Love Rugby, but Football and Rugby are not interchangeable sports as Dick has
brought out. Football is extremely complicated and mentally tough to manage --
sort of like playing 3D chess on steroids while running for your life.I've talked to several college coaches about some outstanding athletes from
other countries and they just shake their head and say the adjustment rarely
goes well. Too much to understand about how the actions of teammates affects you
and vice versa. I hope Forrest and Lisike can make it, but, I doubt
Wow! After reading this article, I have a few suggestions for new t-shirts for
byu:"Things are not Going to go Well for us this Season""Grab a Spoon and Taste Defeat""Uh...We are
Going to Need More People"
American football is for pansies. Rugby is for real men. Is there
really someone named "Otis"?
Wow, what cool news. If anyone has seen rugby that has got to be the toughest
sport on earth. How awesome they want to play football, even if they only
become blockers. Sound like solid guys.
Good luck to them, but as was mentioned, they are not interchangable sports.
Thretton Palamo was mentioned briefly and he is a much better rugby player than
either one and has struggled with the transition. One note, Haloti Ngata was
first and foremost a football player. He was not a converted rugby player.
These new rugby players ought to fit in nicely since BYU looks and plays now
more like a rugby team with their run-first offense.
I wonder what sport Smyth was talking about. Here is his quote: Smyth says the
adjustment from ruby to football is great." Is ruby a sissified form of
Rugby or only what is left after someone gets tackled. Or is it just poor proof
reading?Otis you really need to put your real allegiance in your
name: Otis Ute Spurlock.
Cal has had players in the 2 sports for the past 30 years or so with great
success -- certainly in rugby where they have had the best team in the country
more often than not (BYU is perennial rival).Having played rugby at
BYU (30 yrs ago)I can attest that Polynesians and Maoris are some of the
toughest best athletes around.
Otis: This article is about two walk-ons...seriously. Bob Cratchet:
I wouldnt rate Thretton ahead on Paul Lasike. Paul played in the Waikato academy
program as a junior player (a feeding program for professional rugby in New
Zealand). He was the most dominant player college rugby freshman year before his
mission. I think his running style translates to football better because he is
more decisive in his cuts and more physical. Thretton is great rugby player but
he needs more space to work in. In the end, I hope all of them end up the USA
rugby program because we could use them.
This is great news for BYU's rugby team! And hopefully football too :P
This is a good example of where the football stands right now. Do you think
that any ranked program would do this.
Otis,Bronco stopped his practice of silly T-shirt/team slogans after
the humiliating 2008 season. Any silly slogans (like "Rise Up") now come
from the marketing/advertising guys. Please give it a rest.
Giving rugby players a shot is better than inviting the student body to
basketball tryouts. Speaking of irrelevant words, Otis never comments on the
"runnin'" in runnin' ute basketball.
Having played both rugby and football I can attest that American Football is NOT
for pansies. Also, in rugby, you may only toss the ball backwards. If that were
still the rule in football there wouldn't be a need for helmets, pads, etc. The
helmets and pads for football were only added after the forward pass was
allowed. This is why sports like rugby and soccer don't need safety equipment.
Now. . . if you wanna talk about Australian Rules Football. . . that
is crazy stuff!
"American football is for pansies. Rugby is for real men."I'm sorry eastcostcoug, but that's not I have heard from rugby players who
switch to football. They go in with the mindset you have, then they later admit
(those willing to humble themselves to admit it, anyway) that football is no
I wonder if Otis has seen the new T-Shirts the Ute Basketball team is coming out
with. "Oh What A Relief It Is".

eastcoastcoug,The elevator in my office building is named Otis but it
doesn't go clear to the top floor.
Unless you have size and/or speed,it'll be difficult to have much impact in
either sport. Ngata was successful in both sports, he had size and unusual
speed. In rugby the only blocker you can have is the ball carrier
sacrificing himself in taking out defenders allowing the ball safe passage to a
touchdown or his teammate. You play like that in football is suicidal.
Kamate Kamate Kora Kora I do love the Rugby game so. Fun stuff.
Coach Kys has a new t shirt slogan, borrowed from the statue of liberty:give me your tired, your pooryour huddled masses yearning to transfer to
a JCthe wretched refuse of other teams offshore,I think you get the
point. Actually, the Utes are trying out 3 woman's gymnasts for next years
basketball team. At least they have heart.
