Just as Bronco learned that QB's are important in the game of football, Rose is now learning that shooters are helpful in this game of basketball.

I think we all knew byu was bad.

    But this bad?

    Game over Utes win!

Just as we ended your season in football very early on,

I'd say a 5-4 start for a team in the "other conferences" category essentially ends this season too!

BYU pulls close. Gets a turn over, Carlino passes to a wide open Austin under the basket...who hesitates and lets a Ute knock the ball away.

Another turnover, Carlino forces a pass for a turnover.

Down two with a chance to tie, they launch some ill-advised threes. Davies gets two offensive boards, then forces a bad shot. doesn't get it. Does something stupid and gets T'd up.

Sharp gets fouled on a rebound. Misses both free throws.

4-22 on threes at one point in the 2nd half...but they keep launching them.

The Cougars are losing because they are not playing smart basketball.

Chris B... Just because your team is much improved doesn't give you license to come to the basketball pages and troll us... Take your 5-7 football season and 3 point loss for what the 7th time in a row and stick to your own boards enjoying your big dose of CROW pie!

Smarter basketball leads to the win. 4-22 from three at one point in the 2nd half. They finished 7-26 after making 3 of their last 4. They were much smarter shots, coming with wide open looks after working the ball inside-out.

Give credit to Utah for stifling Haws most of the game. They played great defense in the first half. But BYU figured them out and finally got their heads in it.

Chris B., I'll give you credit for knowing how bad of a shooting team BYU is. However, as you may have noticed the game is 40 minutes. BYU is not good but they can still beat Utah when they shoot 31 percent from the field and 69 from the line. BYU was also out coached tonight. They better figure something out soon or they will not even finish in the top half of the WCC.

Can you please direct me to where I find information on the 'other conferences'? Is this just a modified attempt to pretend that the BCS is all that in basketball too? Well, it isn't because the rolls reverse and the Big East is typically a pretty strong basketball conference. Stronger than the Pac stronger than the 12, stronger than the 10, stronger than the SEC, stronger than all other than perhaps the ACC. But those are your top two. So, just take your crow pie and enjoy the final adaptation to reality that there is no such thing as 'other conferences' in basketball.

I cannot believe Utah has turned things around so quickly...or BYU isn't so good?

We have to be ahead of schedule, to Coach KO's plan!!! 10 new players, playing away, in a hostile house...unbelievable...

Utah's staff is amazing...we should beat Washington, WAZZU, USC, Colorado, OR ST, and one of the Bay Area school at home... Pick up a few on the road and win 14 games this year!!!

chris b comes through for the cougs again. Thank you chris, U are the best prediction of Cougar success. As soon as I saw your post prophesying a Ute win, I knew the Cougs would crawl back in it, and they did. I'll keep marking it down! Lol

This is the weakest BYU team in six or seven years. Utes figured out how to contain Davies and Haws, and without these two the Cougs are average at best.

I give the Utes a lot of credit. I didn't think they would improve this much, this fast. U still have a lot to work on on the offensive side, but your defense was outstanding.

They are definitely improving and I really couldn't be happier with the job that Coach K is doing up on the hill. Tough loss for the Utes but give the Cougars credit they really fought back and won the game. Great game all around. Looking forward to next week!!! Good luck on your future schedule BYU.

BYU played their worst game of the year and still won! The basketball IQ on this team is breathtakingly low, Cusick thinks he is a play maker, Austin cannot finish around the rim and Zylstra was chucking up 3's like the ball is on fire. This team is maddening to watch, and YET, they still beat Utah who played out of their minds.

Credit byu for doing what utah couldn't do in the final stretch: make key shots. A coug fan mentioned it, and I agree with him that Larry outcoached rose, but the coaches don't handle the ball, and byu is a little better in overall roster talent and experience. Good game, no "beating ourselves" excuses. Good job, cougars, and can you finally admit Utes basketball is coming back?

With more experience/seasoning, Bachynski is going to be a good one. Same with Loveridge. Whether BYU isn't good as usual, or whether Utah is better than most thought isn't relevant to me. It was just good to watch a competitive basketball game between the two programs again. The players enjoyed it, too. The passion on both sides was evident. Here's to hoping this is a sign the Utes are on the rise.

How could Rose let Bachynski and Harrison get away? Bachynski wanted to come to BYU, and Rose didn't offer. Sharp is improving at the 4, but thinking about Bachynski at the 5 and Davies at the 4 would have been a terrific duo.

And we really need someone like Harrison - great defense, slashing to the basket. He would have taken a lot of pressure off Haws.

Two missed opportunities, thinking about what could've been. I try to stay true blue, but I'm struggling with what someone saw in offering scholarships a couple of this years recruits over Bachynski and Harrison.

Ah well, next years recruiting class is top notch.

    Chris B

The Utes are vastly improved; but unfortunately for U, even with a great game by the Utes and a sub-par performance by the Cougars, BYU was still good enough to pull out another win - 61-58!

    BYU owns U in basketball!

    11 of the last 12

    129-125 overall

It is nice to see the Utes improving; they won't be such a drag on BYU's RPI from now on.

  • StGtoSLC SALT LAKE CITY, UT
    Dec. 8, 2012 9:58 p.m.

Scandrus, the Utes did NOT play out of their minds. Wednesday night vs Boise was playing out of their minds, tonight was playing tough, but with too much nerves when we needed a big shot. It also didn't help that our leading rebounder was beat on the boards all night. But just like a great workout tears muscle fibers to build them back bigger and stronger, once the team recovers from the loss, it will have built them up more. Congrats on the win and good luck on the season, the wcc is week enough you likely won't need it aside from gonzaga (who were nearly beat by Wazzu).

  • CougFaninTX Frisco, TX
    Dec. 8, 2012 10:00 p.m.

StGtoSLC - "cougars, and can you finally admit Utes basketball is coming back?"

Conditional yes - the Utes are definitely better than last year's team. I predicted about a 10 win season, but after seeing U play tonight, I'll raise that to about 14. Probably still below 500 with a very easy non-conference schedule.

The key will be next year. Will Utah unexpectedly lose top talent after the season? If not, Bachynski and Loveridge are two solid players to build a team around for the next few years. If they stick around, and U pick up a couple more good recruits, U should improve again next year.

But BYU's recruiting for the next two years is the best in the Dave Rose era. This could be the weakest BYU team for the next 6 or 7 years.

Phew that was close. This was a game that the Y needed. Now, if Carlino can continue to make improvements. If Carlino, Haws and Davies can get it going at the same time, the Cougs may make some noise. It'll be interesting to see how good both of these teams (BYU and Utah) really are. Give it a month and we should have a pretty good idea. As far as the comment of Dave Rose getting out-coached. I'm not sure how you get out-coached and win the game.

You have to be a complete Ute homer to believe the referees favored the Cougs down the stretch. I will grant you that the refs had as bad of a night as the two teams, but the calls down the stretch were anything BUT in the Cougs favor. Yes, a couple of bad calls went the Cougs way. Davies and Haws were mugged by Utah players all night; Haws, in particular, was taken down TWICE just within the first couple of minutes of the game, and was constantly being held and shoved throughout the game with not a single call from the officials.

Bottom line: the better team one, despite the poor officiating.

I do think it's interesting how many Utes think their team is back after an unexpected win over Boise State (a teamm that will finish in the middle of the MWC) and a close lose (moral victory) to the Cougars. During the Boylen era, a season wit less than 20 wins was a disappointment. Now five wins over patsies, one unexpected win and a close loss mean the Utes are back? When you get invited to the dance, you will be back. Until then, U should stick with improving.

But again, better than I thought . . . if that makes U feel better.

And for the commenters who continue to talk about PAC12 greatness and ride the conference coat tails - Colorado got KOed by Kansas, Washington losses to a middling MWC Nevada team, and USC gets thumped by Minnesota. Looks like PAC12 is having "another" down year.

"...can you finally admit that Ute basketball is coming back?"

If by "coming back" you mean "improved", then I can buy that.

That said, any Utah fan who thinks that a team that is still losing home games to Sacramento State is "back", is obviously setting the "back" bar pretty low.

It's fine for Utah fans to get excited about the closeness of this game, but lets not forget that not too long ago, it wasn't uncommon for the decided underdog in a particular year to keep the game close or even pull an occasional upset.

CougFaninTX, if you're referring to me, you might notice I never said "the Utes are back," but are coming back. No team coming off a losing record with 10 or more new players is going to be "back" after one or two decent games.

SSmith, you hold a loose interpretation of giddiness. I for one am not pleased with having given up a 12 point lead, albeit to a pretty good team in a very loud environment. But judging the defense the team played and, at times, ability to find and make good shots, there's plenty reason for optimism.

Cougies had worst game in years and utes played great, really? Don't know what game you were watching but the utes didn't play great. Had they played great they win that game by 30! They didn't shoot it well and turned the ball over too much. They lost to a bad team on the road in a game they should have easily won.

For those of you commenting on the refs. Re-watch the game 10 of the worst calls I have ever seen go the cougies way.

@just the fax...To say Haws didn't get any calls is the most laughable thing I have read in months on these boards. You would have thought it was Kobe out there get within in 3 inches of the guy and he went too the line. The Utes completley shut him down and if it wasn't for several gift calls the guy probably has 3-5 points on the night. We lose by 3 so you do the math. Late in 2nd utes up 3 ball out of bounds clearly off BYU ball given to BYU. Up 4 we get put back foul called on washburn for standing there lol!

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    Dec. 9, 2012 9:25 a.m.

I went to the game and I was pretty disappointed with the way BYU played. I'll give utah some credit as I thought they played good defense, although they were definately allowed to get away with an absolute mugging of Haws which was ridiculous, but the story here is much more how bad BYU is playing. There is really no excuse for this not being a 15 point+ blowout. BYU needs to get it straightened out soon and hopefully Carlino's game is a start. It does say something about BYU that they could play so poorly and still manage to win but any praise there is tempered by the quality of the team they were playing. utah still appeared to me to be lacking in talent, especially offensively, and are one of those teams that tries to stay in games by playing good defense, and hoping to get away with a lot of physical stuff, and keeping scores low. Not particularly fun to watch. It was really a black mark on BYU that they allowed that sort of tactic to work.

Duckhunter, when they start calling Haws for a push off on every single one of his shots with a man guarding him, I would be fine with them calling fouls for your interpretation of "mugging." That "physical stuff" is called playing defense, this is a basketball game, not a tickle fight.

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    Dec. 9, 2012 5:35 p.m.

    @stg

You would not be making the same assertion if this was the opposite. Bad teams that have to play that way to be in games always make that same claim. I was not impressed with utah, I was extremely disappointed in BYU for allowing thate sort of stuff to affect them in the manner that it did. I like physical basketball but that doesn't change the fact that all it was on utah's part was a tactic to try and offset a talent deficiency. It almost worked but the better team still won. Congratulations on the moral victory.

  • StGtoSLC SALT LAKE CITY, UT
    Dec. 9, 2012 9:26 p.m.

Duckhunter, you certainly seem to know what assertions I would make, don't you? I can admit when a team flat out comes to play stronger than my team, it happened A LOT last year, and happened over the last seven minutes of the game last night, I'm not the one being a baby about that. Are you disappointed in BYU that it affected them, or are you more disappointed that BYU was just exposed as being largely a two man show with Haws and Davies? It's not any different than what they've been all season, it was just put on display when those two had trouble getting into the action. Yes, there is a large talent discrepancy between those two and all healthy players on Utah's roster, but after that, the teams proved to be pretty even, dare I say with the edge going to Utah. I'm going to be you for a second and make the assertion that that's what you're actually disappointed in.

"Mugging of Davis and Haws" seems to be the theme from BYU fans.

A sure tell sign that Utah is headed in the right direction is when your rival complains you played "too physical" with them, on their home court no less.

Cheer up BYU fans, your team won.

The team picked to finish last in the PAC-12 owned BYU for most of the game on the road. The only reason we lost was because our young guys missed 8 straight shots down the stretch. Mark it down as "nerves" for young, new players still learning to play as a team.

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    Dec. 10, 2012 10:01 a.m.

    @stg

Well it didn't appear to me that utah had any answer for Carlino. And no these teams are not close in talent outside of Haws and Davies, BYU is still vastly superior. My frustration is that BYU allowed the thuggish play of utah to affect them in the manner that it did. Ultimately superior talent won out but to be a really good team BYU needs to respond more quickly when bad teams attempt to use physical and slowdown tactics to throw them off of their game.

    @uteology

utah didn't "own" anything. BYU just played badly. What should frustrate you is that BYU only needed 7 minutes of mediocre play, instead of the terrible way they played up to that point, to beat utah. utah played as good as they possibly could play, and still lost. As far as your "young guys" missing shots is concerned, well I'm pretty sure dubois is a sr. and he was the one missing all of the shots.

Regardless it was still 7 wins in a row and 11 out of the last 12. I think it is something like 14 out of 16 as well. Dominance.

You should just be content with your moral victory. You know how this proves utah has "improved" and how there is no gap in talent other than Davies and Haws. Pretty amazing to me how a loss can get a group of "fans" so excited. I understand this is the 1st time in a loooooong time utah has even gotten this game much closer than a 20 point final margin but last time I checked it is still another loss, 7 in a row and 11 out of 12.

I will never understand why BYU fans are incapable of giving credit where credit is due. It's always we played bad, or the officials were biased, or it was a fluke, or "we gave the game away."

Here are facts from the game:

Utah is still less talented, but is clearly closing the gap. Especially with the bigs.

Both teams have solid coaches. Coach K had a better plan coming into the game, but Rose made the right adjustments in the second half.

Neither team played particularly well. It was hard fought, physical, and emotional. Exactly what a rivalry game should be.

Utah went ice cold and BYU got hot when it mattered most.

Hopefully the Utes will get some revenge next year.

Wooooowww. I have to say I am impressed by these Runnin' Utes. But....as usual....BYU pulled it out....

    @two for flinching

"Utah is still less talented, but is clearly closing the gap."

It would be almost impossible to not close the gap, that is how wide it has been. That said I do think utah has improved but still do not think they are even in the same stratosphere as BYU despite the close game Saturday. I do believe it was much more BYU struggling than utah "closing the gap". BYU has some problems this year they need to resolve and I think that they will. But just like in football teams are judged based on the entire season not just by how they played one single game. For utah it is hard to say what they are because outside of BYU they haven't played a good team yet. I think we'll know better once they are into their conference season and their joke of a pre season schedule is finished.

For BYU their conference schedule will tell us about them as well. Honestly it might be another 6 years before utah beats BYU.

How about we use the alltime basketball record. BYU leads it.

Just as we ended your season in football very early on"

Lost or confused much? Utah's football season is over. BYU's is not.

Losing Rogers and Collingsworth (both of whom would likely be starting) and Harrison is really going to hurt. Starting Sharp allows teams to double team Davies as Sharp is not an offensive threat. Zylstra is a liability unless he's shooting well and that rarely happens, allowing teams to double team Haws off Zylstra. Bottom line, the talent level is as low as it's been in five years.

Since Y defenders have trouble staying in front of anyone, they'll have to rely on playing zone for the most part and hope teams don't shoot well. And they can't break down teams off the dribble so will have trouble scoring when they don't shoot well from distance.

I don't think they'll win the conference and it will be a real struggle to get in the tournament.

    Crissy B,
I know you like the attention. Must be dark and lonely in your mom's basement. This was clearly the worst game (hands down) of the season for BYU and some how they still beqt Utah. What does that say about the Utes. It will be a long season for Utah. At least they can watch their bowl game as a consolation....Oh wait, Sorry
