Gun control is not the answer to gun violence, and only makes the problem worse,
because it disarms the law-abiding. Yes, the Eyres called attention to a
serious problem, but their recommended answer (more gun control) is exactly
When will the words "well-regulated" become part of the discussion?
Severest? Shouldn't that be "most severe"?
The Eyre's have shown great courage in standing up for what is right, even
though it is an unpopular cause in this State. But right is right, whether
popular or not.The legislature believes that the best way to prevent
crime is to arm every man, woman, and child in this State. This is so laughable
as to be astounding. Anyone with any logic knows that societies with more guns
have more violence. The Eyre's should be commended for taking a
stand against violence. Hopefully, more will do so before we devolve into a
lawless anarchy plagued by freelance gunslingers.
The murder rate today has fallen to half of what it was at its peak from the
late seventies through the early nineties. It is actually back down to the level
of 1960. Obviously any murder is one too many, but we've made remarkable
progress. We still have quite a ways to go though, the murder rate
in much of Western Europe is 75% lower than ours, although ours has always been
considerably higher. It is estimated that a resident of Western Europe today has
the lowest chance of dying a violent death out of all humans that have ever
Gun control is not an answer to gun violence? Are you kidding me? Of course it
is. It may not be the only response, but it is important. That's like
saying, let's make pornography available to all so it cuts down on the
problems associated with pornography. Duh!
The Eyres are probably sincere in their desire to help us all improve in the way
we handle challenges, parenting and other aspects of life, but they are way off
base in thinking "gun control" will help. A population of individuals
with better self-control would help, and that is the real issue.
Speaking of well-respected opinions, remember Paul Harvey? He was a radio
commentator who had a daily news and commentary show followed faithfully by
millions and millions of listeners. If you want to read what he had to say about
gun control, google "Paul Harvey gun control facts".After
you read his message on the results of 20th Century gun control, who has
historically implemented gun control, and what resulted in that gun control,
then you come back here and post your honest response about gun control. Gun control to keep guns inaccessible to the criminal is just a dream,
and will only infringe upon the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.
I do concede that MUCH more needs to be implemented to identify and
help the mentally unstable members of our society, and our youth, . . . who are
so easily influenced by the media, . . .who then lash out violently, be that
with guns or with knives or with rocks. Paul Harvey also gives about
a dozen reasons why our society is in such turmoil, and why so many turn to
violence. Our violent society did not come about because of guns.
