It's nice to see our friends up north finally getting facilities as nice as BYU has had for years. When are the Utes going to expand that cracker-box sized stadium of theirs to big boy size?

It's nice to see a sports front page story about the Utes....look directly to the right and count how many BYU stories there are....and the Des News claims to be "fair and balanced?"

"When are the Utes going to expand that cracker-box sized stadium of theirs to big boy size?"

Really? Attendance smack or stadium size is being brought up again??? That's all you got?
Well it's a good thing that the Y has a big stadium. Got to have room for all those screaming kids and elderly folks. Because that's at least 35% of it...weak!!

    ThomasJefferson -

"And who exactly is paying for this?"

    - Donor dollars and Pac 12 money. Any other questions?

    Riddles -

"When are the Utes going to expand that cracker-box sized stadium of theirs to big boy size?"

    - I'm not sure when the Utes will expand their stadium but the days of your cougars winning games there are probably over. You might want to turn your attention to the Aggies before they pass you by as well.

    @riddles

I agree with motorbike, only I'll go a step further. The Utes have played to 100%+ capacity (46,000) for the past 6 years and will expand as soon as they can get several of their other projects completed and paid for.

As far as your crowing about BYU's "big boy" stadium, what good is a stadium of 63,000 when 53,000 of them have all cleared out by halftime after watching their team get humiliated by their rivals from up north?

  • PAC man Anaheim, CA

    GoRed

The Utes also used to sell out the Huntsman Center; now they can barely draw 3,000 fans, despite the "official" attendance figures Utah claims.

A few more years and the shiny newness of playing in the PAC 12 will be gone.

The sad truth is, Dr. Hill doesn't want to spend millions expanding RES just to see it end up like the HC, filled with fans coming disguised as empty red chairs.

btw, you're obviously clueless about the BYU-Utah game last season. BYU actually lead 14-10 late in the first half, despite gifting Utah their first touchdown. The stadium was packed at halftime. Turnovers were the difference maker in the game; not an overwhelming disparity in football talent, as was clearly demonstrated by Utah's mediocre play the rest of the season.

Isn't that exactly what Utah fans have been doing all basketball season -- talking smack about the high-school sized gyms in the WCC?

As for all of the kids in LES, it's nice to have a family-friendly atmosphere to enjoy football, unlike RES, which has become a zoo. And yes, we do have a lot of older fans at LES. That's the natural result of having a perennially ranked team for the last 35 years, unlike that johnny-come-lately program up north.

"As for all of the kids in LES, it's nice to have a family-friendly atmosphere to enjoy football, unlike RES, which has become a zoo."

You've gotta be kidding me. I've been in that stadium, there is NOTHING family friendly about it especially if you are supporting the visiting team. (Heaven forbid they are wearing red)... Talk about a Zoo. I went to a Utah v BYU game with my brother (who is a Y fan). I had some guy threaten to shove me down the bleachers. i was sworn at AND had things thrown at me. The whole section I was sitting in was calling for my head. I wasn't even saying anything or cheering obnoxiously. I'm not saying Utah is innocent by any means. They have their fair share of jerks but puh-lease! Spare me the "family-friendly" junk. I would NEVER take my family, friends, or even a dog to another game at LES. I took that same brother to the Utah v BYU game @ RES the following year and no one treated him NEARLY as badly as the "coogers" treated me and we sat in the student section!

I think it’s hard for the cougs watching their team dwindle in significance especially as they watch those around them rise in power, credibility and significance...who cares who's stadium’s bigger, fuller, as long as you win...sounds like the cougs have lost their focus…the Ute’s are winning and the cougs are stalling; that’s a hard thing to swallow, but swallow they must…enjoy.

    Hey Pac man-

Whatever helps you feel better about the beatdown is fine with me buddy. Here's to hoping that BYU can beat a relevant opponent this year without the help of a tipped pass into the endzone (yes, im saying Utah state should have beat you last year). Cheers.

"btw, you're obviously clueless about the BYU-Utah game last season. BYU actually lead 14-10 late in the first half, despite gifting Utah their first touchdown. The stadium was packed at halftime".

First off, why are you claiming you know more about last year's rivalry game when you don't even know how many points BYU scored? You said BYU lead in the first half 14-10, BYU actually lead 10-7. The cougies never scored more than 10 points the whole game. Utah ended up destroying BYU 54-10.

"Turnovers were the difference maker in the game; not an overwhelming disparity in football talent"

Of course! The typical BYU excuse. Don't better football teams cause and capitalize on turnovers? Turnovers are part of football. No more excuses!

I wonder what they salvaged from the building. I would love to have that red UTAH in my back yard.

This new building is going to be a great addition to the football program and all around look of the campus.

Why do BYU fans always assume that anything built at the U related to sports gets some funding from state taxes meaning their taxes? This gets very tiring. How many times must it be said that the athletic department at the U is self supporting and does not get any of your precious tax dollars. Not a dime. So stop fretting about it.

    March 28, 2012 3:23 p.m.

    @ PAC MAN,

Oh, BYU led 14-10 at the end of the half, that's right. I forgot that the refs subtracted 4 points from the cougars' score for their ludicrous amount of turnovers and complete lack of effort in the second half.

54-10 will go down in history as one of, if not the single worst home loss in BYU football's history. They have a chance to redeem themselves this season, but they're going to find that a very tall task in our "cracker box sized stadium", especially considering that their quarterbacks can't seem to complete a pass...

  • Dutchman Murray, UT
    March 28, 2012 4:21 p.m.

That "cracker box sized stadium" gets home and home games every year with USC, Arizona State, etc etc and soon a home and home match up with a Big 10 team. No BCS teams want to come to the BYU "big boy" stadium unless it is under a 2 for 1 deal with BYU playing 2 games away from home in order to get 1 game at LES.

byu fans have hit new lows. Now PAC man (a byu fan) is boasting that byu lead Utah late in the first half. Congratulations. Your team was beating Utah by 3 in the first half. Too bad for you that Utah beat byu by 44 by the end of the game.

Laughing out loud at how BYU-possessed our young friends on the hill are.

An entire article about Utah's new $30 million state-of-the-art football facility, and all they want to talk about is BYU.

    btw, it sounds pretty nice.

  • JustGordon Cottonwood Heights, UT
    March 29, 2012 4:29 a.m.

Too bad the article was not more complete mentioning that the Ute's new facility was financed without state funds.

As to the other discussion of the last Big Rivalry game. Football games are played in four quarters. Who is leading at the end of any one quarter, except the last is immaterial. What is material about the last game is that Utah won by 44 points.

It is becoming increasingly obvious, that the folks down south need the Utes more than we need them. The "big game" is increasing in doubt as more attractive opponents appear on the horizon for the Utes.

Rushmore if you look back to the second comment you will see a BYU troll had started the banter. So your comment should in fact read, "Sad that BYU fans are so obsessed (rather than possessed [sic]) about the Utes." You can't come in at half time Rush and expect to play.

Since Bronco and whittingham took over BYU has won more games than utah has, including last season when BYU won more games and finished the season ranked. The more you know....

    LOL!

    @ducky

How many BCS games has Bronco taken his team to? I'm glad you are happy with last season. The cougs swept all the New Mexico and Idaho schools. That was a very impressive season indeed and unfortunately that is the pinnacle you program has been since '84. You've got to feel proud being ranked 25 in one out of 3 polls. It's kind of funny that it took so many wins to barely make a poll. I guess it had something to do with the level of talent of your opponent.

Keep beating your chest about your cougs though it's been quite amusing.

That is exactly what whittingham is doing, he's in charge of the demolition of the program.

  • Naval Vet Philadelphia, PA

    Duckhunter:

"Since Bronco and whittingham took over BYU has won more games than utah has...The more you know..."

Sorry Ducky, but Bronco only has ONE more win than Kyle, and that's only thanks to a couple of your alumni working the Replay Booth in your game vs. San Diego State. Head-to-Head, the edge goes to Whittingham. Kyle's teams ALSO plays [and beats] more relevant teams than Bronco's. Kyle as a 17-9 (0.654) record vs. schools from AQ conferences, whereas Bronco has gone only 10-10 (0.500), and if you included the 2004 Fiesta Bowl, Kyle's record is bumped up to 18-9 (0.667). Edge: Kyle.

Kyle ALSO takes the edge with his record vs. AQ schools at or above .500 by going 7-6 (8-6 if you counted the 2004 Fiesta Bowl), while Bronco has only mustered a 4-9 record. So by gloating that Bronco has a better W/L record, all your doing is patting yourself on the back for beating weak SOS, and cheating against San Diego State.

    "LOL"
