An ugly win is better than an ugly loss. The Cougar defense is for
real.Van Noy and Ansah are totally dominating their opponents often
while being double teamed. They are fun to watch. Kaufusi is going to be the
same way in a year after he gets his post mission strength back to where it
needs to be.6-3 wasn't the most exciting game but I'll
take a win any day.Next week should be a fun one.ABC
coming up then NBC the next week against two decent opponents.Oh and
Jabari listed BYU as one of his top 5!Go Cougars!
I can honestly say that I have never seen an instate game so over hyped by the
SLC writers. In a small way we're talking SuperBowl two weeks. Utah State
was the giant killer, their back, best in state, yada yada yada And this was
based on????Maybe the OT, win vs a QB-changing, clock and TO challenged
Utah , but after the Utes had their head handed to them by a freshman led, 1st
year coached ASU, nope can't be the reason. Has to be Wisconsin, the
Russell Wilson less Badgers who aren't the Rose Bowl vs TCU team off 2009.
In toto Utah State's opponents were 4-12, with just Ine decent win,
Utah's win over BYU by three. It wasn't the the Uggies fault or their
fans to get caught up in the hot air voyage of the Utags, but those sneaky,
story telling, we gunna put one over on the fans, writers. The Uggies were 7-6
last year with 5 -5pt or less wins over teams that were awful WAC units. The
Emperor wears no clothes, USU better but best, nope.
Wow, what a defensive show! The offense on both teams struggled, but then we
know BYU's offense isn't very good compared with the defense. It will
be interesting to see how well BYU's defense will do against Oregon State
and Notre Dame.A game this close could easily have gone either way.
While I am glad BYU won, I have to say I was impressed with Utah State. They
brought a tough game to BYU's house!
Looks like that best team in the state thing didn't workout for you aggies.
Interesting, it seem I beat a certain "Chris B" to the 1st post here,
must still be crying over the ute loss. As for our game, the lack of offense it
seems continues to be the offensive line. We're now putting in a patchwork
line with the loss of Famika Anae out, forever, it appears. Williams looked
human running the ball as did Hill. I will say Hill looked a lot more
comfortable passing the ball, and we'll need it against Oregon St. I still
think we have a legit shot at that game if our defense comes up big again. The
O-line must get better, stop the senseless false starts, Braden Brown 2X and
block like we know they can. They need to get MEAN! You want to see a mean
O-lineman, watch the youtube of that new recruit we got out of Oregon, Brayden
Kearsley, the kid it just a plain tough, nasty player. Anyways love the win
since my son-in-law is big aggie fan. To me we have a ton of work to do on
offense. BYU 24 Oregon St. 21
Good job Cougs!!! Judging from all the comments before the game I think they
should rename this game....."BYU vs Utah St/Utah." or "BYU vs the
rest of Utah." hahaha. Haters gonna hate.
Livid aggie fan. You don't punt the ball away with only two minutes left.
No excuse for not going for it on 4th down with the game on the line. Fire the
kicker now. No excuse for missing a 37 yard field goal that would have sent the
game into OT. If not for the kicking game USU would be undefeated and most
likely nationally ranked. Come on Ags, enough 4th quarter meltdowns.
OUR DEFENSEWatching our defense is like watching the "Avengers!"
Great movie. I bought the DVD and continue to enjoy watching it over and over.
Our defense plays like a group of superhuman superstars and I can watch them
play over and over as they continue to find ways to overcome opposition. Super
studs!OUR OFFENSEForget about the quarterback controversy. Our
offensive line is offensive! Until they get a real coach that can teach them
their assignments, they will continue to falter and create a mountain to hurdle
for the running backs and the quarterback.SPECIAL TEAMSDo they ride
the short bus to school? Do they have a coach? Do they even know that they are
competing on a collegiate level? They are the ELEPHANT MAN of the team. The
kicking game is so grotesque that one can't believe that something like
that even exists. I am so horrified that I can't bear to watch, but
curiosity overcomes my fear and I can't help myself but to watch and be
bewildered at how many ways they can manage to fail. Take some pride and play
up to the level of the defense.
19 QB draws. What a train wreck this offense is. When Hill goes up against the
big boys, one can only hope he survives. I'm glad the offense got so many
reps, but Hill missed 19 chances to work on plays that the Cougars need to
develop in a real game situation. I wonder if this game plan can work against
Notre Dame.Congratulations on a great defense Bronco. That was
amazing! But said it right when you said you were lucky to have won.
This game didn't feature two sputtering offenses, USU came in hot and
heralded. BYU deserves huge credit for shutting down the Aggie O.
How was that drive home tiny bro? Stuck in Provo longer than you wanted? We
were happy to have you take your hate home with you.
I am not one to rag on Doman, honest, but when the defense gives you the ball on
the 9 yard line, why didn't we go for the throat on first down? What
happened to the fade pass into the corner? Or that neat little pass to the
tight end that has worked so many times in the past?I think it is a
mistake to blame our offensive woes on any one thing, and I certainly think you
have to give credit to an at least decent if not good USU defense, but Taysom
isn't (yet) the superstar he can be, the line is a work in progress (at
VERY early stages, not mid-season form), and I don't think we have yet
featured the sequence of plays that will best feature the things we do have
going for us.PLEASE! No more than maybe one qb draw per game! The
qb will have to run for his life often enough. And if he chooses to take off
when they only rush three, I suppose that's okay. Until the line finds
it's mojo, can we try to protect our qb a little better?
Where is our offense? Where is our kicking game? If we had any kind of both,
this would have been a blow out. With 30,000 students, don't you think you
can find at least one who can kick it through the up-rights? Seriously, we need
to hold some try-outs for kickers. BYU is a Nationally recognized football
program and we don't anybody that can kick it through the up-rights?
C'mon! Coaches - find someone. Our offense revs up sometimes
but just sputters again. Are we making bad play calling or are we making bad
decisions before the season? Let's get the job done. With our
defense, we should be nationally ranked. I have never seen BYU have a better
defense. What a waste to have it with this Offense and Kicking game. Coach Bronco said: "I'd rather win easy, but that doesn't happen
very much." Yeah it doesn't but you could. BYU could have a top ten
team easily. These 2 failures on Offense and Kicking fall on the coaches.
Plenty to be excited about, plenty to be concerned about.ExcitedBYU D is for real. The DBs weren't perfect on a couple of
assignments, but Aggies couldn't capitalize. Otherwise, the D was perfect.
Williams is going to be a stud. Hill has a bright future. ConcernedO line are getting way too many penalties. Forget
the mediocre blocking, they're killing us with false starts and holding
penalties. Kicking game is a nightmare. It's one thing to not
be able to count on FGs outside of 35 yards, but to know that every PAT is 50/50
at best. Come one, there has to be someone on the team who can kick PATs.OC is calling way too many QB draws. If this continues, Nelson
won't make it through a whole game when he returns. And even Hill
can't sustain this beating. Why would we run Hill up the middle with 1:00
remaining to get smacked by the Aggie D one more time? He was obviously
hurting. And we have to figure out how to punch the ball into the end zone in
the blue zone. Poor play calling.
I've been following BYU football since the early 1970s, and this is the
best defense I've ever seen from the Cougars. This is also the worst
kicking game. And the offense is in the bottom third all-time at BYU. Maybe
things will improve if Riley gets healthy and the offensive line can stop
playing like freshmen. However, I can't see much hope for the kicking
game. I now understand why BYU went for the two-point conversion at Boise.
Bronco mentioned that Taysom was a possibility. Perhaps, Hill should get a
Hill was allowed to throw the ball at the end of the first half and demonstrated
what he could do. In the second half the pass was forbidden. Can you
imagain how it would have looked for Riley had Hill ran up 4 or 5 touchdowns on
USU? Doman may become a great offensive coordinator in a decade, but not soon
enough to save this program.
Yes, BYU was a highly recognized program under LE but he knew he couldn't
recruit 4 and 5 Star players so he developed an offense that was quick and
effective through the air. That BYU no longer exists. Six points against an
average team is embarrassing. I haven't seen BYU look so bad sense the beat
USU 3 field goals to 2 field goals in the early 1970's. Sad to day
that's where the cougars are now. Not the defense but the whole team. The
game is played on both sides of the ball, and it's called American
Football. that means somebody has to be able to kick the ball. One
more thing Bronco drop the OC hat so you can be the head coach. I do
admire Bronco for keeping the teams priorities straight, sport is not the most
important thing and yes it should be rankedsomewhere after Family, God, and
@CougFaninTx"Why would we run Hill up the middle with 1:00 remaining
to get smacked by the Aggie D one more time?"My question
exactly. This was one of the many times you could find me yelling at my
television. The way Doman abuses his QB's, he's not going to have any
left by the end of the season. Someone said 19 QB draws. Really? That just shows
a total lack of imagination by the OC.Wayne--you're also right.
We finally get a good drive at the end of the half getting the ball to the best
playmaker on the offense--Hoffman--and then we essentially abandon that strategy
in the 2nd half. Doman has got to allow the QB to pass more and use his running
The Aggie defense isn't THAT good; the BYU offense IS that bad. Not
Hill's fault--he's just an inexperienced freshman doing his best.BYU's kicking game will sink them in upcoming games against better
talent.I'd love to see BYU win the next three, but
wouldn't be surprised to lose at least two of them. Depends on whether the
defense can keep it up while the offense improves. Pretty iffy prospect.Last night's game was like getting a root canal. Definitely
won't re-watch it.
Everything that the fans HATED about Robert Anae's play calling, Brandon
Doman has embraced. He is predictable and very limited. His lack of
imagination is astounding! This is the worst and the most boring offense that
BYU has ever fielded!
I probably will not be able to watch what Oregon State, Notre Dame and Georgia
Tech are going to do to with our weak offensive line. Our quarterbacks will be
bashed and bruised beyond belief.
The game was fun to watch, waiting for someone to blink. The Aggies did by
punting on 4th down. Doman has some work to do as do the special teams staff.
Coach interviews after the game confirm that Mendenhall and Anderson are the
quality coaches of this state. Fans could learn something from them.
Good game BYU. However, I do see a shift happening similar to what happened
with BYU and Utah in the early 90s when Ron MacBride took over. There are no
more BYU blowouts of USU. USU is still a program on the rise. Frankly, aside
from BYU's terrific defense, BYU seems like a program that has plateaued.
Unless BYU is willing to make some changes (particularly in their offensive
coordinator( BYU is as good as their going to get.
The only offense Doman knows is the opotion, because he was an option QB,i
think it is time to get rid of Doman as the OC and get someone who knows
how to call plays that are not all running plays,Bronco needs to look at
the game films and realize that Doman is not the answer,he fired ANAE for
calling 1 or 2 stupid plays, well thats all Doman knows how to call,Bronco
wake up and do the right thing hire a real OC.
I think that a lot of fans need to appreciate a great defensive game when they
see one. Last week BYU scored 47 points, USU scored 35 points. Nobody can
reasonably argue that both had a very solid offensive outputs. But
then fans say that it was because BYU and USU played against weak defenses. And
I say, exactly correct. This week BYU and USU faced a couple of very good
defenses and I for one appreciated it. In fact, it was a very exciting game for
me. I loved the play of both defenses.Bottom line is that USU had a
better offense than BYU last night and play calling was better, but BYU had a
buzz saw of a defense. Though USU has a very good defense, BYU has a better
defense. That was the difference in the ball game.BYU has a lot to
work on and its obvious to everyone what those issues are on offense and in the
kicking game. The coaches are obligated to put the best team with the best game
plan on the field each and every week. Hopefully they will against OSU.
Re: Y Dad"What happened to the fade pass into the
corner?"Answer: You don't have anyone who can throw it.
Doman needs to go. If he isnt gone by the end of the year, it's Bronco that
should pay the price. Bronco is incapable of making tough decisions. He fired
Jaime Hill only when Hill became defiant/unloyal. Since Doman is apparently a
nice guy and a friend, I can't see Bronco holding him accountable for his
terrible play calling any time soon.Let's be honest: USU has
improved but should not be able to hold any opponent to 6 points, let alone a
team with the offensive weapons BYU has. Oh, and Mark Weber is a
joke of an offensive line coach. That one goes without saying. While Doman could
arguably be allowed to finish out the season (due only to lack of other
options), Weber should be gone yesterday.
Scheduling missionaries in and out of football programs just got easier. Now
they won't start college until after their missions.
Mid-Season Grades on Bronco Mendenhall:Defense:AOffense:COffensive Line:DSpecial Teams:DKicking Game:FControlling the
players on the Bench: DCoaching Staff:DIf you look at where BYU is
right now you have to wonder what was Bronco doing all last year. If he is just
micro focused on the defense he has to be reminded that he is a head coach. I
think it is time to give Bronco what he wants and what he can handle. Demote him
from Head Coach to Defensive Coordinator and BYU should bring in a Head Coach
that can improve the whole team.
Nice win but your offense is even worse than our #112 offense in the country.Keeton was supposed to be the best QB in the state? He played worse
than a D2 QB last night.Hays vs BYU 152 QB RatingKeeton vs BYU
102 QB RatingNext three weeks decides your season, 1-2 most likely.
Great game for both teams. I quit being an ACC (Arm Chair Coach) since there
are many on these posts. I can't compete with all of them know-it-all
kinda coaches. Go Cougs!
Y Grad / Y DadYou don't get the point. The QB draw was the
play called 19 times in the game. It wasn't that he had to scramble to get
away from anyone chasing him. That was the called play and THAT'S
what's wrong with it. We all love a mobile scrambling QB, and we are all
impressed with Taysom Hill's abilities. We are so lucky to have him. But
this team will not go anywhere if they cannot establish a sound running back or
two, and 4-6 good receivers. Most of all, we need more than a few plays,
especially the predictable 3 down QB draw. Anae's demise was due to him
have only 4 plays in his playbook and BYU's offense because to lame and
predictable. Doman has to get his offense on track.
Y Grad / Y DadSorry I misread your post. I thought you were
complaining about those of us who want the QB draw dropped as a main play. I
see we are on the same page. Thanks for joining us and I apologize for
misunderstanding you. You are spot on, sir!
BYU needs to return to the quick passing game. 5-8 yards a pass. Quick routes
run well. A great 3 step drop, occasional 7 step but everything needs to be
timing patterns with confidence that if a receiver runs his route he will be
open. We don't do that anymore. We wait until we see the open receiver and
then we throw the ball. This is not the game of the Scovills and Tolners. BYU
has better athletes now than we did in the early 80s but the offense under
performs. Time to pull out the old playbooks but more importantly the old
philosophy of quick routes, timed passes with an attitude of "if you are
going to beat us, you are going to need to outscore us." Great
win Cougars... boring to watch.
Hill has a ton of potential but he needs some mentoring. It is not in his (or
the team's) best interest to be escaping the pocket so quickly, and running
the ball 2 out of 3 plays. Whether it is from the OC or the QB coach he needs
some intensive tutoring that I don't think he is getting right now. And I know it has been rehashed over and over on these boards but
seriously Doman, your play calling stinks and you're ruining a great raw QB
talent in Taysom Hill.
uteology, youre really going to poke fun at us, when we won and you
guys........lost?. haha thats hilarious. you guys will be lucky to win a game
the rest of the season.
BYU so far is 1-1 in the snoozer games. That game last night was one of the most
boring game I've ever seen. Both teams looked bad!
UteologyBitter aren't we? Yeah, USU was supposed to come down
here and kick some Cougar hind ends weren't they? But instead BYU played
hard defense and just enough offense to squeak by.BYU's win
over USU was like another devastating loss to several of you Ute "fans"
and that makes me smile. Our offense is having problems, special
teams too, but this win will help a lot going forward.Has losing
your first two conference games helped the Utes any?
When I heard the score was 6-3 I thought someone misunderstood me and told me
the Cardinals Braves score. What has happened to the QB U? Where is all the
prolific scoring that ESPN signed up for? 7-6 against BSU and now 6-3 vs. USU?
McMahon, Bosco, Young, Detmer and even little Maxi must be freaking about now.
They are wondering what has happened to the program that they helped put on the
national stage. Remember the days of pass plays over 15 yards? The 4-500 yard
passing games. What is this new strategy at the Y? I can call my doctor now and
tell him I no longer need Ambien, I'll just watch the BSU and USU games and
I'll be asleep in no time. Too funny...
Doman promised fans last year the BYU offense of old. The problem is he only
went as far back as his own playing experience, which was mediocre at best.
This is what Mendenhall and Doman have given fans. I'm still baffled at
how this staff treated Jake Heaps last year and left him feeling like he had no
choice but to transfer. That move set the QB position at BYU back more than a
whole QB cycle. I know a lot of BYU fans here say (and said) "Good
riddance" to Jake for whatever reason, but for me, it was nothing short of
shameful, and I have little-to-no respect for Doman and Mendenhall because of
it. This coaching staff is now giving BYU fans very little to look forward
to--other than the hope for another mediocre opponent in this year's
Poinsettia Bowl (provided BYU finishes 6-6 at worst).
@sammygBitter about what? I never claimed USU will win. At the
start of the season I said with 5 tough games (@Utah, @Boise, USU, @ND, @GT)
most likely BYU will go 1-4 maybe 2-3. Now you have Oregon State to deal with
and even with Hill your offense was abysmal. Can't blame this one on
Riley. "Has losing your first two conference games helped the
Utes any?"I think so. Its obvious that we can play sloppy (120+
yards in penalties) against a team like BYU at home and win but against a PAC-12
teams we better bring our game or get exposed. I don't expect you to
understand that since last week your offense scored 47 points this week 6 points
both equal a win. Scoring 6 points in PAC-12 play even against Colorado
won't cut it.
Uteology,Utah is in the Pac 12 like Compton is in the same County as
Bel Air. Same county, yes, but different worlds.
A) If that game us Alabama and LSU, people nationwide would be praising the
defenses. It's been almost 3 games since someone scored a TD against
BYU's defense. That is hard to do no matter who you play.B) If BYU
can protect the ball the next three weeks, they have a genuine, though unlikely,
shot at winningC) Arizona has put up 48 on Stanford -- so far.
That's where the man who should still be the OC at BYU is coaching the
line. Neither BYU's offense nor its offensive line would be as bad if Anae
was still the OC at BYU.
hahahahha @ uteology, only you would be here criticizing our team for
a win after arizona st & usc mopped the floor with you guys. hahaha
Who's best in state now? USU beats Utah, Utah beats BYU, and BYU beats USU.
Those three games end with 1-1 records for all. Each of the three games were
ugly and could have gone either way. I don't see a clear cut team as the
best. Frankly they all look mediocre. Utah can make big plays, they
have good athletes, and can be hot in spurts. In totality though, they lack
offensive versatility, have a patchwork Offensive Line, a talented defense still
looking for linebackers to compliment it, and a defensive chemistry that still
hasn't come together.BYU is fundamentally sound defensively.
They have defensive playmakers in Anseh, Van Noy, and an unusually athletic
Cougar secondary. They play physical defense with an attitude. Against better
opponents though, BYU's 1938 offense will need to get 10 times better than
baseball scores of 6-7 and 6-3. Is this really BYU? USU gets the
most out of what they have. Coach Anderson has improved this team a ton. Still,
USU has a long way to go. Their weak schedule has three quality opponents
already played. They are 1-2 in those (Utah, BYU, & Wisconsin).
@loner star cougar "Yeah it doesn't but you could. BYU could have a top
ten team easily."Thanks for the laugh haven't laughed that
hard in a long time. If cougies are top 10 I guess utes are top 5 lol.@u mad bro "only you would be here criticizing our team for a win after
arizona st & usc mopped the floor with you guys. hahaha"A
team that was mopped on the floor by Az st and USC beat and continues to own the
cougies hahaha! Before you bag on a team you should think seeing how that team
has dominated recent and overall match up's hahahaCougie
fan's obviously think the cougie D is greatest D ever assembled. They are
good not going to say their not. How good though? Nobody knows they have yet to
play a good offense and frankly they don't have one outside maybe the irish
on the schedule. Yes they have been solid against bad offenses not good enough
to beat the utes though.
If somebody told BYU fans that they would lose to Boise State by one point on
the road and beat Utah State, they might feel somewhat decent with that news
(not knowing about the Ute game). But if you told them they would play two
baseball games in those with scores of 6-7 and 6-3, they would be shocked at how
good the defense is and how poor the offense has become. The exposure
of ESPN benefits BYU in a major way, but even I as a Ute fan have been
embarrassed by the offense and it's disconnect with BYU history.
bradleyc:I disagree. I don't think BYU has better athletes now
than they did in the 1980's, not even close. Let's take the offense
of 1984 vs. now, there isn't player on this year's team I would take
over that team. As much as we think Hill is athletic, or Hoffman is athletic or
how the big OL line is or whatever, I would still take Bosco, Kozlowkski, Mills,
Bellini, Sikahema over these guys. The defense seems really, really good this
year but in 1984 it was pretty good as well. BYU has not played a team yet with
a good offense so chances are when the season is over the two teams
statistically (1984 and 2012) will probably be similar, even the edge to 1984
perhaps. As far as the kicking game/special teams go, well the kickers of this
team couldn't hold Lee Johnson's kicking tee. Falslev is an exciting
return man as is Hoffman but Sikahema was far superior. Several of the 1984 team
played in the NFL and some had very lengthy careers. I would be surprised if
4-5 players on this team played in the NFL.
I hope Bronco figures out the problem quickly, but out with Doman and in with
Detemer. Just saw that possible Hill is out for the year. How many qbs have to
get destroyed by bad play calling before Doman goes? I was being patient, but it
is gone! Doman is a bad OC.
u sleep bro? 6 points vs USU6 points vs Boise (New Mexico 29
uteology,so you know how the scoreboard works....ok....now what?
umm... just because there is a lack of score, doesn't mean GREAT defense!
Sometimes, like last night, the 2 offenses were so bad, the D looked good by
default. I'm not saying that USU and BYU can't score or are horrible
offenses, it's just that last night, they were. Sorry.
That's right. BYU scored 6 points at Boise State. New Mexico scored 29
points and missed beating Boise State by a FG. Washington State is awful, and
Utah is no world beater. USU is better than they used to be, but have a long way
to go. BYU hasn't played anybody. They did put up points on Hawaii and
Weber State, but those two teams are dreadful.
2BCSWINS,ohhh sorry for defending my team on byu article. its funny,
you guys continue to have that...."no matter what happens we still beat you
guys attitude".....which is why you guys are sitting at the bottom of the
pac 12. hahahahaha. so don't come on here talking smack when you guys were
whooped by the last 2 teams you played. what are you guys gonna do if you dont
win another game this season? let me guess ".....oh its ok, because we still
beat you guys and its ok if we lose because we play w/ the big boys and even
though we cant hang w/ them were still cool because were in the same conference
as them" haahahaha.
@yankees27Aren't you the biggest whiner on these boards about
BYU fans posting negative things about utah on utah articles? Pot meet
kettle. But to your point.....BYU WON....utah lost. Good teams win
more often than they lose, like BYU. Bad teams lose more often than they win,
like utah. BYU is 4-2, utah is 2-3. BYU will have a winning record. utah will
have a losing record.
It's nice to be able to marvel over the Defense for a change... Offense has
always been our game, but with the promotion of Doman to OC those days are
gone... Doman simply got the job too early in his career and it looks like it
could end up ruining future opportunities for him... He has great talent in
Hill, Nelson, Hoffman, Apo and future star RB Williams... He just doesn't
know how to use them... He doesn't know how to develop a scheme to leverage
his star's talents... He's running the same plays he ran back in the
90's when he was the QB... Sweeps and sweep options. the problem is,
he's not the QB and Luke Staley is not in his backfield. The
place kicking game is an embarrassment... Most HS programs have a better PK
game... In fact, I have seen a half dozen girls in soccer this year that are
better kickers than the 2 we use... Had we had just a dead average Division I
kicker this year we would be undefeated right now.Perhaps Bronco should
make PK a recruiting priority for next year.
Bronco has managed to take 1 big step forward, and two big steps back... Defense
at BYU is better than it has ever been and I have been following the Cougs for
50 years (since I was 10)...Yes, it's even better than the days of Jason
Buck, Todd Shell and Tom Holmoe. The Offense has taken a giant step
backwards and I attribute that to the coaching, not the talent... Just need a
seasoned OC who knows how to tailor an Offensive Scheme to the talent... Less QB
options, more misdirection, shovel passes, screen passes and pocket passing. The absolute worse part of our game is place kicking... We don't
have one that we can even RELY on for extra points. Mendenhall needs to conduct
tryouts on Monday for anyone in the 30,000 strong student population that thinks
that they can kick... Take the best two, suit them up, and the first one that
can kick a field goal in a game situation gets a scholarship for the year... If
they prove to be real good, they get a full ride. Anything is better than what
we have... Too much pressure on the Offense and Defense.
Congrats, Cougars. i honestly did not think you had it in you. If you had
started Riley, this owuld have been a different outcome.
