you can't rewrite Christ's Words. Te'o needs to spend more time in his Bible and less on Facebook anc Katie's chair.

I think people on this thread should spend less time judging so that they are not judged with the same judgement with which they are judging Te'o . . .

Wow! I can't believe how harsh people are towards Te'o.

Having read about every story that has been published on this, it is apparent to me that Te'o was not in on this hoax.

Sure, he didn't come forward and tell the media that he has an online/phone girlfriend whom he had never met. (How many people would do that, though?)
He also didn't come forward just before the Heisman and tell the world that he had been tricked and the girlfriend wasn't real. (Bringing on yourself public humiliation takes a lot of courage.)

When it comes to gullibility ask yourself this:

Have you ever forward on an email/message that promised you a free IPad, a gift certificate, or money for forwarding a message to 5 of your friends?

When it comes to absolute complete honesty at all times:

Do you have any mp3s that you didn't pay for? (Burned a friend's CD, library CD, downloaded music online?)

I'm not justifying what Te'o did. I just understand what he did and why.

We shouldn't be casting stones at this guy.

I only lied "briefly" misses the point that a lie is a lie is a lie and the consequences can magnify, creating the need for still more lies. With politicians a lie is never a lie, but called spin or some other sanitized term.

I am beginning to understand after reading some of the posts here.
It is OK to briefly speed and the trooper should let you off the hook.
Sort of like briefly breaking immigration laws or briefly using a fake ID to get work.
We should wink and nod at such things. And we are not really responsible for these brief lapses in integrity.
This kinder, gentler Mormonism is a departure from the Gospel of high standards that I was drawn to thirty years ago.

    Here is the wrapup

Te'o was duped. Regardless of how naive one may think he is, he was taken in hook, line and sinker.

It was not until Dec 6 that he became complicit. Had he told the truth beginning on Dec 6 he would have been totally in the clear (naive, but in the clear)

He decided to lie. But, one can understand a bit as to why he did it. Probably embarrassment mostly. Not an excuse, but understandable.

Give the kid a break. He has been punished, I assure you.

    Time to move along.

  • OnlytheCross Bakersfield, CA

MHCF: If Manti is a follower of Jesus, he should have told the truth upon his learning of the deception. If he's not a covenant-bound person, no one can make that judgment....

But the media, social and ethical, can add dishonest to naive in his public resumé. Then the sports endorsement gods will make their financial decisions, sans any Papal bull or SLC reprimand.

See how easy black and white is?

How is this different than Armstrong lying? Well, Armstrong knowingly lied about something that gave him a physical advantage over his competitors. Teo lied about something from his personal life that he had believed to be true for months and suddenly found out was a hoax. Of course its not ok to lie ever but that doesn't make every situtation the exact same. And I'm sorry but I sincerely doubt that any of you critics haven't ever told a worse lie in your life.

  • RedWings CLEARFIELD, UT

Pagan - I agree with you....

A lie is a lie, whether it is a momentary slip or a multi-year deception.

The difference is not in the action, but in the response of the person. Someone who openly admita their mistake, is contrite and humble, and works hard to not commit the wrong again is in a much better position than someone who admits only after being caught. Also, feeling bad because one committed the wrong-doing is better than only being sorry for getting caught.

There is danger in minimizing the action for these reasons, but there is every reason to commend someone who takes accountability, reconciles with those he or she wronged, and works to repair the damaged that was caused. This is a rare evetn in today's world....

Honestly, I don't understand why this is such a big story. It's weird, sure, but he was lying about having a girlfriend!? What guy hasn't bent the truth when it comes to the ladies?
