"retaining a title and remaining a shareholder in an organization is
entirely appropriate, even when you step away from day-to-day operations"The SEC filings show that Romney was the CEO and "sole
shareholder" of Bain. That's quite different from what you describe.
Romney has been deceitful, but I guess in your partisanship, ethics go out the
Of course he was working on the Olympics. That's not the issue. The issue is was Romney profiting from Bain when the company was pioneering
the off-shoring of jobs. Again, this is all legal and appropriate for business
to shun American workers for profit. We're told by business schools that
this is the appropriate role of businesses and "job creators."The issue is will Americans in mass tolerate an American President who has
dodged taxes and shipped jobs overseas. I think not.
Let me just add to the above that DN the issue is not wheter Romneys'
wealth. It's how he got it and what he's done with it. It's
also not whether what he has done is legal (although, even some of his own
advisors admit that some of his actions have just never been tested). The
question is first of all are his actions those of someone "who knows how to
create jobs", or are they just the actions of someone who knows how to
create wealth..for himself? Secondly the question is do the American people who
by in large make wages and pay taxes on those wages, want a President who touts
a love for country and American excetionalism yet engages the laws of numerous
foreign countries to avoid paying taxes..the very monies needed to run the
country he loves, and enrich himself personally?
Just in... Romney's man answered this question "He retired in 2002
retroactive to 1999." No kidding, this is his newest excuse. Obama doesn't have to make up lies, Romney is incapable of owning
up to anything he's ever done, Egotistical, Extreme wealth, and No
permanent stance on anything, makes him a hard "horse" to back.
First Romney TV ad blasts Obama - Mercedes White - Deseret news - 11/22/11 Critics say the ad uses some of the Obama clips out of context,
especially when the president says "If we keep talking about the economy, we
are going to lose." It appears that in that instance, Obama was quoting an
aide to then-2008 opponent Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who had used those words
anonymously in an interview. That might be beside the point though
The accusation that Romney committed a felony is rhetorical. The point is to
emphasize that while Romney was working on the Olympics, he was in fact still
the CEO of Bain (Does anybody think his tax returns would show that Bain
didn't pay Romney those years?). Even if he didn't
personally orchestrate the outsourcing that Bain implemented, he profited from
it. Surely the decisions his subordinates made were the ones they thought
Romney would have made he been running things day-to-day. Since he was in fact
the CEO, he ought to take responsibility for what his company did.
Romney’s failure to do so is the preceding cynical exercise in partisan
When Romney ran for governor he was challenged about not living in the state and
thus not being a legal resident. This would have disqualified him from being
governor. He testified under oath, that, while running the Olympics, he
frequently returned to Mass. to attend board meetings. The ones he was not able
to attend in person, he attended via conference call. Even his campaign says
that he retired in 2002, retroactive to 1999.
Deseret News:"The president has claimed that Romney either lied to the
SEC, which would constitute a felony, or that he really was still working for
Bain during those critical three years."Did Obama say that? Or
did someone on his campaign staff say that? Fact:Stephanie
Cutter (deputy campaign manager)“Either Mitt Romney, through his own
words and his own signature, was misrepresenting his position at Bain to the
SEC, which is a felony, "Or, he was misrepresenting his position at Bain to
the American people to avoid responsibility for some of the consequences of his
investments,” including layoffs and the outsourcing of jobs.To
Deseret News, Maybe you should report it accurately when you are calling
someone to task for misrepresentation. We can then debate to what
extent people are responsible for the words/deeds/business decisions when they
hold a position of authority.
Rarely are campaign attacks other than partisan politics. Nobody exemplifies
this better than the Romney campaign. Romney might be well ahead in the polls
had his campaign gone with counter-intuitive honesty: the financial crisis and
recession was such that all presidential action was doomed to disappointment or
failure (with the possible exception of a larger stimulus and a bipartisan
congress more interested in America than partisan politics); that the recession
was doomed to as long and as bad as it has regardless; and that Romney has no
experience creating the demand and the spending that drives job growth. And that
political honesty, like all honesty, is a moral issue. For some
reason, transparent political dishonesty wears worse on some people than others.
The Republican candidate should be well ahead in the polls even now and a slam
dunk in November.

The real issue here is whether Mitt had a hand in running Bain during the the
years 1999 to 2002. In some circles Mitt has gained a reputation for playing
fast and loose with the facts. Obama is playing on this perception by pointing
out factual discrepancies in Romney's narrative, and it is up to the
voting public to decide if these details are important.
Re Truthseeker are you really suggesting that the President is not responsible
for the accusations of his Deputy Campaign Manager? Romney relinquished day to
day operational control of Bain in 1999. He made money off of Bain operations
after that, and to promote and provide a transition period for the Company he
retain majority share control and title through 2002. He did not violate laws,
but he did maneuver around laws to accomplish his objectives. So, he was not
directly in charge of the decisions to out source the jobs, but did profit to
extent the decisions were profitably from the Bain out sourcing decisions.
Making this an issue shows those making the accusations(this Administration and
some posting hereon) either cynicism and complete partisanship in the vain
attempt to retain power or the complete naivety of how business works.
Appropriate outsourcing preserves companies to continue to pay taxes, preserves
and adds jobs that are competitive to be performed in the US, and allows the
Company to be profitable against the open market competition from all over the
world that is allowed in this country, which reduces the price of goods and
services that Americans buy.
Yes, we all understand. The Deseret News supports Romney. We get it.
Stephanie Cutter speaking with Wolf Blitzer:“we’re not
accusing Mitt Romney of committing a crime here; we’re actually saying
that he’s misrepresenting his time at Bain to the American people.”
She cited reports from independent news sources showing Romney received a salary
and appeared in promotional materials for Bain during a time he has described as
being his leave of absence from the company. His explanation, she added, simply
“doesn’t add up.” The Boston Herald on February
12, 1999 reported, "Romney said he will stay on as a part-timer with Bain,
providing input on investment and key personnel decisions." A Bain press
release issued on July 19, 1999, noted that Romney was "currently on a
part-time leave of absence"—and quoted Romney speaking for Bain
Capital. So which Romney statement is accurate? Did he
"retire" from Bain in 1999 or was it a part-time leave of absence? Since the Romney campaign and Bain have declined to provide documentary
materials that could shed light on the extent of Romney's role after 1999,
we are left with Romney and Bain's contradictory statements.
So VST, 80,000 jobs is a "mere" and Keyensian economics is a grand
experiement. Just how have the countries done that tried cost cutting and
deficit reduction alone..headline yesterday..England has slipped back into a
worse recession than first thought. That means no economic growth, and no jobs.
We look pretty good and quite brilliant compared to a second recession.
I have to laugh here. People are complaining about Romney making money when his
company sent jobs overseas, yet I would imagine that many of those same
complainers are invested in mutual funds which have stocks in foreign companies.
Why is it ok for you liberals to make money while shipping jobs overseas, yet
it isn't ok for Romney? Also, why are you not complaining that
Obama used stimulus funds on many companies that outsourced jobs overseas? You
only complain about Romney doing this, yet are silent on Obama?
"Let's assess. So far on his three-nation tour, Romney has taken heat
for criticizing Britain's ability to host the games, scheduling posh
fundraisers with Barclays executives tied to the LIBOR interest-rate fixing
scandal, and for a racist boast made by an adviser that Romney shares more of an
"Anglo-Saxon heritage" with Great Britain than does President Obama. Do
you think this trip will prove Romney has the foreign policy chops to be
The issue is not so much where Romney was during the Olympics but rather how can
Romney, in light of conflicting documentation, support his statements where he
wasn't during 1999 to 2002. If Romney had no responsibilities where is the
paper work to show who was the new or acting CEO of Bain and the acting Chairman
of the Board. Where is the tax returns to show exactly what his salary and or
other earnings from Bain. Failure to provide full disclosure allow negative
perceptions to grow.
In your eagerness to promote Mitt Romney's candidacy you seem to have
forgotten that most of the work on the Olympics was done by Tom Welch and Dave
Johnson whose criminal charges were thrown out of court. Isn't it time to
quit dragging their hard work through the mud with careless characterization of
their work as a "mess of corruption?" They were exonerated.
@Roland.. you're starting to sound like a "birther". Panic setting
in I guess. This whole topic is just funny. How many private sector investments
has Romney made? Numerous. What was the President's only major private
sector investment? Oh yeah- when he purchased his home in Chicago bleow market
value with the help of convicted felon Tony Rezko. Nice. And we're
discussing whether Mitt Romney was actually running "the evil Bain
capital" during the SLC Winter Olympics and whether or not he's a
felon. How low can we go?
VST, and where did I say you said we should cut costs. What I said was the
Keyensian tactics of stimulus did in fact work compared to the countries that
tried austarity. Even zero growth is not a recession..England is in a second
recession after forsaking Keyensian stimulus and are now going back to it. Fact
is there is much wrong with our economy and a keyensian stimulus will not fix
what is wrong..nor will incenting companies. Seys law of build it and they will
come was long ago discredited. We have a demand problem not a supply problem.
Until we can fix demand we will not pull out of this crisis. Stimuls
doesn't fix demand it shores it up until a fix can be effected. Enter the
Republicans who will block any..any..any attempt at long term solutions. Summary; stimulus doesn't fix it shores up business incentives do
Well if Romney gets elected I hope he works on his foreign relations. On his
visit to the UK he has managed to offend the entire nation with his comments
about the Olympics. Every single paper and news site here are attacking him,
even the right wing ones. He has of course back tracked on his earlier comments.
I thought our politicians were bad....
Politics is partisan by definition.
Thank goodness that the Republican Party strategists decided to vilify and
de-legitimize Barack Obama before he was sworn-in as President of the United
States. They decided his term would be both "dangerous to America and an
abject failure" long before he assumed office. Mitch McConnell's call
to make Obama a one-term president, Rush Limbaugh's call for Republicans
not to cooperate with Obama under any circumstances, and the general move on the
Right to demonize and paint Obama as "The Other" have been fortuitous
for the Romney campaign. If not for the success of these efforts,
Romney would have marginalized and he would become the "Bob Dole
non-candidate" of 2012. This only confirms the value of a non-stop barrage
of negative propaganda. Instead, it doesn't matter what he
says or does, those who will vote for Romney will do so because they have
learned that Obama needs to be replaced regardless of who replaces him. So the
poll numbers continue to show Romney in a dead-even race thanks to his money,
his organization, and the animosity built up among the Republicans and those
hoping to profit from a Romney administration.
The issue is that Romney is running on his business experience at Bain. But
when reporters started pointing out that such experience included laying people
off and shipping jobs overseas, then Romney claimed that he was no longer at
Bain when this happened.Except that journalists did some digging and
found that Romney still held the title of CEO, received a salary from Bain, and
travelled back to Massachusetts and participated in meetings. It
would have been nice if the Deseret News had painted a full picture of the issue
rather than omitting the inconvenient facts. If Romney wants Bain
to be his calling card, then he has to accept responsibility for Bain's
actions, both the good and the bad.
Romney's whereabouts...In 1999 Romney was hired as President
and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics and
Paralympics. Romney was elected Governor of Massachusetts in
2002.Romney was working in SLC from 1999 until 2002.How
did he qualify for the residency requirement to become the Gov. of Mass.?
when was the last time you heard Barack talk about his economy? When was the
last time you heard Barack explain his "plan" for the next 4 years? Does
anyone know what his plan is - the one to revive our economy? So as you stand in
the unemployment line and stare at 8.2% unemployment or you apply for your 100th
job or while you struggle to keep your business's head above water and you
fear the coming Obama taxes and regulations that will most likely sink your
business .... are you comforted by Barack's attacks against Romney? Does
Barack's crafty little commercials give you hope ... or do they just
nauseate you? When is enough .. enough? Will Barack's rhetoric cause
business to grow in 2013 or slow down even more? Are you prepared to accept more
business slow down - higher unemployment - less possibilities? Does
"fairness" give you comfort or do you see through this political
nonsense and understand at the end of the day Barack can't help you. Are
you SICK of Barack Hussin Obama and his socialist game plan??? You CAN do
something about it!!
His tax returns will make his case.
