Dick Harmon: BYU football: Defensive showdown coming for BYU, USU

    Has Dick Harmon moved to Logan?

    True, a tipped pass was the difference in last year's game, but the play drew a pass interference penalty that was declined because of the touchdown on the play. Except for an offensive pass interference call earlier, Utah could have won their game against USU. USU also lost a game this year on a missed field goal. Last year they were legendary for turning victory into defeat. They may go to a bowl and Utah may not; no one knows for sure presently.

    Sportscasters try to motivate teams by their rhetoric but coaches usually don't bother with such stuff; it only sells newspapers.

    I agree it could be a defensive sluggfest, which was the case in Boise for BYU. There are few 3-2 teams that are two plays away from being 5-0. The last time USU was 4-0 and beat BYU in Provo (1978) to be 5-0, they promptly became nationally ranked, got a big head, and started losing.

    When USU starts to win about 8+ games a season I'll believe they have a real program; 6 or 7 WAC teams isn't doing it.

    Bronco learn by bad experiences? If he does it comes very slowly if at all. But Bronco can hardly be blamed for BYU-inertia, while his testimony like endorsement of Riley Nelson at halftime of the Hawaii game was a real curious action. You finally show offensive life, so naturally Bronco has to throw cold water on the Hill parade but telling the world, "Riley Nelson is our QB, Taysom Hill is a wannabe".
    The center of BYU-Inertia is the AD's office. Try and tell me there is anything at all going on there as I hear crickets and see spider webs.
    Dennis Dodd CBS sports College football expert- "BYU could be hurt more than any team with the new BCS playoff"s.
    PAC commish Scott- "There is nothing stopping BYU from making arrangements with playoff bowls". (if they qualify, the bowl would take them, BSC conf have auto-tie in's or BYU will have to stand up for themselves)
    Big 12 Commish- "BYU has never made us aware of what they want to do"
    Down on the farm Tom Holmoe says ? Crickets cricking, spiders spinning webs the phones are dead, no activity is taking place.

    @toosmartforyou

    2 plays from 5-0? USU is 1 play from 5-0 and beat Utah, who BYU lost to. BYU's offense has frankly been horrid against decent competition... Washington State, Weber State, and Hawaii are not good teams...

    And USU lost on a missed field goal? If you don't remember, I'll remind you... The same day Utah State lost on a missed 37 yard field goal... BYU lost on a missed 36 yard field goal...

    Harmon moved to Logan??? - The fact is that as far as this year is concerned, so far, Utah State looks like as good or better a team than BYU...

    The game will be close... Should be fun.

    Come on Dick, you can do a better job getting USU & BYU fans fired up.

    This is so simple. If Bronco starts Riley than USU wins. If Hill plays BYU wins.

    Why are Aggie fans so crazy now? Utah fans have much better sportsmanship in Provo.
    Hey trueblueaggie - your offense will not score anymore points against the cougs than Boise did.

    @troy,

    If the Aggies show up to the stadium, they will win regardless if Hill or Nelson plays. It's funny that you think USU won't score just because you have held horrible offenses down. Boise is as bad as they have been since before Koetter was there. Weber State, Hawaii really? And Washington State will most likely finish last in the PAC 12. Face it...USU > Utah > byu....but you are better than Weber State.

    See what I mean about Aggie fans? I know you are moving in the right direction, but seriously you guys lose interest in your team after a couple losses. I respect USU a great deal, but it's fans are embarrising. Act like you've been there before.

    I never said anything about about a National Championship. I know BYU will lose 2-3 more games this year. And will likely fall to the Aggies because Riley will throw the ball to the wrong team 4 times.

    Bring it on Aggie fans! Give us your ugliest pregame trash talk possible.
    Just one question: why did you do two-for-one with BYU? Why would you settle for such belittlement?

    Sports nuts how long has it been since Hawaii was blanked? How many did they put up against USC?

    It's been so long since the Aggies were even competitive that it's kinda fun to see a few of our friends from Cache Valley feeling good about themselves. Feel free to under-estimate just how good BYU's defense is and the marked improvement in BYU's offense.

    Are you kidding? Hawaii couldn't beat Lone Peak this year. Records from years past don't mean squat when it comes to college sports. If you think that Hawaii, Boise and Washington State are good teams this year, then you have no concept of "good" football. Maybe that comes from watching the cougars this year? And if USU were in the PAC 12 they would finish ahead of a very poor Mike Leach coached team. Once again, live in the present because Leach and his Texas Tech ways are done.

    Glad its a home game for the Y. It's also great to see USU doing so well. Enjoy this moment in the sun because it will soon come to an end. In this big dog eats little dog world of college football, other's are also noticing coach Anderson's work. It won't be long before a big program raids the sleepy little town of Logan with the big bucks that unfortunately the Aggie's won't possibly be able to match and then,...... well its back to square one again. The way the Utes are playing right now that big program that wants to take a new direction may not be all that far away. Coach Calhoun of Air Force said it best. He worries that college football has become more football and less college.

    The game is USU's to win or lose. BYU football fans still think they play old time BYU football in Provo. They don't. BYU has not beaten anyone good in years. Literally. USU should win this game.

    Why do sports fans so often say "we" and "you" when they really mean "the Cougars" or "the Aggies" or whatever? Living by proxy? Neurotic need to personalize it, or to feel somehow involved instead of just being a spectator?

    Unless you're on the team or staff, it's not "we."

    I notice this mostly because it seems that petty comments tend to come up more often when it has become over-personalized.

    Go Aggies! Go down and rock that stadium!

    @ Troy,

    Hill is just a clone of Riley.. Does BYU have any traditional QB? You have great receivers but those BYU QBs aren't getting the ball to them

    As for 2-1s because it was part of a previous deal. Those days are done. GA has made that clear.

  • VAggie Bristow, United States
    Sept. 30, 2012 2:22 a.m.

    @toosmart,

    ok... where to start...

    1. BYU would have had a shorter field, but BYUs current style of play during that drive, would have been more likely to struggle the shorter the field. Not that it matters, the point is it was a close game.
    2. Sure we missed a game on a field goal. In one of the toughest stadiums in America. 1 game, against a decent BIG team, a team more difficult than anyone BYU has played to date.
    3. You call that game in Boise a defensive slug fest? More like an offensive toilet bowl.
    4. We'll win 8 this year for sure. BYU may not even win 6. with potential losses to USU, SJSU, ND, GT, and OSU

  • Frozen Chosen Savage, MN
    Sept. 30, 2012 6:46 a.m.

    If Bronco can't see that Taysom Hill is a better QB than Riley Nelson then he has no business being a head coach. BYU already has 2 losses this season - they're not going anywhere. They may as well begin the Taysom Hill era and get him some critical experience before next year's brutal schedule.

    I sincerely doubt that Bronco has the judgement to figure this out...

    I'll be happy if BYU has been able come up with a couple of offensive plays that work that are NOT the QB draw. I watched the rerun of the Notre Dame / BYU game of a few years ago with Beck and Berry at QB and BYU today is nothing near the caliber of team they were in those days offensively. Doesn't anybody else miss the tight end passes and the flair outs by backs and the great crossing patterns by wide receivers? This will be a tough game for BYU. I hope they are up to the task. I'm anxious to see how the defense holds up against a good offense like USU.

    This is coming from someone without a dog in the fight. I just love college football. I do not understand why BYU fans think they are anything other then a average team at best over the past couple years. BYU has a great defense. I love the way they hit. The offense is very poor. Excellent receivers paired with your two starting QBs who cant throw the ball. Terrible play calling with no feel for the game. Its offense is a mess and the coaches are in denial.

    USU a good defense. Chuckie Keeton is a good QB as well. The Aggies are thin at qb and thats a concern against a brutal defense like BYU. I love USU's offense, much better then the Cougars. Aggies special teams are not to be counted on which can hurt in a tough game. Coaching edge goes to GA against BYU. Tough game but edge goes to the Aggies. Best QB and coach in the state of Utah. This could be the year when the Aggies are the best team in the State.

    I am sure it will be a great game. I hope students don’t run out on the field before time has expired and that students don’t run up to the opposing coach as he leaves the field and curse him out, especially getting it caught on national TV for the entire world to see the embarrassing demonstration of having no class.

    Is BYU's program more established? Yes. Has BYU been more successful? Yes. Does BYU have much more money? Yes. Are BYU's facilities nicer? Yes. Does USU have to play 2 for 1's just to play BYU? Yes. Great. Congrats to Cougar Nation. Regardless of all of that, it is undisputed that as between USU and BYU, one program is stalling out and the other is rising. One program no longer has the confidence it once had, while other has more than it's ever had. One program constantly does more than 95% of FBS schools with the budget it has, while the other does not. All let you decide which is which.

    This could come down to a QB match up vs a defensive match up. Chucky vs Hill would be an amazing game....

    That's why this Ute loves Bronco!!!

  • Rirruto Nampa, Id
    Sept. 30, 2012 9:43 a.m.

    First off, Chuckie Keaton could run circles around Joe Southwick. Second, BYU's defense is insanely good, no matter what USU fans WANT to believe. Third, BYU has a good Offense, when they choose to use it. At the moment they aren't. Riley Nelson was the better choice over heaps. Hill is the better choice over Riley. Its not a question of whether either team will score. I think it will come down to who has the ball last. Aggie fans, you are getting a taste of what its like to have a good team, FINALLY. Don't make fools of yourselves by acting like your team is unbeatable. BYU fans, just sit back and relax. Bronco isn't a great head coach, but he is a great defensive coordinator. USU will struggle with scoring, just like BYU. Why don't we just enjoy it and stop fighting about it?

    Once again I am talking about right now, the present. The past byu teams will not be playing the old Aggie teams no matter how much you seem to be thinking so. The fact that you think that Hawaii and Boise are good teams this year, does show you don't have a clue. As long as Andersen is coaching here and Bronco there, the Aggies will continue to get better while byu will continue it's slide down to average. Troy, right now today....byu is number 3 in the state so deal with it.

    Wow! Utah State wins 3 out of its 4 games and all of a sudden Aggie fans like Sports Nutz think they are unbeatable! And people say BYU fans are delusional? Look, the Aggies appear to have a good team this year, but we dont know how good because they have not beaten anyone good yet any more than BYU has. Yes, you beat Utah, but Utah is not a great team this year. The same Utah team that you beat in OT (with a little help from officials) went down to ASU and got destroyed. Yes, Utah beat BYU, but two plays are all that separates a complete reversal of the scenario with Utah beating USU and BYU beating Utah. Two plays! In other words, all 3 teams are pretty evenly matched this year. I realize that for Aggie fans, who have suffered through decades of being one of the worst teams in D1, just being able to say that is a big deal, but that doesn't mean you have arrived yet. And remember one more thing, the better season USU has this year, the more phone calls Gary Andersen will get when the season is over.

    yes. And Wisconsin is good.They took Nebraska to the wire this week, and also lost to an excellent Oregon State team. They still beat UTEP. Is Wisconsin as good as they used to be? No. Is Camp Randall still, Camp Randall? Yes. It seems like Wisconsin plays up or down to their competition.Point being, for a BYU fan to hold that missed FG (with 11 seconds left) over our heads as evidence that BYU is better than USU is laughable, given they did the same thing that week. 3 times.

    I have greta respect for USU football and what Coach Anderson has done down there, but USU fans are as bad as some BYU fans. If you think you are going to destroy BYU down in Provo, you are crazy! I talked to a friend that is an Aggie fan and he is sure USU is going to cream BYU. They have a decent chance of winning the game, but it will be close. I know you have played some good teams this year and played well (I was just as upset about USU losing to Wisc as I was BYU losing to Utah) but to say you are going to put a beat down on BYU shows some ignorance. One other thing, if you take away 2 defensive td's, BYU has given up 36 points. That is 7.2 points a game! I don't care who you have played, that is good.

  • Jazzsmack Holladay, UT
    Sept. 30, 2012 8:35 p.m.

    I don't believe nelson should starting.

    That should be obvious to anyone who is watching.

    But Hill has yet prve he can pass.

    Last week Hill only averaged about 10 yards a pass on 21 attempts, very nelson like.

    keeton averaged nearly 20 yards a pass, and had over 40 attempts.

    much more BYU like than BYU's QBS.

    Lark should be starting, and the BYU offense does have talent to have big passing games, and big offensive numbers,

    But Weber is bad o-line coach and even with personnel changes in the line it's probably as good its going to get this year, or any year under Weber. Remember it wasn't good last year either.

    BYU has only managed barely above average offensive performance against the weakest teams on their schedule over the last couple of years, and consistently poor performance against any "good" team.

    Until BYU can average over 12 yards a pass that will continue.

    Although one can claim BYU is atleast on par with USC this year in comparative performance against the same team at home.

    Unless BYU's passing offense improves the USU game will be reminiscent of Boise and utah

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT

    Then you are laughing at something that is false. No BYU fans claimed any of the stuff you said. What's even funnier than the false bravado uf usu fans like yourself is that you have to actually make stuff up to try and make it sound like you're making a relevent point.

    LOL!

    usu has improved but they are a long way from being anything great. They have a chance to win Friday, I'll give them credit for that, but a 3-1 start for the 1st time in 50 years ishardly a powerhouse program.

    Double LOL for that thought.

    Hey, let the Aggies enjoy their one year of fame. It only happens once every 25 years or so. And regardless of what fans say on either side of the aisle, the game will be decided on the field Friday night at LES.

    I would be worried If I were an Aggie fan.

    I would be worried If I were a Cougar fan.

    Should Be A great game.

    @4601,

    Not exactly sure what a ream is, but I figure you are a big financial wizard so you would know, right? When we want advice on penny stocks we will look you up, but you should leave the football talk to those who know. You are obviously out of your element.

    @ idaho cougar,

    I don't think it will be a blow out either way, it's just fun to go back and forth with fans of other teams. While I agree that byu has a good defense, I am not impressed with the teams they have played. As I have said, Hawaii, Weber and Washington St. are not good at all. It will be fun to watch on Friday.

    Taysom Hill is showing great promise as BYU QB demolishing Hawaii. There's talk in Cougar circles about Hesiman potential in Hill.

    The Aggies don't have much of a chance. Sorry little brothers.

    @sports Nutz,

    I know you did not say it, but other aggie fans have. I know BYU has not played anybody super good either, but USU has? Ole' bucky is a little down this year and last I heard BSU has only lost 3 home games since 2000. BSU is not as good as they have been, but saying BSU is no good and then saying Wisconsin is good, do you truely believe it? Yes, USU should have beaten Wisc., you probably could say the same thing about BYU. A -8 turnover differential in 2 games on the road and they lost by a combined score of 4 points. Last year a -5 against Utah was a 40 point beat down. BYU should not be taking lightly, if BYU (A BIG IF, DOMAN) can muster any offense they win Friday night.

    Funny stuff Cosmo. What is the Hesiman? Do you mean He's a man? Is that a byu award? And yes Hill did look great and Hawaii, as has every single team they have played.

    Don't get your knickers in a bunch over the Heisman comments of Cosmo's Cousin - he's nothing but a Utah troll trying to get a rise out of unsuspecting bloggers.

    Looking forward to Friday night. Here's to hoping that Bronco is taking this game seriously and actually prepares the team for the opponent this time around.

    @Lightening Lad - Your playoff / conference affiliation speculation is purely that. BYU is a church run school, they're going to keep fans including myself in the dark. Members of the LDS church would be outraged to find out the football coach is being paid $1M+ of tithing money for example. So, would you like competitive sports programs or more transparency?

    @VAggie - You can tell yourself that only Hill was a four star Elite 11 QB and I'm not sure Nelson was known by anyone other than USU out of high school. Hill also showed more in one drive in Boise than Nelson has in two years in Provo. Hill will make mistakes and he shows a general lack of awareness in the pocket but, I'll take a lack of awareness as a Fr. over a lack of ability to play the QB position as a Sr.

    "As for 2-1s because it was part of a previous deal. Those days are done. GA has made that clear."

    USU refused a 2 for 1 from Utah which makes sense given relatively equal No.'s when it comes to fans packed into the stadium. I haven't seen the same news regarding BYU.

    USU is a team that try to lose their games at the very end.

    @won84,

    Nelson not known by anyone other than USU might be the dumbest statement ever on these boards. Nelson was a Parade All-American coming put of High School so you need to do your homework before you post nonsense. It is funny how so many byu fans wanted to throw Heaps under the bus last year so they could have Riley save them, and now they want Riley thrown away to bring on Hill. I really don't care who plays QB for byu this week, they both bring different abilities to the table. Riley has proven himself, while Hill has had all of one game against a very poor team. I suspect Riley would have put up great numbers against them as well.

    Riley hasn't proven himself.

    And Bronco is not paid with tithing dollars.

    You mean that the gate and ESPN money aren't considered tithing? My accountant told me I could deduct my season tickets and cable bill as charitable donations. LOL!

    This is coming from a Cougar fan, and it is hard to say, but I think that the Aggies win 20-7

    If Hill start, which we know won't happen, I think we will win 27-24. So since we know that Nelson will start, Byu will barely put up any points, and even though Bronco will put Hill it at the end, it will be FAR too late, probably with 5 minutes left in the final quarter. He'll put up the only points in a 20-7 loss.

    Ha ha Mesa Coug.

    Bronco's salary comes from a fund supported by a group of wealthy BYU football fans. They were scared Bronco would get hired away. This salary increase was approved by BYU and the church.

    Whit got a raise shortly thereafter to ensure he was the highest paid coach in the state.
