This short article contains astute observations that should be of extreme
concern to all of us. Parents are the ones who can make a difference, but it
requires vigilant diligence because of the influences teens are exposed to
all the time. As a grandparent, I don't know how to help grandchildren with
this challenge. Teaching teens of the dangers of pornography can be achieved
more effectively when strong connected fathers are present.
Maybe it just gets harped on a little too much. People, including teens, need to
be prepared to deal with reality as it is instead of existing in the utah
insular cocoon and suddenly finding themselves unable to cope. I think the kids
are, mostly, alright and more able to cope than they are given credit for.
I wish I had the eloquence and powers of persuasion sufficient to persuade our
youth that I know the ravages of pornography are destructive to a family's
life. Given enough years of observation and personal experiences with close
extended family members, none of them would contend there are no dangers, nor
would they say they don't care. Lives are ruined, patterns are replicated
and passed on into generations that follow. The ripples in the pond stretch out
for years. Those who contend there are no victims of pornography have simply not
collected enough samples to make an intelligent conclusion. "Eat, drink and
be merry" is a deeply entrenched satanic notion, and such a philosophy has
gained a strong foothold in today's youth, as evidenced by the letter
writer's observations. One can say sex and marriage are only momentary
passing pleasures, but those who cannot or will not discern how such an attitude
is destructive have likely already succumbed to the numbing influences of
pornography addiction. The price exchanged for the indulgence is far too high
for society, families and individuals to pay, and the piper will always insist
on payment in full someday. Just not today.
I would like it if someone could make anti-pornography PSA's Whatever
happened to all of those anti-drug PSA's that we saw on television during
the 80's and 90's. I don't think people really realize what
pronography can do to your marriage and personal life. If they hear an anonymous
interview about how someones marriage was ruined by prongraphy after they bacame
a registered sex offender,it may wake some people up to the reality of the whole
The children who skipped this assembly were obviously the most intelligent
children in the school and are those least likely to engage in porn.We know from our legislature that educating children about things like sex
makes them more likely to engage in it. Obviously educating children about porn
will also make them more likely to engage in it.I cannot believe our
schools are promoting porn like this! Why weren't the parents given the
option of opting their kids out of this harmful assembly?
Sarah Cannon,You made a good, but sad point about the ever-changing state
of the world at this time. It is indeed regretful that pornography has become so
prevalent in our time. I would like to point out one thing, however. YOU are a
teenager, and YOU care. If you didn't care, why would you be writing about
the problem? And if you care, who is to say how many other "teenagers"
are there in the shadows, caring just as much as you do? If teenagers don't
care, I assert that it is because, in the sinews of our culture, they are not
expected to care. Just think of the kind of marketing directed at this supposed
"vacation period" between childhood and adulthood. If those expectations
are raised, the youth can and will rise to it, just as you have. As Paul said:
"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought
as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." (1
Corinthians 13:11) Thank you for speaking your mind.
Close the Campus. Have you ever heard of being taken to the assembly as a Class
and if you are not there you get and F plus have a Pop Quiz the next day. A
school day is like a job you just do not up and leave it. Parents need to parent
and the School needs to Administer the rules and programs. However
the kid is right it is most likely useless. because of follow through or lack
there of. However just because its useless does not mean you don't attend.
You go as a Class Teacher does Roll Call and you stay, listening is optional Again its not the Porn its the reaction to the Porn that destroys
relationships. Marriage is considered short term because of No Fault
Divorce for just about anything. Kids often see the truth in things
that adults would very much like to hide. If you do one thing and say another
kids hear, see, and act accordingly. Also you should not lump kids
into any demographic and say all kids.
School time should be used for teaching not for propaganda. This is a waste of
my tax dollars. As is often said in these comments, children should learn about
sex at home not at school.
@ awsomeron: Marriage is considered short term and optional because for the
last 30 years we have been told the only people who need to get married are
those who are going to have children. Not very many teenagers are
focused on childbearing - especially when we torment them about parenthood by
making them raise eggs.
