Granger is overrated. You don't barely beat a traditional 4A doormat
(Cyprus) and still be ranked. But where's Stansbury or Pine View in the
rankings? Those two teams are legit. You could even take a look at Roy at 3-0
with a proven great coach and a win over the returning 5A finalist Fremont.
Another team to eyeball is Maple Mountain at 3-0 as well as Layton.
What warrants East at number 1? Doesn't make sense to me.1.
Alta2. East3. Bingham4. Jordan5. Syracuse
Seems about right for me, except for Hurricane
Box Elder shuts out 3 consecutive opponents and draws a 21 ranking behind 1-2
teams and 2-1 teams?Does play on the field not mean much?
Response to UtahUte16Yeah, I'm not sure why East is #1. Beating Pine
View and West, even as dominantly as they did, doesn't really deserve #1,
IMHO. I don't discredit their skill, and I do think they deserve top 5, but
not #1. I too think Alta, based on their accomplishments over Bingham and
Timpview, and how they easily picked apart Olympus (not really bragging rights,
but still a quality win) deserves #1.But from there it gets tough to say.
I think the only think that I would change on your ranks would be Jordan over
Bingham. So, as follows:1. Alta2. East3. Jordan4.
Bingham5. SyracuseAfterall, Bingham has lost a game and, as we know,
Jordan is just one step (or 1 point) behind East in talent.I'm
excited to see Jordan and Alta battle it out in two weeks! As an Alta fan,
I'm curious to see if the Hawks can top the Beatdiggers!
East looks tough, but I think Alta has a better defense. Logan looks
tremendous--whipping a solid Bountiful last week. Most of the poll is legit.
Lone Peak and Mt. Crest should be ranked lower while Sky View is much better
than Timpanogos, Granger, or PG.For those who may doubt the 3A
teams, I'd advise against that trend. I watched those those three teams
and they can play with anybody.
Herriman gave Riverton a great game, but their wins against Highland and Orem
aren't so impressive as both of those programs have taken a step backwards.
@markymarkHave you even seen Hurricane play this year? Until you
have, why don't you just give them the benefit of the doubt because they
are legit. They've beaten 4A and 5A schools the last few years without any
problem, this year being no exception.
Not sure I agree, Whiteshoes. Orem is better than they were a year ago, they
return almost everyone and have a year in the system. Highland lost some good
offensive production but I think that they are actually better defensively than
a year ago, so call it a push. Herriman was flat for most of the game against a
solid Riverton squad, but played much better against a Highland defense that is
not going to give up many points.
@Whiteshoes - Orem and Highland may have taken a step back this year...that may
be why Herriman beat them by 4 and 3 touchdowns respectively.Since
Herriman's creation in 2010, every year there seems to be a trend to
discredit their accomplishments. Other than a bad game against 5A
Riverton...Herriman is right with the Top 5 of this list. Herriman was a small
favorite over Orem and beat them by 28 points. Herriman was a small underdog
against Riverton and lost by 1 point in overtime at a neutral site. Herriman
was a big underdog against Highland and won by 3 touchdowns. In 2010
they were predicted to go 0-10 and found a way to the playoffs...only 5A team to
ever do that in 1st year. 2011 they were predicted to go 5-5 and finished 8-4
going to the playoffs again. This year I hear the same chatter that Herriman is
not one of the elite teams of 4A or of Utah. I disagree. There are teams that
have the ability to beat Herriman. However, Herriman can compete with any team
"The [Northridge] Knights have scored 41, 33 and 41 points in three games,
and there's little doubt who the Region 1 favorite is now."Is it Northridge (ranked #6) or the 3-0 Syracuse team that is ranked #4?
Seems like there is some doubt who the favorite is until these 2 meet on the
field on Sept 28.Also, you list both Jordan and East at 2-0. Never
heard officially but assume that their suspended game never happened? I thought
it had gone down as an East win?
@Parry is a Farce - Northridge and Syracuse are both good teams and you are
probably right...won't be decided until both teams play each other. In regards to the Jordan/East game...it went down as never happened.
The only issue at hand is that the stats still count. So both teams get the
benefit of 3 games worth of stats, but only divided by 2 games. You should see
a big jump in per game stats from all players from East and Jordan. Its odd
though because you would think that you can't separate the two...either you
count the game and the stats or you don't count the game and don't
count the stats. It will be interesting to see if the UHSAA steps in to resolve
the issue. The easiest thing to do would be to count the game, count the stats
and give the win to East.
KnightriderI have seen Hurricane play and think they're legit
at #1 in 3A, at least going into region play. #8 in the state? No way. Do you
seriously think Hurricane would beat Timpview, Woods Cross, Logan, Bountiful, or
Lone Peak--all of which are ranked behind Hurricane? Be content that someone at
the DNews likes Hurricane. Don't try to justify it...just sounds silly.
@fenderHurricane has won (correct me if i'm wrong) 16 straight
games. and haven't lost a home game since 2007 which includes 4A and 5A
teams. obviously they aren't the best in state, but you can't ignore
16 in a row. bigger schools expect higher rankings, Hurricane on the other hand
would prefer to fly under the radar. its smart. we like being smart.pineview on the other hand always seems to cry when they are unranked. dnews
has a love affair with the team in washington. hmphnevertheless lets
enjoy the sport.
@ eagleStansbury beats beats Uintah, Park City and Delta and you
call Cyprus a doormat team? But that makes Stansbury legit? Pine View gets
handled by East then beats Uintah and Orem so that makes them legit also? Your 2
legit teams are basically doormats among doormats! They are where they should
be. Look down. Doormat.
ProudBigBrotherEast has scrimmaged Jordan and Bingham and did not
turnover the football like they did at the game on Friday. East dominated both
of those teams and Alta will not get passed Jordan next week. We will see what
happens, Good luck to all the Teams
Does it really matter what you may think, for who is ranked where and why.
Nobody is gettin any special cookies for being ranked where they are. Most of
all the top ten could contend with each other thats all that means. Let the kids
that play decide each week where thay belong. Until somebody beats any of the
top 10 teams well guess what they will stay right there. Maybe if you suit up
and play they would be ranked higher lol.
Hurricane just scored 42 points against a tough 5A Vegas team (Legacy). They
also beat WJ 28-14 and WJ's second score was against the 2nd team with less
than two min to play. Bingham beat WJ 28-0 so Hurricane is right up there. I
don't think they could handle 4A and 5A teams for a whole season because
they just don't have the depth that these bigger schools have. A couple of
injures would doom them. I think they are top ten worthy if they played any one
of those teams once but in a season no way. Give Hurricane back the transfer
players who went to PV and Dixie then I'd say top ten either way.
IrrelevantLike I said...just sounds silly.
Tiger fanWhy did the 2 boys from Hurricane move over to Dixie? I
have seen these brothers play through the years. They are great athletes and
seem to be great young men.
@FenderI would pick Hurricane over each of those teams. Don't
be a typical PV fan and try and belittle greatness that isn't your team,
even if it is little ole Hurricane. Any other teams playing 4a and 5a teams in
preseason and then top 5 3a teams in regular season and playoffs that have a 16
game winning streak? You just sound silly...
@footballisgood & @bigbenzo88Herriman is impressive. Very, very
good. Deserving. Take your wins where you can get them. What I intended
to convey is that Orem and Highland aren't as good as they have been in
past years. The traditional names to which we have grown accustomed in the past
(Orem, Highland, West, Provo, etc.)
@red rocks"Why did the 2 boys from Hurricane move over to
Dixie?"Because at Hurricane it's not likely either would
have been a starter until his senior year, and maybe not then. The junior
running back would have seen only back up duty for Hurricane this season. Moves
to St George over the summer and now he's a starter for Dixie. The soph QB may not have ever played QB at Hurricane, and if he did, not until
his senior season. At Dixie, he's the JV and varsity backup quarterback
this season and presumptive starting QB next year. That's pretty
much why kids transfer from Hurricane. There's enough athletic talent in
that little town that not all good players get to play the position they want
when they want.
@ SHS85I respect your opinion that Alta will not get past Jordan,
but what facts led to that opinion? Believe me, I know Jordan is good! I expect
a very competative game, but I think Alta may have what it takes, and here is
why:Jordan:Vs Freemont 53-12. Freemont, who was scoreless against
Brighton and Roy, and has very little offensive power, scored two TDs against
Jordan, just before Half and in the 3rd quarter, before Jordan's second
string took over.Vs Layton 56-14. Layton, who has good passing and fair
rushing offense, only fair defense, scored two TDs in the third, again before
second string took over.Vs East 27-28. East, who has a powerfull running
game and good passing game, outscored Jordan after 3 quarters. Point
being, Jordan's defense is their weakness, which Alta can exploit.Alta:Alta has a similary balanced offense to East, being more powerful
on passing rather than rushing. Their defense is solid and getting better with
every game, and it's stronger against the rush, which will help on
Kafentzis.I'm hoping for a reply and look forward to the game!
Go #1 (for now) Hawks!
Based on the quality of the wins and the way that they have done it, Alta should
be #1 in the rankings. I have no problem with East at #2 based on what they have
done so far, but Bingham and most upper tier 5A teams would give them all they
can handle. Jordan should be 2-1 so I would drop them out of the top 5 for now.
Once again, how do you count the stats for a game that adds up to
28-27, but not count the outcome? Let's put it this way - if anyone sets
state records this year based on the bogus stats that were counted Friday night,
I don't see them holding up. George Felt himself posted last week and said
that NEVER in the history of Utah has this been done. (Counting stats but not a
Ive seen them play the last 3 years in a row at the U. I think they should be
about #15. Im not saying there not good, they just wouldn't compete against
the best in 4a and 5a. Skyline and WJ are bottom tier teams.
amanapPine View is by far the best team in 3A. Even the radio coverage
guys say us and Dixie are the best.
@ucepower1Well... if the radio guy ( local I'm sure ) said it, then
it MUST be true. If Pineview can win out and win on the Turf... then Yep, they
are the best. But, 3 games in and a TOUGH region to fight through, I think you
might be a little premature. Best luck to all this weekend !
@ucepower1, if that is your real name.I hope PV gives the Hurricane
rb, I mean PV rb, 51 carries against Hurricane; that would be a fun game. Dixie
is finesse and cowers at Hurricane's physicality and quits by the second
Pine View and Costco are close to each other and a good mix cause Costco sends
out stuff in bulk and Pine View sends home other teams with losses in bulk.
Apparently Hurricane doesn't pass (someone forgot to tell them that this
year) and the sophomore is the next Tom Brady so the parents went shopping for a
school. The sad thing is the Junior is a stud rb and would have benefited
immensely from Hurricane's running game. I don't understand how they
are eligible to transfer without sitting out one year when they went to the
Hurricane coach and threatened they would move if he didn't change to the
spread. They then visited other schools and made it very clear they were moving
to go to a school with a better passing offense. Seems like college rather than
high school. They both are amazing young men and were loved by all the kids at
@ ucepower1I think this week will be big for PV. Are they legit
like there were 5 years ago? Or are they like last years team, and not even
playoff worthy? the PV- Dixie game will be a good indicator of where PV is this
year. Keep in mind Hurricane has beat PV the past three years. PV hasn't
even come close to stopping H-towns wing t offense. Who knows though, this year
could be different. I am excited for region 9 football to start. we have such
a great region. In my opinion i think the region go through H-town or Dixie.
The good thing though is that its not up to us. We will just have to wait and
see what happens. Good luck to region 9 teams!!!and go
@everyone on HurricaneHurricane is the best team in 3A until beaten
period. Doesn't matter who transferred etc.As far as the rankings
goes they are not in the top 10 in the state, their just not deep or good enough
to beat a lot of the 4A and 5A teams ranked behind them. I'm curious to see
if any of the other region 9 schools can compete with them this year, it should

All I know is that I am roasting a pig Saturday after Pine View wins.
@ red rocks For the same reason Prentiss Miller transferred from
Hurricane to Pine View. Hurricane's system, for better or worse, revolves
completely around the team. That means that no player is going to be a 4 year
varsity player. Each standout Running back has exactly 1 year to prove
themselves to college scouts, and that's it. Other region teams are more
willing to play their younger players if they are exceptional athletes.
Hurricane's system is great for the school... but not so much for the
extremely good players.
xxyyzz1100:Stansbury won 9 games last year, won its region title,
has many returning starters and won a playoff game last year. Granger beat
Cyprus who went winless last year. Perhaps Cyprus is improved but how much?
And if Stansbury barely beat those teams you mentioned I might be concerned.
But good teams blow out teams they should beat handily. Granger is 5A and won
several games last year though they faded down the stretch, perhaps suggesting
their true abilities. If they are legitimately this good they should beat a
team like Cyprus handily, not eek one out. I suspect Cyprus might win one or
two games and as harsh as that sounds, that might be a stretch. I suspect that
Stansbury goes at least 8-1 if not finishes its regular season undefeated...
Northridge and Syracuse might have arguments to be #1. Logan is a very good
team and they were handled by Northridge on their home field and trust me
it's hard to handle Logan anywhere, especially on their home field.
Syracuse has been very dominant and has many returning starters. Maybe more
respect is needed for these teams up north...
Where is the Old Sheep farmer from Cedar City that was on here last year? I
would like to hear what he has to say this year about the teams
Since 2008 Hurricane is 51-7(21-3) and have won there last 16 games, Made it to
the last 4 3A Championship games. By the end of the year they could have won 26
games in a row with 61 wins in 5 years thats 12.2 per year and played in 5 title
games in a row, Last team to do that was Skyline 95-99.
@ eagleI agree that Sryacuse and Northridge are kind of the sleeping
giants up north, who have incredible potential, but I don't know that they
are ranked lower than they should be at this point. And I doubt anyone is
looking past them, like Alta did with Syracuse in round one of the playoffs last
year! They are both great programs this year who demand respect and are
deservadly getting it. Syracuse vs Box Elder should be a great game
tomorrow, maybe the game of the week, since they've both been so dominant
thus far, and I expect Northridge to destroy West Lake.
I haven't made a coment because my wife made me move my home to enoch. She
thinks we should be rootin for Canyon View now. I might just pull my home on
back to town if she keeps naggin me about Canyon View.
Okkkkk OkkkkkLets stop all the talk about 5A region 1 teams! Reminder to those up north of Salt Lake.... Davis was your last state
title.... in 2004!8 years its come to teams in the Valley, or Utah
County... Syracuse has played one team from Region 2, 3 or 4, and
either has Northridge.Northridge beat bad Olympus, and bad Kearns!
OO look at for the 3-0 knights!Syracuse beat a bad 4A skyline, a bad 3A
desert hills, and a mediocore Riverton team.Nridge has a solid win
agianst a LOGAN team who didnt have 4 starters and there QB when they played
first game of the season.Syracuse is very tought minded, but well
see agianst BE at weber state. But even then, they will go play in
the weak REGION 1, and beat up on each other then talk about how there the best
and most competitive region in state, and maybe one of them will reach the turf
for the finals again. but lose to either....Jordan, Alta, Bingham
one ofthese 3 teams will win 5A, and East will get another shot at Logan in the
4A title game.Oh and Respect to Hurricane
ucepower1If you want to roast a sheep, I got some I will sell you cheep.
I don't know why you want a pig. They role around in mud all day. Some of
that gotta get in their skin.
Ok Binghamalum let's get facts straight. I am also a Bingham alum. I like
to give props where props are due. This is early on in the season to be getting
all worked up over rankings. In the Logan game the Knights knocked Falk out of
the game with a hard hit, then proceeded to knock the next quarterback out of
the game. They had the whole first half with Falk and while he is a tough
player anyone there in the stands that day will tell you Logan was man-handled
and outplayed by the Knights. Yes Oly and Kearns are weak and the Knights
coasted in both games playing second and third string teams in the fourth
quarters of both games. Up North the players hardly ever cross school boundaries
to play for other teams and yet find a way to go deep into the playoffs and
compete very well against the Junior College recruiting teams in the salt lake
valley. So you can take your recruiting wins we will continue to mind our
business and knock off teams like Alta in the first round of the playoffs ala
2010, and 2011
@binghamalumNo. Region 1 has great contenders. Syracuse beat Alta
last year and Northridge beat them the year before. Both can take on those three
SHS85 toProudBigBrotherNORTH SALT LAKE, UTI
watched the Alta and Bingham game and it was a close game. East Scrimmaged
Jordan and Bingham and Jordan has the better of the two on the Offensive Line.
After the Alta 19-7 win over Riverton, I would have to say Good LUCK with
Jordan. I feel Jordan has the best Offensive Line we played yet this year.GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE TEAMS
@eagleI will say this much to your original post. You say Granger is
5A and should have beaten a doormat team in 4A Cyprus handily just because. The
score doesn't tell the whole story. Mistakes happen and things don't
always go as planned for the team favored in a game. It never should have come
down to OT in that game but things sometimes don't go as planned because of
mistakes and some bad choices. You do know that upsets and "eeked" out
wins happen right? It happens all the time in football in different regions and
on different levels. Just look at the U game last night against USU. I am not
saying Granger is compared to the U but just that the U were favored and should
have won but it went into OT but it should never came down to it. Upsets and
close games happens sometimes. Grangers record last year doesn't suggest
their true abilities this year. Good luck to Cyprus getting 2 wins or more and
Stansbury on going 8-1. Granger? Well you know...
