Using this logic, why even have elections then? Why not just have a
speaker of the senate and a speaker of the house and call it a day?
This letter is silly, even if the Dems won the house Pelosi would not be speaker
What Brother Dyal neglects to mention is that his father was one of most liberal
Mormon Democrats who ever served in Congress (California). His
argument is illogical that a vote by Matheson for Pelosi "is a step
closer" for her to be Speaker. Most pundits agree that the GOP will retain
control of the House. And Bro. Dyal forgets that in 2010, Matheson and his
fellow Blue Dogs did not vote for Pelosi for Minority Leader, when the GOP took
control. Why not vote for experience and leadership with a Matheson vote, the
same argument that Republicans use when pushing for the re-election of Hatch?
When I compare Matheson versus Love, Matheson is the clear winner.
It's the Republicans who can't stand having Matheson keep winning in
strong Republican districts. He must be doing something right to warrant votes
from moderate Republicans. Those and others uneasy with the Tea Party elements
in their own party.
Good letter. A vote for Matheson is a vote for Pelosi.
Matheson also has yet to vote for Pelosi to be speaker. So a vote for Matheson
is not a vote for Pelosi. However, a vote for Mia is a vote for Boehner and a
vote to stop or out right reverse the economic growth we have had as they
won't compromise as that means losing to them.
Why argue about what Matheson WOULD do? Why not look at his record and see what
he DID, especially when his party put a little pressure on him to stand with
them on so many, many votes. He did not vote the will of the people
of Utah; he did what his party to him to do. It's in his
record. You can see every vote that he cast during his twelve years in
Congress.I'm much more alarmed about what he DID than what he
Dems chance of taking back the House this time are slim and none. Boehner is
being squeezed hard from his right. Look for Eric Cantor to try to stage a
bloodless coup if the losses to their majority are substantial. Cantor would be
a better fit for Mia Love. He sees the Tea party as his ticket to ride past
Boehner to be the next Speaker. So how can as the letter suggests we think of
the fourth district race as a "vote for Speaker"?
@Crusader"even if the Dems won the house Pelosi would not be speaker
again."I believe that she would be Speaker again if the
Democrats regain the House. However... I don't think Democrats will regain
the House, all that Republican gerrymandering (they have a ton of state
legislatures and governorships) and the census adding some seats to red states
and removing them from blue ones, will make it pretty difficult for Democrats to
win the House even with a good showing where they retain the senate and
This letter is silly beyond all reality. This is ONLY true if Jim
Matheson was a political party puritan ideologist [like the GOP has become with
their no ideas, no solution, and no compromising].Which he is
NOT.Jim Matheson is his own man, and BEST represents Utah -
regardless of Party.Sad that so many put their Party ahead of their
Liberal,You can repeat a lie "ad infinitum", but that
doesn't make your lie a fact. Jim Matheson voted with Pelosi and other
Democrats whenever they "rattled his chain". The "facts" are
there. Look them up. It's called a "voting record".
Matheson's record is in plain view. Anyone, including his apologists, can
look it up. Why don't you?
J ThompsonSPRINGVILLE, UT1:15 p.m. Oct. 9, 2012============ Did you ever stop to think that perhaps it is you
[and those like you] who are out of step with the constituants Matheson
represents? It is also possilbe to vote AGAINST one's party. That's called FREE-Agency -- something Conservative party puritians
can't understand or support or come to grips with. You can
repeat a lie "ad infinitum", but that doesn't make your lie a
fact.It IS entirely possible to be a good Mormon AND a Democrat.
Liberal,You are entitled to your opinion, but you can't claim
as "fact" that your OPINION is fact. That would be a lie and you, such
a stalwart spokesman for the LDS community, would never lie, would you?."Free Agency" does not allow you to misrepresent "facts"
to suit your purposes. Jim Matheson has a record. You can claim that his votes
didn't mean anything. You can claim that he didn't vote party line,
but that would not be the truth. His RECORD tells us otherwise. No
amount of "spin" or of outright lying can change the facts. Jim
Matheson jumped when party leaders told him to jump. He is a pawn in their
party. He voted with them, not with the citizens of Utah - your rhetoric,
@Mike Richards. What do you mean Matheson does not represent the citizens of
Utah? There are Democrats in Utah believe it or not and even some moderates.
Barrack Obama won Salt Lake county in 2008 but are lovely legislators keep on
breaking up the county to dilute democrats voters.
Shawn,You don't have a clue, do you? Matheson wasn't
elected to represent Democrats or Republicans; he represents the PEOPLE OF UTAH
- all of the people of Utah. He doesn't represent just those who voted for
him or those who might vote for him. He represents the mind and will of all the
people of Utah.Utah is the MOST CONSERVATIVE State in the nation.
No liberal can represent the mind and will of people who are conservative. Jim
Matheson is not conservative. He sometimes pretends to be conservative. When
he is running for office, he pretends to be conservative, but he is not
conservative.Look at his record. He has voted. We can see how he
voted. He did not represent the mind and will of the people of Utah when he
voted.Who did he represent? Not the people of Utah. Not the people
whom he was elected to represent. He represented those who are like him -
liberals who have nothing in common with the people of Utah.Yes
there are liberals living in Utah. No, they do not represent the mind and will
of other Utahns.
Shaun, that would be "our lovely.." not "are lovely"LDS lib,a bit touchy, are we? Who said it was impossible to be a
good mormon and a dem in this thread? When goin for my jog through my
neighborhood I pass one house with matheson signs thqt read "putting Utah
first". The thought that ALWAYS comes to my mind is "Pelosi
first"Besides, why are you so hot and bothered about it?
Matheson did not choose to run in your district. Obviously he can run in any
disctrict he wanted to in the state - I guess he though the fourth gave him his
best shot at re-election.
Mike Richards, if Matheson doesn't represent the citizens of Utah, how did
he get elected so many times? I know it will be hard, but try to wrap your mind
around the fact that not everyone in Utah thinks like you.
@ Curmudgeon,Do you have a clue about what you asked?Jim
Matheson was elected because he is the son of Scott and Norma Matheson. He was
elected because he ran in the 2nd District, where his parents were well known.
Do you really think that Jim Matheson would have been elected if ALL
of the citizens of Utah had voted for or against him? The Constitution does not
instruct us to divided the State into districts. It tells us only that we have
the right to be represented by one Representative for every X-number of
citizens, just like every other State in the Union. It is a figment
of your imagination, and of the Democrat Party, that Jim Matheson would have
EVER been elected if the top three vote-getters had been sent to Washington. He does not and he has never represented the PEOPLE of Utah. You may
cheer him on because he represents you, but unless you are one of the most
conservative people on earth, you are not representative of the people of Utah,
and Jim Matheson, if he represents YOU, does not represent the State of Utah and
@J Thompson. I think you may be wrong. Sprinville and Utah county may be
conservative but if you get out side of that bubble, there are people who are
very moderate and even liberal. If Congressmen are suppose to represent all of
the citizens where is representation from Chaffetz and Bishop for all the
moderate and liberal citizens? It seems to me you only want people
who are conservatives to have representation.
Bishop doesn't represent ALL the people of Utah in the House -- he
represents the radical far right extremists. Chaffetz doesn't represent
ALL the people of Utah in the House -- he represents the radical far right
extremists. Hatch doesn't represent ALL the people of Utah in the Senate
-- he represents the radical far right extremists. Lee doesn't represent
ALL the people of Utah i the Senate -- he represents the radical far right
extremists. The ONLY representative in Utah who represents the true
conservatives, the moderates and the liberals is Jim Matheson. If Matheson is
removed from Congress, a very large number of Utah's citizens lose their
voice in Congress. Not eeryone in Utah is a far right extremist. The
true conservatives, the moderates and the liberals deserve to have their
interests represente too. I am a true conservative and a registered Republican.
I wish I lived in the Fourth District so I could vote for Matheson and wor to
ensure that my interests are represented too.
Face it. The reality is that if Matheson wins he'll vote for Pelosi for
To Flashback 7:48 a.m. Oct. 10, 2012Face it. The reality is that if
Matheson wins he'll vote for Pelosi for speaker.------------------Not true. He didn't vote for Pelosi the
last time -- he voted for a conservative "Blue Dog" Democrat. I
don't see why he would do anything different this time around. He's
an independent, and votes his own mind.
Furry, you have every much right as the next person to write Bishop, Lee,
or Hatch and let them know how you feel about issues. You are not
disenfranchised nor do you lack representation.By your standard, I
have no POTUS, because BO only stands for the radical left.conservatives in CA have no representation in the senate because boxer and
feinstein only represent the radical left.conservateives in
pelosi's district, or in seattle, or ANYWHERE a dem has been elected have
no representation.Sounds pretty whiny to me.You may not
LIKE your representation, but you HAVE representation.Maybe you
should write matheson and ask him to run in your district next time. Location
doesn't seem to matter to him, just the desire to keep his cushy job in DC.
There are 5 registered voters in my house. We are all "people of Utah."
Jim Matheson did a pretty good job representing us. We are now
"represented" by Jason Chaffetz. He never has and probably never will
represent these "people of Utah."
Funny, some of us Demos think he's a republican because he doesn't
seem to represent us much.
