We would have loved to come in and compete with USC and Oregon for Pac 12
supremacy from day one. Clearly we can't. However, I'm far from
giving up on Whittingham and this team. I think we have a decent shot this
weekend. OSU is a good team but I still doubt they are one of the top 10 best
in the country.Whittingham keeps talking about a process in
competing in the Pac 12. I wish it weren't so, but I've still got
total confidence in him. After a handful of coaching legends such as Saban,
Miles, Spurrier, Stoops, Peterson at Boise, is there really anyone who would be
doing a better job than Whittingham? I dare say no. Give it a
couple more years and we'll be truly fighting USC, Oregon, Stanford for the
Pac 12 title and Rose Bowl. Until then - staying faithful! Behind
Utah fans who were expecting the Utes to be instant contenders in the PAC are
now learning the harsh reality that Utah's two perfect storm seasons were
not nearly enough to make the Utes a regular contender in a major conference. While it's nice to be able to rub shoulders with a big name program
like USC, the truth is, Utah's overall athletic program now faces the same
fate as Arizona's, only without Arizona's basketball and baseball
programs to take some of the sting out of Arizona not really being all that
competitive in football.A few losing seasons with no bowls and even
the staunchest Utah fans will begin to accept that fate.
"Utah Ute fans must keep faith in a quick turnaround for program"Turnaround from what?A quick review of Utah's football
history reveals that 2004 and 2008 were simply anomalies. Other than those two
brief shining moments, Utah football has never been anything more than mediocre
- only five AP Top 25 finishes in their entire history and only 6 conference
championships in the last half century is proof of that.Of course,
our friends on the hill would rather shoot the messenger, than accept reality,
but such is the life of a flash-in-the-pan, big boy wannabe program.
Christy B,The most notable flash in the pan occurred nearly 30 years
ago.... in ... say ... 1984.
RBNBYU has been a perennial Top 25 team since 1977 (18 Top 25
finishes in 35 years). Only a jealous Utah fan would try to characterize that a
flash in the pan.Take a look at BYU's record from 1979 to 1985;
then compare that to Utah's record from 2003 to 2009 if you truly want to
understand what a flash-in-the-pan Utah was.
christy and swoop,Big 12 call yet? And they won't.Congrats on your 1 win over BCS teams this year. Want to know how
many BCS wins BCS bowl teams typically have?Somewhere between
8-12You're soooooo close!
Christy,Army and Navy used to be football powers. Ditto for
Colorado. They no longer are. How many top ten finishes has BYU
had in the past 20 years? Lemme answer that for you. One.How many
top ten finishes for Utah. Three. So who's jealous? In the past twenty years Utah is 13-7 against BYU. Now we see where that BYU
jealousy comes from.
I think most U fans are pretty optimistic, but a little more realistic from when
the season started. Nothing wrong in believing in your team. Wilson
looks like he has real talent and promise. If this offense can put some points
up, they could do better than anyone expects against OSU. This team is still
full of talent across the board.Utah is just learning about all the
little details can come back to bite you. All the details they used to be able
to get away with in the MWC. Go Utes!
I was never delusional to think that Utah could make it to the Rose Bowl, but I
did have high hopes. If J Wynn would have been the same kid as 2009 Poinsettia
Bowl MVP, then Utah would of had a great year.I also didn't
expect the loss of our Sr. LB's to affect Utah as much as it has done. Utah won't make it to a bowl game, but they will get better. I have
no doubt!GO Utes!
Chris BThe BCS is dead and the Utes are nowhere near ever getting to
the Rose Bowl, let alone the playoffs.Enjoy being a little fry in a
big pond.btw, the Utes couldn't even beat a WAC team this
year.oh, and how many "bcs" opponents has Utah beaten this
year?-----------RBNAs always, beating BYU is
all our little brothers care about. Did beating BYU get U into the Top 25 last
season? Will beating BYU get U into a bowl game this year?Bottom
line, unfortunately for U, one game does not a season make.2011BYU #25 Coaches, #26 AP, #34 SagarinUtah UNRANKED, #39 Sagarin
RBN"How many top ten finishes in the last 20 years..."Sorry, but your numbers are off; here are the real numbers:BYU - TWO - 1994 and 1996Utah - THREE - 1994, 2004, 2008How
many Top 15 finishes?BYU - FIVE - 1994, 1996, 2006, 2007, 2009Utah - THREE - 1994, 2004, 2008How many Top 25 finishes?BYU - EIGHT - 1994, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011Utah - SIX -
1994, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010It's not surprising, however,
that you only wanted to look back 20 years, since Utah's Top 25 finishes
before 1994 are practically NON-EXISTENT!
Another little number for you to chew on, RBN:Bronco had almost as
many AP Top 25 finishes from 2006 to 2009 (four), as Utah has had in its ENTIRE
It's interesting how the articles on the Utes bring out so much jealousy
from BYU fans. I mean, Sports Authority, do you really feel threatened to the
point of having to bring up irrelevant statistics from BYU's past? RBN
merely pointed out that in head-to-head competition, Utah owns a 13-7 advantage
over BYU. And I'd be careful if I were in your shoes trying to pump up BYU
at Utah's expense. You do realize, don't you, that Utah holds an
all-time 56-34-4 advantage over your mighty cougars.
gored"It's interesting how the articles on the Utes bring
out so much jealousy from BYU fans."LOL!Jealous of
what?Utah having a 4-8 record in the PAC?Utah having one of
the worst offenses in the country?A team projected to be a PAC south
contender not even qualifying for a bowl?Sorry, the interest from
BYU fans is the same interest a wreck train wreck draws. We saw it
with the Utah basketball program - in steady decline since Sweater man left. Now we're seeing it with the Utah football program - in steady
decline since your high water mark of 2008.However, it is humorous
watching Utah fans pretending to be excited about their imploding football
Utah fans:1. Like it or not, BYU has done enough in football over
the last 35 years that their fans have reason to be proud.2.
There's playing in the Rose Bowl (as in facing UCLA on the road every other
year), then there's playing in the Rose Bowl (as in representing the Pac 12
as its champion). Unfortunately, Utah isn't close to the latter.BYU fans:1. I know you miss the days of beating up the Utes every
year, but those days are gone. "What have you done for me lately" has
significance in athletics, and the Utes have won 8 of the last 11, and 13 in the
last 20 head to head match ups. The Cougars may win next year's contest,
but for now, I like Utah's chances.2. Yes, the "BCS is
going away," but that doesn't mean what many of you think it means.
Membership in big 6 (yes, including the Big East) conferences will continue to
be significant, even though the BCS moniker will be retired.----------Good luck, Utes. Please show us the team we expected to
see!Good luck, BYU. Try to keep it close!
@sportsfan/duckhunterYou have pretty harsh words toward the team
that has OWNED your team throughout their football histories. If I'm not
mistaken, Utah has defeated "your" team 3 in a row; 4 of the last 5; 8
out of the last 11; and 56-34-4 overall. The defeat 2 years ago in Provo was so
thorough that "your" home fans all deserted "your" team after
only half of the game was played. Such loyalty. But for you to come
on to a Ute article to try to trash the Utes shows unbelievable arrogance."LOL"
TheSportsAuthorityArlington, VAAnother little number for you to chew
on, RBN:Bronco had almost as many AP Top 25 finishes from 2006 to
