When I see a open carried gun, I'm not fearful, I'm kind of annoyed.
If its a handgun at your waste, and you are not a cop then I am AWARE of you,
and aware of my kids moreso than normal. If its a cop, then I'm aware. If
you just bought your rifle at the store, and are carrying in such a manner I
won't be afraid. A handgun at your waste may or may not be loaded,
the person carrying may or may not be loaded as well, lots to consider.I
move on asap. Because nothing increases your chances of being shot like being
around handguns. Its true.
2 Simple Questions1) Is there anyplace that should be off limits to
open OR concealed carry?2) Are there ANY weapons that should not be
permitted?Maybe this will help me to understand what gun advocates,
I would be more concerned with concealed carry. You don't know what kind of
nut is packing. But, why the need to carry at all? The obsession with guns is
Open carry (other than to and from the range/hunting area is more about display
than anything else. You want to carry? Fine. Do so concealed. Open carry
(except in certain limited circumstances) tells me the carrier needs to make a
statement. Concealed carry not only provides more security (you have the
element of surprise) it makes everyone else more comfortable too.
I think the whole open carry thing is similar to buying a great big lifted four
wheel drive pickup truck with giant rims and tires. Legal? yes. But necessary? I
rather think somebody is compensating for something.
People shouldn't need a permit to conceal carry in Utah. The constitution
already covers this. Utah permits should continue to exist to allow carry in
states that require a permit.
NedGrimley,You 100% nailed it.This claim that you need
open-carry so you can walk unmolested into a sporting goods store with your deer
hunting rifle is pathetic. The guys (yes, face it, this is a guy
thing) who want open carry really just love the idea of showing off their...
hardware. Confident, mature people don't need to show it off.
If you've got a CCW, bully for you. Conceal it - We don't
need to see it.
Drew, I find no solace in allowing you to carry around a firearm. Just because
you may behave yourself is no indication that your pal will. I am reminded of
the West Jordan legislator chasing a suspect with a handgun shooting it in the
air like Hop Along Cassidy about 20 years ago causing more danger to his
neighbors than he ever prevented.
If I see a customer in a convenience store packing heat, I leave without making
a purchase. And I question the motives and sanity of the guy with the gun.
If you were really concerned with your defense you would be arguing that you
should be able to wear a full armor suit anywhere you want. Men want
guns to make them feel more powerfull than they are but it never satisfies so
they end up with an arsenal. Scared women might buy one gun and never mention
it, scared men buy 20 and never let anyone forget it.A gun is not a
defensive device. When used as one it fails because it promotes others to go get
an offensive weapon of thier own. Open carry just accelerates the nonsence.Wear a bullet proof jacket. They make new bullet proof clothing from
Brazil that looks like regular clothing and costs a lot less than gun nuts are
spending on thier arsenals. Oh, and your kids won't kill themselves with it
accidentally. My shotgun is great for shooting clays but terrible for
keeping people from breaking in my house. That's what locks, a decent
neighborhood and alarms are for. If someone actually gets in my house - I have
dismally failed my family.
A great arguments for a gun in the homeHaving a gun readily
available will allow me to protect myself when someone intrudes into my house
intent on robbing me. I keep it in a gun safe by my bed.I like to
hunt. I have several rifles which I keep locked in a safe. They are never left
unattended when not locked up.-----Great Scenario for
Concealed carryI am a gun advocate and commonly and discretely carry
my weapon with me. Just in case. No one ever knows that I have it and I never
needed to pull it out. -----Uncommon scenario with
questionable outcome I Carry my gun around so that I can stop mass
murder when someone starts shooting in a crowd.-------More common scenariosI got my loaded gun in the drawer by my bed
for personal protection but my kid found it and shot himself or his friend. It
wasn't locked because I wanted it to be ready.I got my loaded
gun in my closet for personal protection. I was hanging out with my brother in
law and we got into an argument. I got my gun and shot him.
Normally I'm for gun freedom, but in this case I'm not. Open carry
scares people, and for good reason. No everyone is a good citizen. Carrying a
loaded handgun at your waist in open view is my mind just stupid. Carrying a
rifle into a store or hunting isn't open carry at all. You can't
carry a rifle on your waist. There is absolutely no reason that
anyone needs to carry openly. I prefer concealed to keep them guessing.
Open carry in Provo, UT as a deterrent. Giggles...
@Midvaliean"...nothing increases your chances of being shot like
being around handguns. Its true."Being prior military and
currently a police officer, someone who has been around guns for years, carrying
them daily, the real truth is a rifle is more dangerous than a handgun. In
order for the firing pin to hit the bullet, the trigger has to be pulled, which
means in needs to be in a person’s hand with their finger in the trigger
guard. A rifle, simply dropping it can send a round off, depending on several
things, which is too complicated to explain unless you are familiar with rifles,
but most people who own guns don't do this because they know the dangers
for the most part. A handgun is extremely safe when treated with safety and 98%
of the people who own them have no intent to do harm with them. They simply
carry them for protection. If I were you, people who carry handguns, feel at
ease for you are safe. A gun on the waist of a person is an inanimate object
and is no threat to anyone. This is the truth.
boxerdog915,I agree that a rifle is FAR more dangerous than a
handgun but for different reasons. When both are operated correctly, the rifle
is (generally speaking) much more lethal. But the short barrel handiness of the
handgun (the reason we can carry them on our waist) makes them far more prone to
error.Further, I agree that the vast majority of gun owners have no
intent to do harm to anyone. But in my experience, the most capable gun owners
feel no need for display. Those that do feel such a need are trying to prove a
point. And that is what worries me.As to a gun being an inanimate
object. Of course it is. But one created to do a very deadly job.dwayne,Then, if you are in some REALLY dangerous place, I suppose
open carry would make sense. But, the point is the VAST majority of us do not
go walking about in such dangerous circumstances. As to whose choice
it is, that is the point of this discussion, right?
It's wiser to conceal if one has a gun. This way any bad guy is less
prepared.Everyone should have a gun to protect against home
invasion. Everyone should take the time and effort to store and use a gun
It is not wiser to conceal. Many carry openly because they have not yet
obtained a Concealed Firearm Permit, and thus in order to carry they must carry
openly. It is 100% legal to carry openly in this state. It must be Utah
unloaded which means basically two mechanical actions to fire the weapon. You all claim it's better to surprise the criminal. Why?
You've already given him the drop on you if it's hidden, and you have
to uncover to draw. Open carry is a far more effective deterrence than
concealed. And you should never be fearful or wary of an openly carried weapon.
Criminals don't carry openly, they hide them in their pocket until ready
to rob you. An openly carried weapon is one saying "I'm not a threat
to you, only honest citizens carry openly".
Re Zalibde2:19 AM Sept 22, 2012I support your right to open
carry. Me I will continue to conceal carry. If a 'bad guy' sees a
person open carry, the open carry person will be the first person they take out.
The Air Force spends billions to make their airplanes stealthy. They do this
because concealment provides a tactical advantage.I wish you well,
May the Saints preserve us. The gun nuts are at it again.
Article I, Section 6. [Right to bear arms.] The individual right of
the people to keep and bear arms for security and defense of self, family,
others, property, or the state, as well as for other lawful purposes shall not
be infringed; but nothing herein shall prevent the Legislature from defining the
lawful use of arms.
Why would anyone want to carry a firearm open unless he/she is taking it from
the gun store to their vehicle. The first time you want a criminal who has
misjudged you for a victim to see your firearm is about 1 second before he sees
the muzzle flash for the first .... and last time.Open carry invites
