Manti locked up the All-Sports award today. Football in the fall, Boys Soccer
and Tennis and Girls Softball today. Manti is easily the class of 2A. Great job
Templars! Let the "only because they're the biggest school in 2A"
I would like to know what Manti's enrollment is compared to some of the
smaller 2A schools. If Manticoug doesn't think that numbers matter in the
smaller divisions then go ahead and pat yourself on the back for besting schools
with 1/3 the enrollment.
JParkerfan, fyi, Manti has an enrollment of 401, grades 10-12, Enterprise 179
and San Juan 297. So San Juan & Enterprise did very well based on the
numbers. Manti played lots of teams this year twice there size and did very
well, but they lost a good share of them. I peaked my own interest,
Manti was 0-9 against 3A Teams, most of the 3A school would have been less than
twice there size with the exception of Snow Canyon, which is 3 times the size of
Manti. So based upon this data one might conclude SIZE does matter.
So I guess you could say out of the 401 students at the high school, Manti had
29 girls try out for the softball team (9-12th grades). This was the largest
group of girls that has tried out for the team since softball began. The coaches
ended up keeping 14 freshman, which many normally would not have been kept in
previous years. Manti lost 7 starters last year, so this championship win was
great figuring it was a "new" team playing other than two returning
starters. Being that it was a new team, it took quite a while (the majority of
the year) to get these girls to play to their potential. Luckily, the team
peaked at the right time. The girls were excited to beat some great teams to win
the championship. Congrats Manti on your state championship, it was
fun to watch you play a great state tournament!
I wasn't specifically addressing softball as much as I was addressing the
All-sports award. Manti, Richfield are at a huge advantage when competing
against smaller schools in the 2A division. Enterprise and Kanab for instance
have difficult time even fielding a football team and the kids have to play
both ways. This isn't as big of a deal in 3A,4A, and 5A as there are more
kids, so to congratulate yourself for having a borderline 3A school competing
against small schools seems a little bit of a "reach."By the
way Snow Canyons enrollment is 1050. Not exactly 3x Manti's. Put them
against a school like SC with more than double the enrollment and see what they
can compete in.Football--no, Basketball--no, Softball--no, Baseball--no,
Manti & Richfield should not be 2A schools their 9-12 enrollments are 560
& 592. They have a huge advantage against most 2A schools in every sport.
Manti never did much in any sports until they grew and were one of the biggest
2A schools. Funny thing is Delta has 589 9-12 and somehow got the shaft, they
must not have buttered Cuff enought. Bottom line is Manti & Richfield
should be moved back to 3A. As it has been said before Manti was 0-9 against 3A
schools so it makes a huge difference to drop down a classification and win
Just to clarify...Manti did lose to 7 3A,Beat 1 4A, (Cyprus), Beat Taylorsville
5A, Lost to Hunter (5A) Syracuse (5A) Lone Peak (5A) and defeated West (5A). All
the while playing the JV squad plus 4 seniors. There are several squads playing
in 2A with multiple Sophomores. Is it fair that a team with many Seniors compete
with those younger teams?? Absoloutely. Give the teams some credit, not because
of the numbers enrolled, but the programs that exist continually to better the
athletes. Cudos to the programs excelling with smaller enrollment..
(Enterprise)..And thanks to the off season people as well as Coaches that donate
time and energy to help these kids compete at higher levels. Quit complaining
and get involved to better the programs that exist once the season ends.
Remember...It's not the size of the Dawg in the fight..It's the size
of the fight in the dawg.
Rosedawg:I don't see anyone complaining except you complaining
about the complainers. My point is about the fact that the Manti fan is basking
in the glory of the school's athletic prowess, and I just pointed out the
fact about the size of the schools involved in 2A.
Ok, so what do you say about Millard wrestling, they kick the snot out of
everyone, they are one of the smallest schools in 2A, I suppose they are just
lucky and there is nothing to be said about them building a program. Don't
dis-credit what the kids and coaches at Manti have done, a lot of great coaching
and development of players have gone into the championships.
No one is saying that Manti doesn't have a good program. They are just
saying that they should be in 3A. Delta did get the shaft. They don't
have an alternative school to move students to. Manti and Richfield should both
be in 3A with Delta. Its the schools with 1000 kids that need to be in 4A. So
Manti can't compete with schools their own size but can beat schools half
their size. Big deal.
None of you know what a disadvantage is until you play schools that don't
have to play both ways in football to the smaller 3A teams who do. Everyone in
2a now plays most players both ways including Manti. And 500 more students is a
much bigger deal than 200 more students. If you look at who wins the football
title in football its about 50/50 between the bigger and smaller schools in 2a,
but in 3a its the bigger schools every year. Manti used to be the smallest 2a
school a while back and I don't ever remember complaining when we lost to
Lehi and the bigger schools back then. And Manti was competitive in 3a those 2
years especially in softball. The state needs to go to 6 classifications in
everything because you guys are half right right the smaller 3a schools are the
ones who are getting the shaft but not the smaller 2a schools. There's
always going to be bigger and smaller in every classification no matter what.
