Do remember that public employees in Illinois have been scammed out of their
earned retirement benefits and they aren't eligible for social security
payments, after they retire. The anti-labor attitude in this country will come
back to bite all of us.
Gov. Scott Walker in Wisconsin recognizes what labor refuses to admit, and he
did something about it.In August of 1981 PATCO (Professional Air
Traffic Controllers Organization) decided it might be a good idea to conduct an
illegal strike. President Reagan warned them to go back to work but they
thought he was bluffing. He fired 11,345 of them, and no, the repentant ones
were not allowed to come back to work.
I am somewhat surprised to see a Democrat calling a strike "unnecessary,
avoidable, and wrong".

government worker benefits. Public employees ride the gravy train for 20 years
and then retire so they can double dip.When cities and states are

People always comment that the government is going to go bankrupt if they honor
their promises made to public employees. However, they fail to remember that
during the good times public employees were given promises of future benefits
(pensions) in lieu of raises so money in the coffers could be diverted to pet
projects. Well...it's time to pay the piper and everyone who danced is
Midwest Mom, I am unaware of any public employees getting scammed out of their
pensions in Illinois. It isn't like Enron where the employees are left
without pensions. You see, the taxpayers are the risk backstop and we get stuck
paying for the losses caused by the crooked politicians. No pensioners lost any
benefits in Illinois.And it isn't like Social Security is any
different. The politicians took that pile of money and spent it.The
public sector needs to dial back their wages and benefits to match the real
world. Why should they be immune from the recession?
I'm a teacher and a coach in the public school system. Trust me, with
scant raises, nothing more than 1% in the past eight years I don't think I
am immune from the recession. And trust me the average salary of a Utah teacher
isn't 76K, so I hope the rest of the conservative bloggers that usually don
this blogosphere won't go there on that one...

people who have lost their jobs recently in my immediate neighborhood that would
love to trade you places.We are headed towards a major depression

To Rifleman:None of those people would have traded jobs with Coach P 10
years ago....they were making money hand over fist and couldn't believe
anyone would be stupid enough to teach for so little when there were piles of
cash to be made. Coach P probably made the choice for stability. Stability was
promised...now some want to take it away.

understand is that the private sector is tired of supporting union employee
retirement benefits that far exceed their own.Thank goodness for

Rifleman,Who is asking for special treatment? Shouldn't people
be able to negotiate contracts? I would say, I know this probably makes me a
liberal, but if corporations are people, so are school teachers.

to increase your workday is not appropriate? But union basher's like to
muddy the waters with the money, when this battle isn't over money its over
the way the teachers will be evaluated. They have in essence agreed to the 16%
and the longer work day.It is interesting you want to hold the
current President to every campaign promise he made, but you want to give the
state of Wisconsin a pass on legally negotiated contracts signed by both sides
so that a Governor can pander to the far right by giving a tax break to

@ Fred44The time has come to face reality. In private enterprise
when a company is in financial trouble they lay people off and reduce the
salaries of those who remain. Should public employees be treated
differently?If the money isn't there the union mentality is
that it isn't their problem. I am guessing that you would like these
teachers to be paid for the days they are out on strike.
Teacher evaluations, are a way of shaping teachers into government puppets.
Constant evaluations, ensures you're teaching by state mandates. Bad teachers are a result of this, and it's great that some are speaking
Flying Finn,I will try again, this is not about money even though
the union basher's want to try and make it that way. This is about how
teachers are evaluated. I know the right thinks that any government employee
should just do what they are told and be happy to have a job. We all know that
anyone can teach, and as Rifleman so eloquently put it, they are just public
union employees feeding at the trough. It really amazes me that anyone would
teach in this day and age with the great respect they receive from the public.
@ Fred44There is a problem evaluating the performance of an employee
and rewarding their efforts accordingly? Those who put forth the extra effort
are compensated accordingly. Nothing wrong with that concept. When it comes to
our educations system with its pitiful third world achievements some of these
teachers need to be fired.
