Maybe a coaching controversy is appropriate.
"BYU now has a coaching controversy on their hands and this column does
nothing more than add fuel to that fire."What's wrong with
that? No media organization has the "duty" to always sing
praises and never give out opinion pieces that could "add fuel to the
fire." If BYU wants to avoid these forms of criticism, THEN STOP
PUTTING OUT GARBAGE like we all saw on Thursday. Poor offense, horrible QB play,
very questionable decisions, bad exposure, etc. If BYU thinks that a 6-7 game
against Boise St. in which BYU's offense again looked completely inept is
the type of exposure that ESPN will continue to broadcast, then they are even
more deceived than I thought. BYU? Put out a better product and the
"exposure" will come.
Doesnt anyone think that, just POSSIBLY, the poor offensive performance had
something to do with Boises dominant defense? I know Boise isnt known for that
kind of D, but they will be soon. I mean, Boise had just as bad of offensive
performance, much attributed to BYUs defense. It was a defensive struggle - in
the SEC those games are called "great".Dont beat your team
up BYU fans. Although, if there ever WAS a time to beat Boise, it was this year.
Youngest team in FBS...
"Doesnt anyone think that, just POSSIBLY, the poor offensive performance had
something to do with Boises dominant defense?"Miami of Ohio
doubled BYU's score. BYU's offense, especially in the run
game, struggled against Weber St. BYU had like 4 fumbles (luckily they recovered
them all) against a pretty average Utah defense (as proven by Arizona St). It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that BYU's
playcalling is pathetic (why are you running the option if your QB is injured. I
mean, DUH!), Riley Nelson isn't a Div I QB, the offensive line is horrible,
and Bronco should NOT have gone for 2 with his defense doing so well and
Boise's FG kicker in the doghouse.
@The Real MaverickSo... Boise had nothing to do with it, huh? Wow.
If thats your attitude, then it's going to be a long 12 years for BYU fans
playing Boise. Excuses, excuses. Like I said, Boises offense was just as
"bad." When two great defenses collide, it becomes a low scoring affair.
When coaches seem to have lost their ability to coach, then discussion is
appropriate. And at least on the offensive side, it appears that they have.
Bronco as it head coach is ulitmately responsible for the efforts of his team.
At some point the defense is going to get sick of carrying the offense and there
will be team discord. Maybe that is a good thing. The defense beating up the
offense in practice as punishment for poor performance is not a bad thing.
Bronco should bench Nelson until his injury heals or he is at least to 95%
instead of 65%.
Ben Hunt,Your optometrist called, your rose colored glasses are
Face it, BYHigh is not a top tier school. How many times have they beaten a team
rated in the top 10 at the time they played them? Bring on Bo Diddly Tech!
BM made a very poor decision going for two points. Boise could not score on his
defense and has no placekicker. Kick the stinking extra point and win the game
on a field goal in OT. So simple a child could see it.
It was not boise game, that was just the straw that broke the camel's
back,The fact is the offense has been very anemic under Bronco
Mendenhall from the beginning,An offense that once was very
prolific, now struggles to score over 40 against lower division teams,BYU has not had, since Detmer, what you could consider a great quarterback,
the current coaches in a hurry to play freshman quatersbacks, In the past one would have to wait until they were a junior and learned
the sophisticated passing game of BYU.BYU has plenty of great talent
on offense, but Bronco's coaches are not developing their potential, nor
have they used junior colleges to fill known needs. There are serious
problems from the O-line coach to the OC.All of which can be fixed
by replacing them with experienced coaches who are not so enamored with the run,
but understand and love BYU's passing game.BYU should, like
other programs, put up over 50 against lesser competition, and paste Utah once
in while, barely beating teams, even good teams, in low scoring
games isn't a badge of honor, but under performing.
Wow Ben. Perhaps you'd like to see newspapers ban all opinion pieces that
might be a little personally uncomfortable? Perhaps we go a bit further and just
ban contrary opinions in general from everyone? People disagree with Coach
Mendenhall's decision in the Boise game because....well.... it was
boneheaded. I like taking risks from time to time and don't mind if a coach
does too and if it fails, I'm careful not to criticize. But in this
particular situation, it was absolutely ridiculous. Vai was correct in his
column and so are many other people. BYU football play & coaching right now
can be characterized as fumbling, bumbling ball (not the defense)- nearly
unwatchable. BYU deserves every word of the criticism it is currently getting.
Speaking of that descision do you know people that play for playstation football
that never no matter what use special teams. Always go for it on 4th and 20 at
there own two or the two point conversion. Worse is those that always get it in
those situations. That won't happen in real life but I know people that
don't seem to think a kicker exists in playstation football.
