I am so hopeful that BYU will put McMahon in the Hall of Fame sooner rather than
later even if he's .5 credit short of graduation. No offense to Detmer or
Young but McMahon was the best BYU QB in history and deserves his place,
hopefully before his dementia gets worse.
Dangers of football. Make alot of money but what about life after football? Head
trauma is serious and the long term effects are serious as Jim is now finding
I've been for BYU sticking to its academic rules before putting someone
into the Hall of Fame, but... in that he obviously is not capable of completing
a final credit course, waive that requirement and let him in. BYU must do that
to maintain some dignity on this matter. Do it sooner rather than later.
It's time for BYU to honor him. They are still using his name for PR
Hate to say it but Steve Young is also at great risk for dementia or Alzheimers
given the numerous concussions he had in his career. Such a high price to pay
for a few years of play.
Play baseball instead of football? What makes him think he is that gifted. Quite
frankly I wish he would have played baseball also. And that would be somewhere
on the east coast. I hope BYU sticks to their rule. McMahon has done nothing but
bad mouth BYU all his life.
mohokat: you may want to find out why he's been doing that. He had good
It's time for BYU and McMahon to let bygones be bygones and show some
appreciation for the contributions each made to the success of the other.
Waive the rule and put him in. Not because he has early onset dementia but
because he earned it.
I know several people with dementia. Its not something I would every want to go
through. Many are elderly and have only their memories to comfort them and then
that is gone as well. I know there are medications that seem to help, but they
only work for awhile.
Mohokat:He clearly realizes he wasn't that gifted at baseball because
he wasn't offered a scholarship to play it. However, I remember that Jim
did play baseball at BYU; he just wishes he had been good enough to get school
paid for by playing baseball rather than football. This is nothing to get
worked up about.
As of September 2010 McMahon was 10 credits short of graduation. He has stated
that he would like to earn those credits and graduate. McMahon's feelings
for BYU have improved over the years and he has visited the campus on a couple
of occasions. There are few people in Provo who wouldn't like to see him
graduate and be honored in the Hall of Fame.
There is little dispute given recent research that multiple concussions cause
long term brain trauma and those big time NFL hits have permanently effected a
bunch of great players. That said, I wonder how much of McMahon's dementia
is related to his drinking.
He said he reads a lot. Then in the next paragraph he said when home he sits in
the dark and watches TV only coming out to eat food. What is he reading,
scrolling credits? He definitely is suffering from dementia.
As long as we are talking about player safety, it is about time that if a player
deliberately injures another the injured player should be able to sue for
damages.McMahon suffered one injury that took him out of the game.
The player that hit him said that he was going to take McMahon out of the
game.Throw his butt in jail!
Can't they give him an honorary degree somehow? Problem solved.
This is a real concern for me. My older son quit football after 8th grade
because of an injury, he just didn't want to be beat up and have anything
permanent happen to him. At the time I was not happy about it but can now see he
was wise to do so. Obviously his injury gave him some wisdom. He has only played
baseball during high school and even though he misses football he doesn't
regret his choice. My younger son still plays football and loves it.
Of course it is his choice if he wants to continue, with as much as he loves it
I would be surprised if he quits playing. But my attitude about it has changed
and I'm a football coach. I worry about his health, I worry about the
health of all the boys on my team. The more we learn about things like this the
more it concerns me.
@Ernest t bass. I dont care what his reasons were. He bit the hand that fed him
more than once. Now the bleeding hearts want BYU to compromise the rules and
accomodate Jimmy. The rules are the rules. Abide by them or scrap them. Again I
hope BYU sticks to the rules.
mohokat: And in similar fashion, they (byu) bit the hand that fed them (Mac).
That is the reason he has a strong dislike for that place.
