Wonderful article. We often hear about strife in the Middle East, but distance ourselves here on the other side of the world. Reading this personal experience makes it all real: he could be our brother, son, husband, friend. We are so lucky to not have air raids as a part of our daily lives. I hope we can feel sympathy and then take action to help create peace in this world. Beautiful writing. Thank you.

Mr Paxton is lucky not to have been on the receiving end of military terror in Gaza, where drones and advanced plane strikes numbering in the thousands have taken place, not a few light shows in the sky, and where dozens of children and non-combatants have (again) paid the price for Israeli occupation. I hope his peace and Arabic language studies progress well in Tel Aviv, and that he gets a chance to spend significant time studying in neighbouring countries as well.
