Ahhhh! The sweet smell of independence. Apparently, independence also means
being ESPN's lackey. Playing the late game on Saturday and then having the
short turnaround to play on ESPN's thursday night matchup to soak up as
much of that national limelight as possibly was exactly what they wanted. The
only problem is, after last saturday, they don't look to be up to the task.
This problem isn't the players fault, it was created by the adults who are
in charge who may not have had the firmest grip on reality when they scheduled
these games.Good luck to the Cougs on thursday. If they win they get
all the respect in the world. At least one Bronco is gonna get busted on
Thursday night. I'm betting it's the one that resides in Provo. BYU
wanted to be like their independent big brother Notre Dame. If they don't
win thursday they'll looking more like the other two Army and Navy.
1. I would think that after a tough loss, BYU would be very anxious to get back
on the field. I would look for a very motivated team to go into Boise, even with
the short preparation period.2. The noise problem can be overcome.
BYU was depending too much on verbal queues rather than visual cues. I would be
very surprised if they did the same thing in Bronco stadium.3. If
you are the visiting team, listening to "Utah Man" being played over and
over can drive you insane. This is especially true when the fans keep coming
onto the field to personally sing it to you. After surviving that experience I
would think that BYU could put up with just about anything.I give
the edge to BYU in this one.
A thought about Thursday night games:This would apply to both the pros and
college. After watching the pathetic Packers/Bears game, I came to my
own conclusion that teams shouldn't play on 3-days rest. The solution?
Instead of having a BYE week, it would be included in a Thursday night
scenario. That is, a team with a Thursday night game would NOT play the
Sat/Sun before the Thurs game. This essentially gives them a bye week if you
count the extra days before and after the Thursday night game.If a team is
scheduled to play a week-4 Thursday night game, they don't play week-3 and
then they have a long week until week-5. This allows for a hidden bye week and
allows the players to heal and for more preparation.Having played
college football, there is no way I'd want to play a Sat then a Thurs
game. And because of studying no college should play on Sunday. Getting
home from a long away game at 4 am Sunday morning is bad enough. Getting home
early Monday morning means you miss all your classes for sleep so you can show
up for practice.
