    Many Germans found Kennedy's statement, "Ich bin ein Berliner," rather humorous, because what he said means "I am a jelly-filled donut." A Berliner is a pastry. If he had wanted to say, "I am a Berliner," meaning a citizen of Berlin, he should have said, "Ich bin Berliner." A German cartoon in the following decade, when Jimmy Carter visited Frankfurt, spoofed Kennedy's statement by having Carter say, "Ich bin ein Frankfurter."
