This sounds good to this old retired teacher.
I think Utah teachers are doing a fine job. Especially given the horrible
priority our leaders have given education with our last in per-pupil
spending.Instead of constantly ripping them, why not talk about
incentives and rewards for the good ones? Instead of running articles on how
some states punish teachers, why not run an article on how some states reward
What is it about "firing" teachers that is so appealing to
conservatives? Why does all job action have to be punitive? What we took an
ineffective teacher and gave them a mentor, some additional training, and tried
to help them become an effective teacher? Being married to a
mentor-teacher in a local school district, I can attest to the value of a good
mentor. My wife has helped save the jobs of several teachers by helping them
become good teachers. Also, a system is in place to fire bad
teacher (at least in Jordan School District). If leaders are too weak to follow
through on the process, which isn't that difficult, then why is that the
fault of the teacher? A good leader leads!
