The WAC still has several basketball schools. Seattle, Idaho, Boise St (FB to
Big East), Denver and New Mexico St. This conference can survive. It could
even remain as a FBS conference. Pull in Montana, Montana St and Portland St as
full members. Tell UVU that they can join as a full member if they add FB (they
will). Pull in Cal-Davis, Cal Poly and Sacramento St as FB only members (SacSt
sends its Oly sports to the Big West with CSBakersfield for a 12 team league).
And finally add Grand Canyon University out of Phoenix as an Oly member. You
have 9 FB teams and 10 all-sports teams in a travel friendly conference (no
travel to Hawaii, Texas or Louisiana) that has schools in some of the larger
non-Cali TV markets in the west.
The WAC was the best thing to ever happen to BYU football. The cougs have done
nothing since the WAC dissolved. College football has changed after BYU made a
mockery of the system by beating 12 nobodies. Most byu fans long for
those days of being the big fish in a very small pond. At least they were known
by a few and were significant back in the late 70's, all of the 80's
and a few moments in the 90's. Sigh. Those were the days.
@ IndeMak,You are absolutely correct in your assessment sir. BYU is
about winning, regardless of who they play. However, I know quite a few lifelong
Cougar fans that haven't renewed their season tickets. Playing Idaho and
NMSU in November every other year at LES isn't very entertaining, even to
diehard BYU fans. The clock is ticking for their football program down south.
"There's almost a fear of being left out or left behind as conferences
reconfigure."Yep. Just ask the Indy-WACers.Utah-Hawaii Alum:"BYU is about winning, regardless of who they
play."I wouldn't say "regardless of who they play".
Who they've played has been integral to the number of 10-win seasons
they're oft to boast. The cougars rely heavily on weak-WAC, C-USA, FCS,
and traditionally woeful teams from AQ conferences. Their opponents have been
very carefully selected for just that purpose. "The model has been
set"....just like Bronco said. Remember?
Vet. And the model has been set for the Ute's as well. Join the PAC, kiss
BCS games goodbye. Compete with thebuffs for last place. Works for me.
Yerffoegn:Well we've only played ONE season in the Pac-12, and
have never come near competing with the Buffs on the gridiron for last place, so
it doesn't look like it's been working out very well for you afterall,
has it? And with 18 returning starters from last season's 6th-place
finish, an increase in position depth, and an array of preseason prognosticators
predicting anywhere from a 3rd to 5th place finish THIS season, you could be in
for some dark days ahead. How devastating for you.Has the Big 12
called yet? [*snicker*] Because it looks like we can add Florida St. to the
list of teams [i.e. Notre Dame, Louisville, and Cincinnati] who are AHEAD of you
in line for their final TWO spots. Best you pack your raincoat, because cougar
tears will rain down like a monsoon. And with the WAC gone after this season,
you're going to have a hard time finding anybody left to play with you.
Haha! Mid-majors forever.
