    So I invest several million dollars, fund the development of a programming environment, and because it is so cool that others want to use it, they can go ahead and take the methods developed in it and use them freely. An API is a method - a way of processes data. If my APIs are no longer protected, only the stuff I build on top of or leverage them, the argument is that this will increase the innovation.

    Are you kidding me!

    What you will see is more and more black boxed environments, where how you interact with them will be very limited. No one will want to expose their work to poaching. Reverse engineered apps will be everywhere since only the mothod is protected, not what they do.

    I wonder if this will also apply to derived works in movies and music.
