Legislators are understandably desperate. I hope this is will curtail gun
violence, but the defense bar will find a way to get criminals off the hook or
the courts will not impose penalties. The discrepancy in DUI laws between the US
and Europe have the same problem, good laws but poorly enforced in the US. Just
listen to the radio advertisements for DWI attorneys. The one law which cannot
be avoided is the law of unintended consequences.
Finally the U.S. Supreme Court landmark decision District or Columbia V. Heller
is getting the fine tuning necessary to put this decision into practical
reality, but we're not quite there yet. When all is said and then there
will a new balance of gun limitations and controls that will balance the need
for public safety and the right to bear arms. BOTH extreme sides to this issue
will be eventually sorely disappointment nevertheless.
