Three games? Didn't the DUI kid last year only get 1 game? I'm guessing Bleache must have killed at least a few people to warrant 3 games from Whittingham.

He's not really needed in those first 3 scrimmages. Had he started, he would have sat most of the 2nd half anyway.

It'll be a good rest for a great player.

Don't really need him until PAC 12 play begins.

Brian was seen in the company of Max Hall and Reno Mahe thus the severity of the suspension.

The USC game is what matters...........the first 3 clowns that Utah plays..........the Ute "MUSS" could beat them by 21+ points easily. I can't believe that Blechen made such a mistake? What a bone head!

    @SoonerUte

That comment is hilarious! Not really true, but hilarious! That is the kind of confidence I love in a fan. Personally I think we will need all the help we can get against BYU. I hope not, but his presence will likely be felt.

I hate to see that much talent sidelined for 3 games.

What does it take to be suspended from Utah football - armed robbery? No wait - not even that is serious enough.

  • sammyg Springville, UT
    July 30, 2012 4:39 p.m.

Let the kid play. It could not have been that serious of an infraction, for Pete's sake he's a Ute football player.

I (we?) don't want to hear any excuses, especially the whiny kind like after Colorado.

  • Naval Vet Philadelphia, PA
    July 30, 2012 4:44 p.m.

    EdGrady:

He must have been caught holding hands with a girl.

Oh wait.... No, that'll only get you suspended 3 games down there in Provostan.

Maybe it was related to some off-campus affair...like fighting or something...

"He's not really needed in those first 3 scrimmages. Had he started, he would have sat most of the 2nd half anyway."

Another made-to-order whiney excuse for the Utes.

Can't wait to see which one the kids on the hill will break out first - new OC, injury-plagued QB, or key defensive starter sidelined.

You mean like after the 54-10 pasting your boys took after they quit halfway through the 3rd quarter?

    or

After every BCS conference passed your Cougars by?

    or

After your Heisman candidate, national champion winning quarterback who announced his arrival in front of gleeful Cougar "fan" at Iggy's decided to transfer?

    or............

  • Utah-Hawaii Alum Dallas, TX

Blechen was caught buying gasoline in Utah County.......hence his suspension.

Man, I would have really loved to have seen him take Nelson's head off.

Oh well, Star will just have to crush him. Either way, a W in all 3 games.

    Go Utes!

sammyg is probably thinking more like the whiney excuses we heard after

    4th-and-18,

    0-27 versus UNLV,

    Harline is still open,

    George is still running

    the Colorado(3-10) meltdown

    and

I hope he learns from the suspension and comes out fired up against ASU.

    @anti

8th in 2011? Why do you keep parroting false claims? Isn't that against the honor code or something?

Here's some that disagree with you:

"Utah's first season in the Pac-12 went well, thanks to a defense that led the conference in points allowed and finished in the top three in total defense, rush defense and pass efficiency defense. " -- Mike Huguenin (Yahoo Sports)

"Still, the initial verdict is fairly positive. While the grind of Pac-12 play is far different than the Mountain West Conference, it's clear that Utah can compete in the Pac-12. They figure to be a long-term fixture in the South Division race." -- Ted Miller (ESPN)

  • Balan South Jordan, Utah
    July 30, 2012 6:15 p.m.

I suspect that UCLA, ASU, Arizona, Colorado and of course UCLA are also long-term fixtures in the Southern Division. So???

As far a Blechen I wish him well.

Does it really make a difference?

Utah(4-5) LOSING decisively to BOTH California(4-5) 10-34 AND Arizona State(4-5) 14-35, means Utah ONLY finished ahead of Oregon St(3-6), Arizona(2-7), Colorado(2-7), and Washington St(2-7).

    12 - 4 = 8th place

Sorry, you LOSE on head-to-head tie breakers.

    Live with it!

  • CO Ute PARKER, CO

    @17-14 Hurts Don't It?

Just like to point out a couple of things. First, the article is about a very good Utah football player that did something wrong and is going to be suspended for 3 games; not about the PAC 12 conference. If, however, the article was about a conference; someone would need to explain to you that when there are divisions, there are no overall standings. Hence your comment about 6th place is incorrect. Maybe if your team does get in a conferene with two divisions these incorrect statements will be a thing of the past.

  • mussingaround Palo Alto, CA
    July 30, 2012 10:34 p.m.

    CO Ute

Whatever helps you sleep at night.

The Utes still only finished with a better conference record than four PAC 12 teams (one of which U lost to), and you LOST to the two teams that finished with the same 4-5 record as U.

Finishing THIRD in a division that only had two teams that finished with winning records after not playing either of the two best teams in the other division shows just how pathetic Utah's 4-5 PAC 12 record really was.

  • motorbike Cottonwood Heights, UT
    July 30, 2012 10:47 p.m.

Wait, I'm confused ... we were all told ad nauseam that Whittingham cared too much about beating the cougars to have a player suspension last through that game.
    Perhaps 54-10 changed that philosophy???
Where are you on this topic this year coug fans? Are you going to applaud Whittingham for suspending Blechen through the all-important BYU game???

  • SoonerUte Salt Lake City, UT
    July 30, 2012 10:49 p.m.

Dnquixote says "Personally I think we will need all the help we can get against BYU."

That depends if you think last year was a fluke or a trend. If these were Mountain West days, then losing a starter for the first 3 games would hurt. It's not boastful, just fact, that Utah has improved recruiting and depth. The suspension is an opportunity for other players to step up and show what they have. Plus, the suspension is known now, not a few days before a game, so they have all off fall camp to prepare.

    0-27 versus UNLV,...Harline is still open,...George is still running,...the Colorado(3-10) meltdown..."

Don't go there. NOBODY is guilty of more excuse making than the Indy-WACers. You whine about blown calls, 8 and 7 turnover games, Robert Anae, Freshman jitters, field conditions [on your OWN field no less, and one that didn't stop FSU from scoring 50+ pts on YOU], and you love to cling to "they didn't beat us, we beat ourselves" nonsense.

54-10. Blame your players for quitting in the 2nd half.

  • Naval Vet Philadelphia, PA

    anti BCS:

"you LOSE on head-to-head tie breakers"

Not so my frantic and emotional little brother. Because there WAS no tie breaker for 3rd in the Pac-12 South. The ONLY tie breaker rule that applies is when determining who would play in the CCG should teams tie for 1st in their respective divisions. But Oregon won the North division outright, and UCLA was the outright winner of the South.

And, for what it's worth, ASU played in the Las Vegas Bowl. That's a lower tiered bowl game than the Sun, so Las Vegas picks AFTER the Sun. Does the Sun Bowl pick the "8th-place" Pac-12 team? Nope. They pick after the Rose, Alamo, and Holiday. Don't be so frantic and emotional.

Sorry. You lose the head-to-head argument. No tie breaking rules need apply.

    mussingaround:

"The Utes still only finished with a better conference record than four PAC 12 teams..."

The Utes ALSO finished behind only 5 teams with better conference records. You're so desperate to pin 8th on Utah, but you know it's in vain.

54-10, and your boys quit. Haha!

  • mussingaround Palo Alto, CA
    July 30, 2012 11:31 p.m.

Grasping at straws, Navel Vet, grasping at straws.

The Utes may have finished with the 6th best conference record, but the Utes were beaten badly by the two teams that they tied with. Any way you slice it, the Utes finished behind 7 other teams in overall conference record, third in the worst division of the conference.

The usual characters are out in force, taking shots at Utah. BYU fans can play connect the dots, and use the Colorado game as an out; but losing 54-10 at home is the trump card. Ouch.

As far as Blechen goes, the first 3 games are certainly the ones to miss. I wonder what he actually did?

  • Brave Sir Robin San Diego, CA

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    July 31, 2012 9:57 a.m.

I won't be surprised when this "suspension" is shortened by a game or two with a proclomation from whittingham that blechen "has fullfilled all the requirements" to be re-instated. And I won't have a problem with that either. If the coach feels he did what he was supposed to do to come back then that is up to the coach.

  • Jeff29 Cedar City, UT

The difference between Utah and BYU fans:

A BYU player gets suspended and the majority of BYU fans discuss the issue that got the kid in trouble and their hopes that he can get his life back on track.

A Utah player gets suspended and the majority of Utah fans discuss the fact that he won't be missed on the field with no regard for what might actually be wrong in the kids life.

  • RockOn Spanish Fork, UT
    July 31, 2012 11:59 a.m.

Too bad about this kid. Hope Brian gets things right. He's a very good football player, but, football is down the list on important things in life. Kyle W. has sent him and everyone else the proper signal.

More than that, hope the poster on these sites ever grow up. It's an article about a young man's life and you guys degenerate into a pathetic name calling exhibition.

  • Brave Sir Robin San Diego, CA
    July 31, 2012 1:13 p.m.

    @Jeff29

Eh, not exactly. It's more like, "thanks to pressure from fans/boosters, a BYU player gets suspended right after the season (even though the team found out about the offense in September) and is suspended through spring practice, then conveniently reinstated just in time for fall camp."

  • jarka-rus Layton, Utah

  • alternate Salt Lake City, UT

Wow! A story about a difficult time for young man, and it turns into a a creativity contest to determine who can say "I hate your school" the best. Sad commentary.

Give me a break, Utah will definitely miss this young man those first three games. He is the heart of the defense. But, this story should be about him and I would think words of support should be the theme of these comments not the trash talk that we are reading.

We all know that Utah beat BYU and lost to Colorado. We all know that BYU lost to Utah and then made a change and had success. But know what, that was last year. Over, done, finished.

Final words, best wishes Brian, you can get through this! You need to be on the field!

  • Naval Vet Philadelphia, PA

    mussingaround:

"Grasping at straws, Navel Vet, grasping at straws...Any way you slice it, the Utes finished behind 7 other teams in overall conference record..."

Nope. I'm not the one inventing alternate realities in order to desperately make Utah's 2011 season less successful. The truth it, "anyway you slice it, the Utes finished behind" FIVE other teams in overall conference record. FIVE; not seven. Furthermore, at 8-5, your big brother finished with a worse overall season record than only THREE other Pac-12 teams.

PLUS, we pounded YOUR mid-majorey WAC-wannabes 54-10, watched your boys quit, and witnessed your fans' frantic 3rd Qtr scramble to your stadium's exits. There really is no comeback for this comment. Period.
