Considering that all state employees are similarly poorly paid compared to
contemporaries in other states, I would much rather see them get the pay raise
than our 6-figure earning top elected officials. Herbert gets free housing (a
mansion) and a car during his term, perks other state employees who aren't
already independently wealthy from their real estate businesses couldn't
even dream of. Ever see what kind of pitiful salary a social worker
who works with neglected/abused children makes in this state? Look it up and
then decide for yourself if Governor Herbert needs to be shoveled $150K per
This seems like a well reasoned editorial. Utah's governor doesn't
need to be among the top 10 paid in the US.This increase is also
difficult to swallow given the low salaries of other state employees.
Come again. What on earth does the headline on the opinion page mean?
They choose to run for office. Why do they need a pay raise? They can quit any
time they want. No pay raise for anyone. It's not like the Gov is John
They can easily do anything they like with no fear of reprisal. One party
government perpetually elected by Utahns has not checks and no balance. The pay
raise recommendation is due to the compensation committee comprised of powerful
lobbysts. We get the kind of government the lobbysts pay for.
I appreciate our Governor, but ... He gets a free house and already makes quite
a bit of money. In this country we have the mistaken notion that those at the
top merit or deserve . . .WAY . . . more than the average person. This simply
isn't so. To justify this, committees who decide such things point to other
similar organizations. Well did it occur to these committees that other similar
organizations might be wrong? In private industry, CEO's take
(notice I didn't say make) 500 times what their average workers make. This
is wrong.Look to the federal government as a righteous model. The
president of the United States makes only $400,000 a year in salary. Generals of
the United States military make typically $160,000 in salary. This is a better
model than looking at private industry which has gotten out of control, or even
looking at other states which probably do take some of their guidance from
State of Utah employees are dead last, yes, 50 of 50 of employees with
comparable pay in other states and have received one pay raise in the last 5
years. What a crock! No pay raises until you take care of your own.
Let that free market decide. Laughing. Politicians are quitting because the pay
is too low?Sense of entitlement anyone? Half price.
Let Herbert resign and work private sector, if he thinks $110,000 plus housing,
etc. is too low. He's a realtor, he could easily get a job on some board
of directors or something like that.
See how they are creating a false argument? It's no longer if the get a pay
raise but how quickly. Did the voters vote them a pay raise?
Give ordinary state workers a raise first and then we'll talk about giving
you these ridiculous raises. Amazing how a bunch of people who absolutely hate
the government with all their hearts are the first in line to demand more from
said evil government. Pack of moochers one and all.
No pay raise. To do so is bad timing if nothing else. The economy is still
struggling in my opinion. Legislators tend to treat themselves very
well. Several years ago they spent $30 Million to give themselves a
new parking garage. Now they want a pay raise.Yet state employees
and education remain poorly funded. How about if legislator &
governor pay increases are tied to them finding a way to fund education so we
aren't at or near the bottom of the barrel any longer.
NO elected official should ever get a pay raise they vote on. They knew the pay
when they ran for office. The only elected officials who should get pay raises
are new officeholders - from a pay raise voted on by the old hands. NO
elected official should get retirement pay for their elected office. If they
want retirement pay - get a real job.
Now why in the world didn't the commission include all state workers in
Does anyone remember the Republican hysteria over entitlements? Are
these politicians feeling as if they are somehow entitled?
Leaders should lead by example -- Not do as I say, not as i do.BTW - Utah's #1 problem right now is underfunded EDUCATION, not undunded Governor's salaries.
To "Open Minded Mormon" education is funded more than adequately. If
you bothered to do some research, over the past 30 years funding for education
has doubled (accounting for inflation), yet testing shows no improvement. You also forget that less than 60% of the funding actually makes it to
the classroom. How about we get more of the funding to the classroom
before we start to increase funding
We have a spending problem.Unless, of course, you are a Republican
waiting for a handout from taxpayers.
To "There You Go Again" you forgot that Democrats seeking re-election
also have no problems with more spending.
Why are you defending the Governor's pay raise of 36% RedShirt?Your motto of "cut of ALL Government spending" lacks integrity.and is disingenous to all your core beliefs.Be honest with
youself, before projecting and expecting it of others.
To "LDS Liberal" what are you talking about? Please tell me when I ever
said that the Governor or any other politician should get a 36% pay raise.Be honest. You don't like me becaue I constantly prove you wrong,
and that irritates you more than sand in your pants.
Red, there has never been a time -- never -- when you have managed to PROVE
anyone wrong with any of your posts.
It would be nice if some posters would take time to do some research, (but I
know they won't) they would learn that Democratic Congresses and Presidents
have actually spent less than Republicans for a long, long time. It goes back as
far as Nixon.Let's see, how many times did Reagan increase the
debt limit and what was the total cost of all his new spending measures?Ditto for Bush I and II.In fact, MOST of the spending that
is now being blamed on Obama is a result of previous Republican Presidents and
Congresses. They need to read "Who Stole the American Dream"
to learn how the GOP has contributed to the origins of today's fiscal
problems.But they won't.Because they delude
thenselves into thinking that they already know. But one person's version
of the truth isn't necessarily TRUTH.Opinions do not PROVE
anything. Except maybe that they listen to too much hate radio.
During the recession, many state government workers have been laid off or their
agencies reduced in size through attrition. Before any governmental leaders get
pay raises, we should hire back the teachers who lost jobs, along with all the
other government workers who lost jobs. Inflation has been negligible for
years, and the cost of living in Utah is no where near what it is in many other
To "one old man" just because you and your ilk refuse to accept the
truth does not mean that you have not been proven wrong. If
Obama's spending is all the fault of the previous administration, explain
why it is that all of Bush's spending was his fault. You are being a
hypocrite. How do you know that Bush's spending wasn't a result of
the recession that Clinton left him? How far back do you want to go blaming
others for your guy's mistakes? The truth of the matter is
simple. If Obama wanted to cut spending he could. He said that the Bush
spending levels were unpatriotic, yet he has out spent Bush every year.If you say that Obama's spending is good, then Bush's spending must
have also been good because they spent money on the same things.
